As I said, I wasn't actually talking to you. I should have made that clearer in my original post.

I know you're being sarcastic, but you obviously don't need my permission to make comments. I'm actually interested to hear what you and others thought about the image at the time. I'm also curious to hear what you and others think about it now.

I'm the one who made the nipple licking comment in my first post and you commented on it. You were obviously referencing me.

At the time I didn't know the story behind it. Knew nothing about TBA. It was just Prince being shocking and I knew what I'd hear from others as I carried it around with me

Today, though I know what was going on, and I can understand it's meaning, it's never been an album cover I gave much of a second look. I've seen many more meaningful photos.

I was listening to this album in the car today and my friend saw the album cover for the first time ever. Her reaction, " Well Prince, don't you make a pretty lady...from a distance." I was amused smile

I was only ten but I really wanted this album. I remember being at the mall with my Mom and Aunt, and as we passed the record store they had a bunch on display. I got excited and pointed them out to my Mom. My Aunt didn't approve of the cover I guess, because she told me I could never have it because Prince didn't have clothes on. I started crying and told her I wouldn't look. lol. My Mom and I went back and got it a few days later.

Back then? I was in my 20s and clueless about a lot of things.
I didn't think the picture looked very good and was entirely unaware of Prince's beauty, or of real beauty of any kind, for that matter.

yeahthat
I found it odd and didn't buy it back then. I did later and love the music, but I'm still frustrated by the one track thing.

If anyone thinks the stamen introduces an element of smut, they're completely missing the whole point of LoveSexy, not to say nature itself.

And, no, he wasn't pointing out his nipple like a five year old: he was evoking religious imagery.

Do not ever correct me. I expressing my experience you do not agree I don't care.

Never gave it a second thought until I came onto the org and saw folks talking about it being some kind of big deal.

But then Europeans are usually more broad-minded. I don't think it was such a big thing over here compared to America.

I agree!

Although as a 14 year old boy I was a little worried about buying an LP with an almost naked man on the cover. But not more than that. My best friend and I listened to it a lot, not talking much about the cover, just the great music, and I went with my father to see him on the Lovesexy Tour, so I guess it never mattered much...

I didn't like the cover much, but it didn't stop me from buying the album. There are some good songs on Lovesexy but as a whole it is a bit too hectic/ over the top for me.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I thougt it was amazing. So ballsy and different and beautiful and perfect for the album. So 100% Prince. He just did not give a fuq. Gorgeous.

I remember my mum used to make me bring it out at her dinner parties so she could show all her boring up tight guests and they could all be shocked and giggle over how feminine he looked or whatever. I never used to care and would always proudly bring it out... Marvel people, be shocked, challenged, hate it whatever but look at him. Think about him. Talk about him.

I think my mum maybe used to do it to embarrass or upset me. It never did. I'd rather him be discussed than ignored biggrin

Fun Fact: If you hold the sleeve of the cassette version up to a light, Prince's "YES"/Heart Symbol is supermiposed perfectly over his thigh/hip from the revserse side. "It leave my name upon my thigh". It's too random not to be intentional.

My original thought was...Prince really is the king of controversy in the music biz and this album is not going to sell well at all due to the album cover

The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

I remember thinking: that´s why I love this guy so much...this is soooo daring, sexy and stylish. He did what he wanted and didn´t care. And to shut up all moralist fools who criticized the cover back then the album was fantastic! I felt so proud of being his fan...

Any Prince "fan" "shocked" by Lovesexy in 1988 obviously wasn't paying much attention to the previous ten years.

I don't remember what I said or what was to be said, but fuck was that a hard album to buy, being a guy in the 2000's. Wasn't around in 88 to get it. Actually just born.

I remember my mom bought it for me at Barnes and Noble when I was a kid. And my step dad was there. Yeah. That was awkward.

Not surprised, personally, as he always pushed the envelope-- and posing nude was the next step. My favorite album cover, personally, and none of album covers since then had been as exciting as the Lovesexy album.
