Prince Performing for Nearly 40 years

So I had a conversation with my best friend of almost 30 years wink about Prince's death Friday night. She said something that kinda touched me. She brought up the fact that one's death and how it happens is already written or determined eek I know were born to die, but I dont know if I believe that eek I was telling her that since Prince had been performing since what the age of 17 or 18 that his 57 mustve felt like 87 sad He did so much more than the average performer on stage and his body just couldnt take anymore...that saddens me so much sad She agreed and said he lived a hard life performer wise. So what do u think? U think his body just couldnt do it anymore?

YES.

People often forget that the act of playinng all the instruments is physically demanding as well as the singing/dancing

He'd been playing instruments since when...like age 3? Think about that for all the small muscles and joints of the fingers shoulders elbows upperback neck etc...

Aww...I know it makes me wanna cry, but I know he loved his work and enjoyed performing. His poor hands and legs mustve been so painful...sad. He used his hands more than anything.

I spent so much time watching clips on youtube etc. my mind has been occupied with him like never before since his death. I feel he has done it all. I think he came to a closure. The last tour indicates that and prior to that the tours with his hits. Maybe he had the closure and with some people with that kind of back history they can't live longer if the only thing that they believed in, comes to an end. I still don't think he had an illness though.

I also noticed that he was in touch with the fans, so why was everyone saying he hated the fans? He was monitoring the fans all the time.

Prince I will always miss and love U.

Yes, music wise he came to a closure. We all know we would have seen him even if he was sitting in a wheelchair and just playing an instrument, but it is not what he wanted to portray. This would have been unlike him. Anyway, I am getting nuts again as I miss him so much agian. confused

So u think that he made peace with his past and whatever he was going through and so he lost his will to continue? I guess its like a regular person who works for years, retires then passes away sad Prince had a love/hate relationship with us. I do believe that at one point he hated the things his fans did...hell he sued his fans, but I think as he got older, health deteriorated that he put it all into perspective. We're his fans and he had a big part in how alot of our experiences as children played out.

I'm a trainer and have worked pretty extensively with musicans - counterbalancing musculature to help balance out their muscle use - one of my clients had a hump on his back from piano playing - that took me 3 years to fix and get him standing upright.

Its no joke the physical toll just practice can have on the body - and thats before they ever hit the stage.

I can see how Prince could be in pain - very easily...I know from my work that making something look so effortless requires an intense physical discipline.

There's never any pain onstage - you enter an altered reality, a reflexive meditative state that enable you to perform at a high level - the pain comes later. Kind of like a fighter after a match.

But Prince and just anbout any performer will do whatever it takes to make sure that show goes off without a hitch.

Prince would never want anyone to know or think about how much effort it took, because he trained himself to make it look effortless because thats part of the magic smile

I do think he packed 80 years of motion into 57 years of life.

Yes Nursev I think he made peace with his past. 57 is not very old but with such a back history and his own human life experience it's very old. Maybe musically he had his closure. I don't know how this kinda things works mentally, but maybe he couldn't see himself getting old and retired.

Prince I will always miss and love U.

Kevin Smith in his tribute said it feels wrong we watched his entire career. It bothered me, because we really did (his older fans) Anyone born before his career took off will feel it. Been looking at a lot of pics of him seemingly jumping from seemingly impossible heights for a man in heels, doing splits and thinking of him hurting himself in the long run. How can something so awesome now seem so sad?

Then i saw that pic of Prince on stage with that little girl and thought about her, probably having the time of her little life, wondering what the fuss was about this man. She's a little older now and I was wondering how she feels about his death, probably consoling her Mother and Father. I guess it cuts so many people across the board.

sigh

Talk to anyone who has toured extensively on a regular basis for decades. I'm not talking about bands like the Rolliing Stones who go on tour after long breaks, but about people who perform regularly or tour without long breaks for decades.

You'll find singers-guitarists with neck and shoulder problems, bassists and guitarists with the same issues plus wrists problems -- and those guys don't dance or anything, they just stand and perform. Even Rick James had an issue caused by throwing his head back repetitively to the beat, I think it was described as rock star whiplash? I'm not even going to get into what happens with longtime drummers.

Not only did Prince did all of this combined, but he danced his ass off, did the splits and jumped from risers. He first did so in platform shoes when he was very young, then in heels. Go ahead, put on some heavy platform shoes and jump from an height of four or five feet. On second thought don't do it and take my word for it : landing, you feel your ankles and all the bones in your feet take a violent blow. Once won't kill you, but repetitively, you might as well have someone beat your feet with a wooden stick, it's less damaging.

So yes, Prince really abused his body punishingly to entertain. No wonder he was in pain if those guys simply holding guitars throwing their head back to the beat eventually develop musculo-skeletal issues.

You know when Prince was performing like that in the 80's and 90's we all loved it and it never crossed my mind that he was physically hurting himself just trying to make his fans happy and yes I know he also did it cuz he loved it, but honestly if it meant that he would live to see 80 I wouldve preferred to just have him sit and play the instruments, but I know that the way he lived his life was already planned for him to do that.

Sadly I think he did not. He even did not realise he needed a break. So much cover up. He had the PP Party just to prove everyone he was ok while he knew he was not. He took all the medication to prove he was ok. This is what saddens me the most. He needed to be helped but instead everyone was celebrating his output while the man needed some serious help. REally sad.

Prince I will always miss and love U.

eek Its so true and to think how many times he did all that eek Im surprised he never broke a limb or something with the impact of jumping like that.

It breaks my heart to think how much of his body, mind, heart and soul he put into his work only to see so many mean and thoughtless things said about him at times from people who were never satisfied.

Thank you for reminding people what it is like to work as a musician. He gave his all and I hope that he knew most people did appreciate him.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Wow...such a detailed description. Thank u for this it makes an outsider looking in see how much the body of performers go through. Didnt something happen to Sheila E's legs too?

I dont know of Sheilas issues specifically...I would bet Sheila has lots of issues because she did what the male drummers did IN HEELS. Also especially in the hands wrists elbows shoulders - women have less muscle there just because so they have to work harder to get the same depth of sound & power - which requires more impact - without proper physical maintenance & supporting nutrition there can be stress fractures in the small bones over time.

Think of it this way - the body ends up in the shape of what you do MOST. That is true for just about anyone. Musicans will overuse muscles and underuse others that eventually show up in a nagging pain, or tightness...eventually the body adapts until it can't - then injury.

I know her wearing heels also affected her too...so the Nutrition thing has to also be a big thing with Prince's death. He was a small guy and I dont know if the stories about his diet are true, but he hardly ate or slept. Recipe for disaster.

He gave EVERYTHING. I really believe that. EVERYTHING.

All his love, time, energy, passion, emotions and spirit. He used himself up, and I believe he didnt even realize he was pushing his luck. He was that singleminded in his mission 24/7/365 - then poof. gone. sad

YES. Nutrition puts back what effort takes out. I can guarantee he wasnt eating enough. I dont think he EVER did though but youth lets you skate. Until it doesnt.
