I always wished Prince would've done a proper covers album when he was still alive (who knows, maybe he did and it's sat in The Vault somewhere?).

I know some people think covers albums are lazy, but they can be really cool, fun little side projects. Always loved Tori Amos's Strange Little Girls and GNR's Spaghetti Incident.

Seeing all these diverse suggestions just reinforces again how versatile and excellent a performer/musician/singer he truly was! Yes, he would have done amazing versions of all these songs, in all genres.

Seeing the threads about Chris Martin-Lianne La Havas duet, D'Angelo, etc. just remind me that most musicians, even through talented, do not have the range and ability to pull-off everything - most have one, narrow lane that they (should) stay in.

Where are the people who always suggest The Cure when this kind of thread came up (threads used to be titled like "If he's reading now, what would you ask him to cover").
"Just Like Heaven" would be interesting.

I'd like to imagine Prince doing electronica covers, either acoustic or as full-fledged tracks.

  • I wonder what Prince could have done with Krister Linder's "Shrine of Time", alone at the piano. I bet it would have torn your heart right out.
  • Anything by Depeche Mode, "Personal Jesus" would have been fab, but I'm not sure if he would find it disrespectful or appreciate it for the stab that it is against TV preachers
  • The more heartfelt songs by a-ha, like "There's never a forever thing", "Under the makeup" or "Butterfly, butterfly"
  • "Earned it" by The Weeknd.

I would have LOVED to seem him sing Joe Cocker's Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. I've been listening to this the past couple of days in light of all the sadness:

biggrin Prince would have probably done an amazing version of it with great vocals and that guitar... Imagine if they found the covers of all the Joni Mitchell's songs in that vault one day... Ah, it's good to dream cloud9
