Diamonds & Pearls album was a compromise BUT a genius commercial move! Good on him!

I think we all agree that it was a compromise depending on which way you view it..following trends yes BUT balanced with classic Prince & delivered 3 classic singles, a series of very well produced videos, a hot new look, a tonne of press & a stellar/very well recieved tour.

Coming off the back of nearly going broke through Lovesexy & Grafitti Bridge this whole project was a genius move that pushed up his commercial value considerably & showed WB & the world that when he really needed to he could have a broad appeal. If he'd delivered another Lovesexy / arty album it would have slayed his career.

I read a lot of truly ill informed comments on here in ref to D&P i.e. how dare he follow trends, it was the begining of the end, it just wasn't prince blah! There's an abject failure to appreciate that he already nearly went broke for his art through batshit crazy gambles, some bad decisons etc BUT like many successful people who run a business they have the ability to take a gamble, go to or beyond the brink BUT are so bad assed they can turn it around. I have walked in those shoes several times, gone to the brink & always turned it around.

People need to wake up, grow up & appreciate that in order to have a long successful career you need to take a gamble, make tough decisions..be a leader AND yes that means being a real shit at times to those around you AND compromise to either get back or get ahead.

^ Yup - I'm sensing a pattern.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
