We dog it because it sucks. I only watched it once and hated it. The whole thing screamed "washed up popstar" to me. I thought it was very embarrassing to watch, even as a hardcore fan. I would never show it to anyone if I wanted to prove Prince was a great live artist.

Of course there are some good performances as well on the DVD but overall I think it was a bad product.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Because:

1. We've all been to concerts a thousand times better.
2. Because most fans don't care to hear lyrics of our favorite tracks re-written based on religious beliefs.
3. If we want to see awesome concert footage, we'll watch SOTT or Purple Rain.
4. Way too much Larry Graham.

5. Way too much Lenny Kravitz.

6. Way, way, way too much looking like the long lost member of Kris Kross.

7. Kirk Johnson on drums.

That's just from memory -- having only watched the DVD once. I'm sure there are many other reasons, such as possible medleys.

How much better would it have been if he simply released Small Club on DVD?

That was the problem with Prince. He loved releasing stuff that promoted lesser artists -- rather than the great shows where he truly shined. With any luck, the estate will handle things much differently.

I agree with most of the reasons you list but I can NEVER have too much of Lenny Kravitz! And even though I agree with you on the DVD's faults, I do think it has quite a few positive aspects. The opening part, up to and including Morris Day and The Time, is good. I really liked the Purple House medley thing too. And The Greatest Romance Ever Sold and Baby Knows are always nice to hear.

Plus, that shiny blue costume is kind of cool in a weird 70's vision of the future kind of way.

I remember a buddy of mine (who I was supposed to go with to both nights' tapings) bragging about how he can be seen several times throughout the video. I was like, dude, that's embarrassing. This video SUCKS. You should not want to be seen encouraging Prince to be lame.

Don't tell me he was that douchy guy right up front with a fedora, a goofy grin on his face, and a drum stick beating on the barrier.

It was such a great concert. Hope you all reconsider.

Because the Septimo performance blows it out of the water. You don't even need the whole performance. Just motherless child. The contrast is crazy. I can only think the pressure of "OMG it's 1999" got to him.

I enjoyed most of the live performance. The whole of it was mighty contrived, music video-ish. It really in no way had the vibe of a real concert. However, I HATE the super-slo-mo time-lapse moments. Just one of those is way too many. I believe the same technique was used on the Santana Superstition DVD. Cringe.

Yeah, that slo-mo crap was ridiculous. The slo-mo made it impossible to show to friends.

Everyone I've showed it to really liked it. Even non fans.

Shame there's not a definitive DVD/CD compilation that really does Prince's live act justice though. I think of bands like LEd Zep, Pink Floyd, Rush and KISS who really cultivated their following by releasing very professional, stellar live shows.

With Prince we have Live in Syracuse (VHS), Sign of the Times (good but reshot and remastered), Live at the Alladin (ameturish camera work and sound with some of the best tracks ommitted), "It Aint Over" and "ONA Live" which are OK but aside from "Joy in Repetition", the aftershow disc really lacks a spark and fails to capture the magic of what made aftershows so great, "Indigo Nights" which is boring and lazy, and this.

Rave 2000 is the best of the bunch in my opinion. A nice mix of old and new tracks, really good guitar playing, Prince on percussion, "just wanna make sure that carpet work", the magic piano, a cool set with Lenny and also the Family Stone...I enjoy most of it quite a bit.

It always cracks me up whenever anyone comments on Prince's fashion, especailly Rave.

"WHAT WAS HE THINKING?!?!" My God, the dude wore a trench coat, high heels and bikini briefs in 1982. Posed naked on a Pegasus with flowing 70's hair in 1979. The Liza Minelli hair and the cloud suit in Raspberry Beret. He dressed in drag for Lovesexy and Camille and looked like a shorter, blacker Adam Ant. The assless pants and macrame yellow bananna suit on MTV in 1990. the incredibly strange hair styles, cop hat with chains and symbol costumes of the Mayte/Love Symbol album years. The full robe with the 16 inch top hat with a rose through it and a veil during Exodus. He wore a corset on the cover of Planet Earth. He wore full suits with his own album art on them like a store bought Halloween costume. His afro in his last years looked like an unkempt bird's nest with three eggs formed by the third eye sunglasses falling out of it. The all orange jumpsuit at the Grammys. High heeled sneakers.

But oh, no...oh my stars and garters, I believe I am gettin the vapors from the ALL BLUE SUIT and the corn rows. That was just too fucking much. More than my delicate sensibilities can handle. I get the feeling that some of you would go "holy shit! David Bowie SHAVED HIS EYEBROWS and WORE A DRESS as Ziggy/Alladin Sane".

What artist have some of you been following all these years?

Do you guys freak out when you watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show too? My God, the guy was a gender bending cross dressing FREAK before it was barely cool and who never seemed to wear the same thing twice. Part of the fun was seeing what the fucking guy would come up with next. The only thing he never did was do full on bald/shaved head or go total Fred Sanford and I wished he'd lived long enough for me to see it, because you KNOW he eventually would have, just to DO IT.

I watched it on April 22 or 23, at least the parts I like or some of those I like less.

Can't stand the rewritten The Cross and Purple Rain, and I hate his babushka during so-so songs like Baby Knows (plus that dance). Larry is annoying but the Sluy segment is ok, plus American Woman. Don't care for Fly Away.

But the one thing that crushed me was for the four or five splits in a row he does.

I was like "Prince, you don't have to do this!" even then. And now...

I never minded the Blue Suit, the corn rows, the moon earrings, the bouffant hair, the assless bananna chaps, the swirly sideburns, the make up, the housefly sunglasses, the third eye sunglasses, the electric heels, the granny glasses, the hoop earrings, the "Hot Thing" outfit, the black underwear, the gay Lovesexy Pirate, the Helvetica Condensed band member names down teh pants and sleeves, the cyan and yellow Symbol suit, the old man and beard outfit, the "i'm naked in a flower now", Bob George...

Fuck all that. That was ALL part of the fun for me. Dude looked different every time I saw him and it was always pleasingly weird. I fucking loved all of it even when I hated it. It was god damned hilarious and enourmously entertaining.

Only thing I never dug was the unkempt fro he ended with and the wavy haired naked look on the "Prince" album cover but it was never enough to make me wince and fan my face in disgust.

You big bunch of babies.

What? You buncha uptight so called fans never heard of Blue Balls? And as if Prince's nuts and indeed his entire body weren't visible on Dirty Mind and the Controversy poster. You buncha babies. Scared of a little genitalia. I truthfully never noticed it before, maybe cause I'm straight and was watcing him play, but now y'all are making me wanna go take a look.

Might have to bust this DVD out soon.
