Prince's clothing and fabric I know that Prince's clothing were made specifically for him, often something he dreamed up on his own and had someone else create. I'm so enchanted by the fabrics that the clothes were made from, particularly some of his recent prints. As a seamstress and creator of clothing (alas, I also have a "day job" at this point), I would love to work with those type of items. Any ideas where to obtain such fabrics? I'm not terribly concerned I get the exact same prints, but outside spoonflower, I haven't seen much like them. Could he have had them made just for him?

I think a lot of the fabrics themselves were pretty ordinary. I mean - he wore a lot of pants that appeared to be made out of plain old stretch jersey. The stuff that was unusual and custom (as you note) was the printed fabrics - especially the long turtleneck tunics with the 20TEN imagery. I'm sure these were printed specifically for him. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Are there interviews of his clothes designers? I don't ever remember seeing one.

Prince's looks were best in the 80s, from both a design and quality standpoint. More recently, I thought his 3rdeyegirl looks (from the tour) were well done. Don't play what's there, play what's not there.

I know nothing of fabrics or making clothes but I always admired the outfits he wore. Especially in the 80's and 90's, the stuff they wore durung the Purple Rain tour and videos was bad ass.I just looked at a few cover band videos the other day and noticed the clothes the impersonator had on. The material was flimsy and didn't fit well at all. Made me think that more goes into a perfect fit.

As far as the recent shirts, etc. I'm quite sure he had a sublimation machine/printer. He or someone is his camp makes a design and enters it into the computer program and it will print on the fabric. Eventually every cloud runs out of rain.

In keeping with the theme of not matching blacks, last time I saw Prince in person, he was wearing non-matching blacks! 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

He probably knew of my aversion to mismatched blacks and did it just to tick me off. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Will The Little Girls Understand?By Bill Adler
Rolling Stone, February 19, 1981
With his taste for outlandish clothes and his "lunatic" friends, Prince says he "took a lot of heat all the time. People would say something about our clothes or the way we looked or who we were with, and we'd end up fighting. I was a very good fighter," he says with a soft, shy laugh. "I never lost. I don't know if I fight fair, but I go for it. That's what 'Uptown' is about -- we do whatever we want, and those who cannot deal with it have a problem within themselves."

Prince: Well, I used to wear leotards and Danskins and stuff, because our stage show is really athletic and I wanted something comfortable. And my management said, "You have to at least start wearing underwear, because...." Musician: You weren't wearing any underwear? Prince: No. Kind of gross. So I said, okay and started wearing underwear.
