Prince's "Gett Off" and the 24-Year Mystery of an Iconic Hip-Hop Sample

I just read this article in Newsweek today which discusses the origins of the scream from House of Pain's "Jump Around." The prevailing theory has been that the scream comes from "Gett Off." However, DJ Funktual (James Freund), a YouTube personality who has long posted videos about hip-hop samples, makes a great case that the scream is actually from Junior Walker's "Shoot Your Shot."

I have to say it is compelling, although I do believe the DJ Bizznizz remix of "Jump Around" definitely has the "Gett Off" scream in it. What do you guys think?

Interesting! My dad played with Junior for many years - he's out of the country right now by I'll run this by him when he gets back!

My 2 cents: Harlem Shuffle + Gett Off -> Jump Around; Shoot Your Shot -> Ain't Sayin' Nothin'.

I always thought it was the Gett Off scream that was sampled in that song.

In my heart, I know you're somewhere laughing in the purple rain...

Yup. smile DJ Funktual discusses Divine Styler as being the first one to use the sample. Then, he slows it down and shows how it, along with "Popeye" by Chubby Checker, was allegedly used in "Jump Around."

Cool!

It sounds like not a human being though in Jump Around...

Someone said it sounds like an overblown bagpipe in A. It is an Irish group so....

It's cool to know Prince screamed in tune though. That's amazing! I thought screams were just that.

And that Doesn't sound like rosie to me
No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ prince. He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take prince away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >

Gotta to say that I always thought it was Gett Off. But after hearing Shoot Your Shot for the first time just now, it's clearly that.

Ok... so after thinking about this for a day - I was listening to "Gett Off" through headphones today...

And right after Prince screams there is a really faint sound (it gets repeated) that sounds *just* like the sax from "Shoot Your Shot"- I mean, I know it's not because Prince was pretty emphatic about not sampling. But could Prince's scream and the following sax sounds be heavily derivative of the sax on "Shoot Your Shot?" I've never heard Prince credit Junior with having been an inspiration. The mystery continues...

Just heard from my dad (who played with Junior Walker for a long time) - he's in Costa Rica and doesn't have great service so he couldn't watch all the videos, but he thinks it IS Prince at the beginning. He said that Junior's sax screech didn't really sound like the one in Jump Around... HOWEVER - I'm guessing he's used to hearing it live and not recorded and sampled...

So, even though my dad knows Junior's music like the back of his hand, I STILL think it's Junior at the beginning and not Prince, lol!

Can't find the corresponding thread, but Michael B and Rosie herself both confirmed years ago that Rosie is indeed the owner of the scream at the beginning of Gett Off.

The original version of Jump Around is not Prince. However, that remix is Prince. I know that scream anywhere.

The official remix is the Pete Rock one which has no such noise in it. That DJ Bizznizz one is unofficial.

I did the mixes for that DJ Funktual video -- We really did ... "do the work" on this one ... It's NOT Prince. It DEFINITIVELY is not Prince. I can't say it enough. The proof is right there.

Keep your headphones on.
