Y'all naming favorites, but the question is what is the definitive instrumental? What would define Prince just by hearing music, no vocals.

I kind of concur with the "2 Nigs United 4 West Compton" track. It's historical because of the album it's on. The bass solo would give the tightest of asses a stink face for days. It's Prince proving himself. It's purposeful, aggressive, and fun.

For me, it picks up where "Life Can Be So Nice" left off. If there were to ever be an extended mix of "LCBSN", it'd have "2 Nigs" on the end of it, with chants from "Tambourine" over it.

Because that's on The Family - which is not a Prince album?

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

None of his instrumentals made much impact in the world at large, only with fans. (with the possible exception of Madhouse-6, not a great track, unfortunately) Having said that, he kept coming back to Venus de Milo in his live shows, I think if anything, this is it.

As to my favourite, it's probably Madhouse 1. The drumroll opening alone. The song has space, a great sounding drum (not heard again until The Rainbow Children) and a wicked groove.

I'd say Venus de Milo. But to me the #1 instrumental will always be "6" from the Madhouse album. I still love that darn song.

I know the B-side 'Too Sexy' is credited to Sheila E, but it's really a funky Prince instrumental
