I'm glad to see that there are other orgers into St. Vincent I thought I was the only one. P had such a diverse style with his music, style, fashion, looks, films..(yes, films)..His songs were played not only on the r&b stations but alternative rock and jazz stations too. And he made the magazine covers of all the different music and instrument publications. I've never seen any other artist do that. He was one of a kind.

As everyone has said, none.

His sheer volume of output over the years has left us with a lifetime of music so there really is no need to pass the baton.

May I respectfully add, in Prince's own words, "Shut up already, damn!"? Let's move on.

Music Died on April 21st 2016.
Unless you're into mainstream media and record company driven "artists", that can barely play one instrument (if any), rarely write their own lyrics (if ever), and can't stand out and be themselves... then you're gonna bleed profusely like the rest of us.

No one. And no one has to. He left us gold and we'll be enjoying those fruits of his hard work forever. Or at least as long as we're around. My dear Prince, so many songs of treasure he created. I would gladly exchange many of them if he had slept more and lived longer.

YOU have to replace Prince with yourself. Be great.

>>>

Create inspiration in yourself. Let Prince's music be alive in your soul. Share your beautiful soul - as much as you can.

^^^

Pick up the pieces - there are so many. Example: Mononeon. Check him out - one of the last bass players to jam with Prince. He has a youtube channel - CHECK IT OUT. It's great. It makes you realize that Prince was insanely contemporary and cutting edge to his last breath. Keep that spirit strong by being amazing yourself.

<<<

Watch a Mononeon video - and check out his manifesto at the end. Its the shit. Maybe you'll feel better.

Hello. How r u? I'm fine. Cuz I know that the Lord is coming soon. Coming, coming soon.

Could never be again. The times are too different to create another Prince. the 80s was the last of an era that could 1. Create those levels of Superstars 2. People with unique artistic expression
Sadly it is over in that sense.
Lot's of good music, and (non mainstream) musical genres still though

To quote Prince... "I am music". That's basically what I meant by my statement.
His creations will live on for ages.

more or less true but when someone has something that makes crowds go berserk, everything else follows, with or without the industry.

Wow, even though it sparked some strong opinions, I'm SUPER happy to see both St Vincent and D'Angelo EVEN MENTIONED in this conversation.

I agree with most that Prince is irreplaceable. (Cmon, there's never gonna be another Prince!!!)

BUUUT...

StV and D' fill some void with me that P left.

Together, they're two sides of a "Prince coin" for me. Collectively they cover the avant garde Rock/folk shit and hard funk/soul (and D's music is informed by quality hiphop--something P never mastered. Annie too kinda...can't wait to see if her recent collab with Sounwave leads to somethin!). They challenge my tastes. They absolutely kill it live. Their unique mastery on their respective instruments is unparalleled.

No, they don't have a "when doves cry" or "purple rain"--i.e. an undisputed smash hit that defines an era. (Honestly, I don't think either are even aiming for that) But my enjoyment of Prince's music never really depended on his popularity. I liked his deeper, experimental cuts. And his range. And overall how he forged his own sound.

Am getting into Esperanza Spalding. Seeing her tomorrow night at the Melbourne Int. Jazz Fest.

Jose James is also playing. And Robert Blasco and his trio. Both really good.

Here is a clip of Esperanza, bought a ticket to her show as soon as I heard one song:-

P.S. Agree that Prince was likely once in a lifetime and that no artist could ever really compete even if they were as brilliant (very hard, though).

However, missing him has inspired me to not take musicians for granted. And to go out searching for them more, lest they pass by me and I miss out.

...also, I think that, whilst touched, he wouldn't want people to be slouches as far as being open to new musicians. There are still plenty of brilliant musicians around ...not mainstream generally, it's true. And I think that Prince was all about the new, never really the old. So I'm going to be inspired by that and keep moving with the new. ...and playing his cds innmy car. Erotic City never gets old!

Just saw Esperanza Spalding perform here in Melbourne and it was excellent!! biggrin

Was half a meter from the stage.

Worth noting that on Prince's twitter he had apparently picked her new album as his Purple Pick of the week!

No one.

And we shouldn't even try. He was a human being, unique and inimitable. He was more than genius and talent. He was a person - and people can't be replaced. Can someone replace your grandma or your dad? They can't.

We lost a genius and a brother of the human family on 4/21. We will never replace that.

John Grant does it for me... He's an amazing artist in his own right and I'm not a fan of comparing artists but he does make each album different in much the way Prince often would...
