Under the Cherry Moon is from the time before digital editing existed, so manufacturing a color print would basically require starting the editing process over again, unless the original print was made in color and then duplicated in black and white, which seems like it would have been counterproductive - why color correct a film you're planning to make monochromatic?

It is easy to suggest that UTCM's release in black and white robs it of the location shoot's full majesty, but the more problematic truth is that releasing it in black and white robs the film of being what it is. UTCM is a color film. Printing it in black and white doesn't change the fact that it was shot in color, that it was lit for color, and that its values are based upon color compositions.

Translating it to black and white robs the film of...well, black. And white. There are no real blacks in the final film. Everything is a sort of weird, off-kilter gray, even when it's supposed to be black. Color stock shot to be printed in color doesn't just become black and white when you print it that way. There's no question the film's look would be substantially stronger if it had been shot on B&W stock.

Making UTCM a black and white film wasn't necessarily a bad choice, but the compromise of shooting it in color first definitely weakened the released film's overall look.

Yeah, Prince is known for his severe lack of output at that time. rolleyes

.

Simple question: would you rather have a film directed by Prince or a new album?

.

He cheated us out of another album. And at that time Prince was at the top of his game. So instead of a masterpiece album, he gave us a film...a film that was, to be blunt, garbage.

.

So again I ask: rather have a garbage film or a classic album?

You act like Prince was a cog that would have produced Widget B if it hadn't been used to produce Widget A. I mean, I get it, I get it. We all get it. You don't like UTCM. But you don't have to say such stupid shit to make your case.

Fan's self-entitled stance? Yeah, right, fans of an artist should not expect them to actually put out product. And when they do, we should bow down before them and throws flowers and garlands at their feet when they deem it worthy of their time to release a record unto us unwashed masses.

.

My God, do you have a twisted view of how this works. You feel artists are Gods and we are mere peasants who should feel blesssed that they bestow a record upon us.

.

Hey, pal, we do not feel "self-entitled" simply because we buy records from recording artists.

1. Off-topic, MJ's desire to play baseball was a personal decision made during a very traumatic time in his life.

.

2. Back on topic. You do realize that P recorded 3-4 albums worth of material (of which would produce TWO killer records), toured Europe (after scrapping those plans for the Purple Rain tour) AND the states, AND filmed a movie during that 1 year period, right? lol

.

1. No, it was either A) an extremely idiotic decision, or B) something to do while being suspended for a year from the NBA due to gambling. B is the controversal view of Jordan playing baseball, but it actually is the only one that makes any sense. I don't believe A. I don't believe Jordan was that idiotic to walk away from basketball to play minor league baseball and look less than ordinary.

.

2. And just think if he didn't waste time on that crap film we all could have had another masterpiece album in our collections between "Parade" and "Sign O' The Times." Go look at your Prince collection. If you keep it in chronological order you have "Parade" and then "Sign O' The Times." Man, wouldn't you love another fantastic album in between those? Well, because of that stupid film we don't have one in between those.

If life were as simple as "A" and "B" choices, we would all be content and bored to no end lol. Both of your statements are shrouded in ridiculous opinion and rumors/lies. A one year "suspension"? For what? He never stopped gambling! lol Stop reaching.

If "Under The Cherry Moon" didn't come to be, how are you so sure that we would get "Parade" AND another album in the same year? You're not. Prince worked just as hard, if not more, before, during, and after filming than he would otherwise. Things worked out exactly how they were supposed to.

This comes up from time to time. The bottom line is that it was shot in color, but it was never edited in black and white. When you shoot a color movie with the intention of making a black and white movie, it is lit differently, so any color version (which would have to be restructured from scratch at great cost) wouldn't look right without massive amounts of color correction. That is all possible to do, but the movie tanked, so they won't be spending any more money on it, recreating something that was never intended.

Every version of the movie was edited using black and white footage.

It would be fun if it existed, but from what every insider on the movie has explained to me, it doesn't exist.

It's cute you've tried to tell me how I feel and what my views are, but you could not be more wrong. I don't think artists are Gods, and if you knew me you'd know I'm no kind of ass-kisser, or turn a blind eye in my purple tinted shades. But - you're sticking to your story. Enjoy.

Truth be told, since it was shot on color stock that was then printed to black and white, it always looked like a muddy black and white to my eyes (no matter how they tried to up the contrast with lighting). I remember wondering why some of the scenes seemed so vague in contrast and tone. I bet the color footage looks great!

I've been saying this for years!!! before I die I want to see this in color. I know Iknow it was meant to be in BW but I think color would be fascinating and different. either the studios should release it or an experienced fan should convert it to color and share it with the rest of us.

You could watch the color-print film, but it'd be like painting a turd with bright colors.

My guess is you are no fun at parties.

There's an Easter Egg in the DVD menu that allows you to switch to the color version.

Even better is the commentary track with Steve Fargnoli, Robert Cavallo and Joseph Ruffalo. They spend almost the entire commentary ranting about how much money they lost by producing the film.

I don't see the point in bickering over this -- not everyone loved this movie, we get it, but why not leave others to love it because they do? Why do you need so badly to beat people down for liking something you think is trash? Here's a thought: bow out of the convo and do something else with your time.

Personally, I thought the movie was fun to watch -- I don't expect someone who is a musician first to be a great screenplay writer, since they're different disciplines.

It comes down to me asking you that infamous question: "Yeah? What are YOU doing?"

So people who have to insist on hating this movie? Let me see YOU write a great movie. And sell it. Go ahead, I'll wait.

I really liked UTCM in black and white. I think it adds to its charm. But I also like seeing the stills that have been posted in color. For example, I had NO CLUE that his robe was fuschia. So I think there are benefits to both. I love this movie so much! It's so funny!

I own a copy of the B&W (obvs) but would by a re-release in a heartbeat if it also included colour version and perhaps some outtakes because there HAS to be some, and I suspect they're hilarious!

I would love to see in color. I love it in black and white as well, and understand why he made it that way. It made it unique. Just watched it last night again. Hadn't seen in it several years, yet I have had the DVD for years. My husband and I always loved this movie! It shows Prince's silly side. Love him and Jerome together. So many funny scenes and quotable lines from this movie! cool lol

I think it would have been more visually interesting in color based on teh stills I've seen.

Like others have pointed out, shooting in color and then converting it to black and white doesn't really work or add anything. Look at the Coen Brothers, Hitchcock, Wells, Lynch and films like Sin City or Schindler's List to see the difference this makes. In B&W film making, lighting and contrast are everything. Actors wear colors, make up is applied and sets are designed with this specifically in mind.

As it is, the B&W in UTCM is just a gimmick for a rather mediocre film. Artsyness for the sake of it, like the single track gimmick on Lovesexy.

I love UTCM in black & white, and would rather not see it in color, not because I don't think it would be beautiful but because I can imagine and see what it looks like in my head. And Cloreen, Prince did what he wanted, and if he wanted to reflect the timelessness of the black and white film, then he had every right to do so, as he was the director in the end, and it was not an idiotic decision that he made to do it this way, and this is what I absolutely loved that about him, so just get over it, because it was his decision to make as the director.
