BET is a tribute enough?

They're going to do a tribute, it's going to be better than the billboard event where Madonna dressed like a shiny Jack Sparrow and tried to stake her claim on "Nothing Compares 2 U".

Is a tribute enough? Shouldn't they introduce a new award? The Prince symbol could easily be turned into a physical award?

It could be restricted to once every 3 years (to make it mean something). It could be an icon award, it could be best new artist with sales less then 1 million (to centre the eyes of the world on that person)... Just a thought.

Are you going to tune in every year to see if the likes of Trey Songz or Drake wins the prince award? Hell no. All that would happen in that case is someone saying that the award winners don't deserve having their name mentioned in the same breath as Prince. And that's not just on the ORG.

I can't wait until 6/26 to see everyone's disappointment in BET and those involved. 100 posts on how it could have been done better if so and so had been asked. Why wasn't so and so there? Wow, so and so butchered Purple Rain! Wow, I was so wrong about BET doing better than what Madonna and Stevie Wonder did! I should have known better! There's only one Prince! Petitions started to get the resignation of everyone involved. That would be a fun thread. Predictions on everyone going batshit crazy over the BET awards.

Oh... wait.

--- Why did I know this was you before I scrolled up. Do you have something against BET or black people. Nothing BET could do would be worst then that Billboard shit.

Yeah, it's a racial thing lol rolleyes.

Has nothing to do with the miserable lack of talent (compared to Prince) that we've seen in the industry since music became mostly a visual medium.

Like I said, I can't wait. It's going to be a disaster. And the kind you can watch unfold with glee -- without feeling guilty over later. Only 24 days to go!

No, it's not racial. It's about finding something negative to moan about in almost every single thread.

Sigh.. How sad really.

I think it's a great idea, Laura, and one criteria for nomination could be real music. There are many out there. None that come close to Prince obviously, but it would encourage more to pick up an instrument (or several) and actually learn the trade.

I interested to see Madonna Ciccone's response to the BET tribute. I caught that she's not liked them much recently with certain statements.. "I'm wearing a jacket that Prince gave me without permission from BET.", and "Love knows no color", and "I will (shade) you!".

Should be entertaining for a day.

Funny, but probably a virtual certainty.

The way to combat that is to name it a Prince humanitarian/philanthropic award. That could certainly be a win, win. The humanitarian/philanthropic exploits that are showcased always are heartfelt and shine a light on community/world issues. Certainly now that Prince's humanitarian/philanthropic exploits have been spotlighted, his name would make for a great annual award related to those endeavors.

No. Of course I wont, that's not really the point though.

Note: My thought was that this wouldn't be a yearly award. It'd be every 3 years, partly in homage to Prince's apparent love of the asymmetrical, and partly to ensure it doesn't just get handed out to the latest #trending "Artist"

OK... sort of off topic.

Ever listen to The Music Snobs? I've learned about so many awesome artists from those guys. Artists who will never get the recognition they deserve. Hence my suggestion that it could be limited to artists who have sold less than million units - right there you eliminate the Drakes & the Trey Songs... they sell to many units. Kind of like a way to shine the purple spotlight on an artist you wouldn't expect to win an award.

--- Not all RnB artist are miserable and with the exception of Trey Sonzs the 2010 was decent and no where near as bad as Billboard.

I think that is a BEAUTIFUL idea Noodled24 smile . But to be honest, I don't think it would do much good. P didn't care for awards much anyway. So many people are awarded for their popularity rather than actual talent these days. It would make me puke in my mouth to think that Fetty Whoop Whoop or whatever his name is was getting the "Prince Lifetime Achievment Award"...gross feeling ill feeling ill

Prince stood for artists who were no longer seen as "relevant" anymore. He really fought for us young musicians to own what we have, create our own works, and be our own selves outside of the industry. I don't think it would look very good to give artists that aren't doing that an award with his name on it. These days, the most relevant and creative artists are the ones NOT getting awards. I think you're on to something though. It would be nice if they had something that would honor P every year fro heart

Lol....people like to bring up race here a lot. Have you noticed? Funny thing is that most of my black friends can't stand BET. I would love a primetime network special where many diverse artists are invited to pay tribute. (Outkast, Ween, Phish, D'Angelo, Foo Fighters, Tower of Power, Santana, etc.) That would be epic. BET just focuses on R&B or hip-hop. And that was only about 1/10 of what Prince was about. Them throwing shade at Madonna is pretty pathetic and and just a sad attempt to get ratings. Bring on Trey Songz.....lol.

Will pay no attention to a BET tribute - I am no Madonna fan but whoever does any type of tribute should be respected.

From here on out after all the flack Madonna received before even stepping out on stage many will not even bother after seeing that.

Lets just say someone in the Country music World was influenced by Prince and wanted to tribute- with all the snarky comments and shade just like you couldn't resist....Why Bother....and that shade BET threw right after they deserve to have Satellite problems and it does not get broadcast- that would be Highly Hilarious and well deserving.

Its not a racial thing , It's just Madonna was being Madonna and made it about herself. Stephen Hill, if he knows better he would pick artist that prince collaborated with or at least dug.
