Pop Matters article: Best eulogy I've read so far - from a woman's point of view

This is just...delicious...

Water Baby: A Eulogy for Our Departed Prince

by Jane Clare Jones

1 June 2016

Prince Rogers Nelson was never one to let anyone wrap him up in a pussycat bow. Pop-star. Rock-god. Funk-master. Preacher. Satyr. Dandy. Workhorse. Gender-bender. Monk. Magician. Philanthropist. Joker. Svengali. Recluse. Showman extraordinaire. He was a man of luminous, full-throated joy, and deep, shattering longing. Of indestructible groove laced with an abyssal ache that he was certain (and he was right) could be made to take flight through the transcendent, propulsive power of music. He played guitar like he was making love and talking in tongues. He sang like an angel and a man possessed. He was reverence and sin. Confusion and commitment. Artifice and naked emotional exposure. He hated being stared at but wanted everyone to look at him. And when we looked, we were as awed as he wanted and needed us to be, and we offered up the love that he asked for and that he made, and for a long time it was enough, it was everything, and at the same time it was not and could never be enough.

Read the whole thing - it's worth it. (And make sure you have tissues at the ready. I thought I was done crying, but...yeah...no.)

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I'm nearly done reading but had to stop and thank you for sharing, Genesia.

Hats off to the author. So many great observations... I was worried for a second when she mentioned Toure (don't get me started on him lol ) and the 2014 panel for his book (btw I also cringed at that moment when the panelists basically ignored Danyel Smith's story, which gave me chills!)...

Anyways, THANK YOU. Just what I've been needing... Going to finish reading now... heart

I'm glad I decided to click on the thread and follow up by clicking on the link. I'm getting tired of reading things that seem, well... let's not worry about what so many things seem. This was worth it.

Thank you for pointing it out.

Loved the interweaving of the apparent opposites in which Prince somehow managed to encompass and transcend both, leading a new way forward.

I commented over at Pop Matters that I posted Ms. Jones' piece here - and received this lovely reply from her:

I'm so grateful for you doing that. I've been lurking over there a fair bit the last weeks, but haven't signed up - I'm one of those people who uses their voice for a living who's somewhat uncomfortable about talking to people she doesn't know smile I had a look at the post - if you get this, can you pass on my very purple best to everyone over there smile
