To understand this you have to look directly at Prince. It could be from him dating reflections of himself (which Prince has talked about and obviously is recuring in his life) to many other things. He isn't a dark skinned/non mixed man trying to lighten his line...

What interviews and songs has he talked/sung about it? Has he? I know Spike Lee questioned him about it, Prince put him in his place privately. (Spike who also married a mulatta)
