Did Prince still think highly of Beyonce or not?

I have been pondering this question because I noticed back in 2004 he was blowin her up and Alicia Keys. Years later he still loved Alicia, but I didn't hear anything about Beyonce anymore especially when she started getting more adult and biting off other people's styles. One time when I was listening to podcastjuice I could've sworn I heard Antpooh say Prince said Beyonce "used to be talented" but when I google that I don't find where he says anything good or bad about her in the last 6-7 years. Prince getting with Tidal doesn't mean a thing other than more for Jay and B, but I noticed I didn't hear much steam on her end either and she used to praise Prince too. Her tribute to P of The

Beautiful Ones had mediocre sentiment to it. Hmm wonder what happened? I wonder is she one of the "fake" friends Van Jones was talkin' about.

Aside from the artistic merits of her cover:

This might sound dumb, but we're all grieving and acting like we're still in love with that ex who dumped us and was the one who got away, so nothing anybody else does can compare and is found lacking. Nobody's covers can compare; nobody sings his songs like he does, nobody moves like he does. Everything that sorta kinda sounds like him is just a pale imitation, etc.

I don't know how many musicians Prince did business with that he felt "meh" about though. Would he have given such a HUGE boost to a music service whose terms or people he didn't like? After all, super Prince fans proved they are willing to look hard and long and PAY for music and concerts and other music related things.

He at least thought of her as highly as Will.I. Am. ROFLMAO.

I am upset that Prince did anything with Beyonce given that he himself claimed to be an animal activist. Surely he out of all people should not have associated with someone who wears fur. It is hypocrytical to say the least.

I think Prince was very "diplomatic" when asked about Beyonce in recent interviews. I got the feeling he saw her as a performer and not a musician - Kinda like Vanity- except Vanity sang live. cool

I saw an interview on Dr. Drew where a guy said that during the 2004 Grammy performance that Beyonce wanted to lipsync but Prince wasn't having that and he convinced her to sing live. I'll bet he lost a lil respect for her then because after that I never saw them perform together again.

In a recent interview when Prince was asked about Beyonce he said "I ain't mad at nothing she does. She makes great records".

He didn't say talented or a great singer just that he wasn't mad at her records? wtf eek

..... Or maybe he's smart enough to know that appearing onstage with her once does not a relationship make.

Besides, if he were to try to distance himself from every single person who touched an animal product, he'd have had no band, and no one to run Paisley Park.

Geebus, this idea is a stretch. biggrin

Pretty sure he once gave her some advice about how she should learn to play an instrument.

Not sure how "she makes great records" is a dig [implying: her performance game is off?]... Then again, I'm not as subtle as Prince with the shade, blessing everyone's heart.

It's not like she can't sing, remember the whole mini-drama around the inaugural and the Super Bowl....But Beyonce to me, and a lot of other people is a better businesswoman than a performer or musician. I'm sure would have totally respected the way she set herself up to get paid from Lemonade.

I saw that quote, but I thought said that back in 2004. I didn't know it was recent. I don't know anything of recent except if you wanna count him playing "Single Ladies" on the sample set.

Well I would think so because he did choose her as one of his 10 favorite artists in this interview:

EXACTLY.

Why would you do that, give her a mentor tip ("Learn how to play an in...ng voice) and then put his ENTIRE catalog behind her major business venture?

Did Prince give major business boosts on that level to people he doesn't respect?

I was wondering too because all of her fans say that he respected her a lot and he said "she knew music"....

Why he never wrote something for her though?

From that link he was talking about his favorite artists, notice how maybe two of them were men. Most men don't look to women that way and it shows he wasn't just about muses.

Also I look at that Willow video and wonder if he felt a momentary pang imagining what his own offspring might have been like had they lived.

Beyonce is talented and she can sing. If she chooses to lipsync then I'd imagine it's for the fact that she has to dance, sort of like Michael Jackson or Janet Jackson. Just this past year, Prince gave a list of artists he liked and Beyonce was one of them and that should be the end of the debate as to whether or not Prince still thought highly of Beyonce.

The Glamorous Life has Sheila E wearing fur and of course P was in charge of all that and her image at the time. Of course maybe he changed his mind later, but he was no a hardcore animal activist. I am totally for PETA and animal rights, etc but just saying that it wasn't really hypocritical.

Artistically, I think he would've very much appreciated and enjoyed her visual "Lemonade" album. I also think he appreciated that she's a shrewd and smart businesswoman.
