What an amazing tribute by Sheila (and Mayte, Jerome, Liv, Elisa, Shelby, Twinz, Morris Hayes, and more...)

Absolutely amazing.

Yes just LOVED them all especially Sheila ... The no shoes hits home, as if no one can fill his shoes. bawl

When I saw it last night, it never occurred to me this was the meaning. In hindsight, the gesture makes absolute, fitting sense. No one can fill his shoes in our lifetime.

Am I the only one that thought it overall sucked?? Erykah Badu was off key most of TBODP, Bilal did NOT do The Beautiful Ones justice (sounded weak, thin and strained), J.Hud and crew...... ummmm, just no, Janelle Monet was trying too hard (as usual), Maxwell sounded good but really should have just stuck to the script..... The only thing even close to being redeeming was Sheila's set. She had the energy, the history.... but the rest? Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

By those standards, you might as well expect God to part the heavens above and beam Prince down himself.

It was a tribute by many artists not a Prince concert. Whenever several acts get together on a stage or a record to perform Prince songs, it's going to be pure homage, not an attempt to compare to the incomparable.

Oh, boy, here we go ... Did anyone else think Prince's recent appearance from the natural hair (Afro-style) to the tunics and chains had him resembling African-American men of the 70s? It was as if he wanted to leave the image he had cultivated behind in favor of what he was comfortable with in the 70s as he started his career. But then there were the complaints that his women were usually light-skinned - where were the darker-skinned women in his life? I am white, and I never thought of him as a black artist. In fact, I never thought of him in terms of color. He always said he was "old school," loving the James Brown School of Entertainment. Or, as in a quip about Madonna (paraphrasing) that he could sing and dance at the same time. But his color never entered into it for me.

Actually I thought he was pulling from a lot of Middle Eastern-North African Berber looks.

But the other side of his outfits had a more futuristic Mad Max look, from the Welcome 2 tours -3rd Eye Girl - Piano shows

Old School, he also loved Joni Mitchell and I think her influence had more wide affect on Prince's music than James Brown

There was definitely something multi-racial about him. I think his wide accross the board popularity stemmed from the fact that he had such a cultural, physical and spiritual diversity within him, it was impossible to categorise him, which conversely enabled everyone to identify with him.

I like to think that he was the archetype of the "universal" man.

I think Tolly Wright dozed off or turned in before the show was over. She missed the highlight of the show! Is it possibel she's anti-Sheila E.? I don't know her and I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt but that's piss-poor "journalism" that shouldn't have seen the light of day.

Coming back to this a day later and I realize a big part of why Sheila's tribute touched me so much, besides the great energy and execution, was it was full of those little hidden details we all loved about Prince - clues, cues and perfect little notes. Things that might have been a nod to other things, or maybe not. Specifically I'm thinking about:

*Was that Prince's voice introducing Sheila?

*At the end, when Sheila, Mayte and Jerome are holding the purple cloud up to the heavens, Mayte has her arm wrapped around Sheila's waise. Not unlike the famous Wendy and Lisa pose.

*Song choices. Some were obvious, but why America (which I loved), for example?

*Sheila and the whole crew dancing in bare feet. Was it a nod to his hip pain or (I hope) what someone else said, which is nobody can fill Prince's shoes?

*No attempt to copy a guitar solo.

There must be more?

Perfectly stated CherryMoon57, he can't be compartmentalized, he wasn't racial in anything he did and for people to be arguing over him and what he was or wasn't is unfair to his memory and the way he lived his life.

admission is easy, just say U believe, then come 2 this place in your heart.

Maybe that will be in an even better tribute or special showcase yet to come...

I agree with another poster a special show would have been nice...exclusive....Maybe a bigger show to exhibit all of his bands....and pay tribute to him.

Just finished watching some of the tributes(I'm in the UK so not seen the full show yet)...Maxwell...66 days did it...here come the tears. Janelle was cute, the outfit, the track choices, the emotion, more tears. Jennifer Hudson...hmm Purple Rain, no, nope, not right, its not Prince so it shouldn't be anyone.

And then and then..... Sheila...and the tears, bawling like a baby-again.

After seeing the Prince tribute concert on Saturday with Morris and the Time etc I thought I was doing better, well was I wrong. But somehow this funky, awesome, fantastic choice of tracks, musicians and those that knew Prince, all coming together to play tribute to him, blew the roof off of this thing. A truly bittersweet moment in time of love, tears, sadness, joy, reminiscing, laughter and just plain Prince ness gave balm to my battered heart and spirit sorely grieving the loss of Him.

Sheila almost, it seemed to me, channelled Prince, in spirit, attitude(I mean THAT slide....) energy and took it to another level. That can only be done by those that really know and love someone.

I squeed like a fangirl when I saw Mayte, then Jerome and cried when Sheila and him danced.

At the end, when Sheila and Mayte lifted the cloud into the air like an offering to Prince or to give thanks for Prince, it was moving, beautiful, sad but somehow so, so fitting and yes I bawled once more.

I finally felt like somebody got it, like what we had been feeling was real. Like those that are grieving his loss, had finally been acknowledged. That the momentous loss of Prince was truly being recognised.

Sheila put together an amazing tribute, fitting, honouring a friend and allowing us to do so with her.

As for the tour..oh yeah I'll be there cool

Obviously he didn't stop 2 think about it except in passing. And no one is saying it's the be all & end all...least of all Prince...but it's definitely a factor 4 a black man born in America in '58. Not 2 mention his father was born in Louisiana in 1916...

Okay, I'm gonna say this.. perhaps it'll help make it clear how racist all that talk about Prince being black and white fans not getting it comes across.

Imagine I went on a Bowie forum and said the same things about him being white, identifying himself as white, being one of us as opposed to coloured fans etc etc. Now can you hear it?

Whatever Prince was, he was definitely not racist. Especially not against his own fans.

It was beautiful in every way. After almost a day now to digest it the only things I'm still missing slightly are representation from the Revolution and 3rdeyegirl. I also think it would be epic for these tributes to include the man himself such as a montage of past performances, interviews, music videos all done according to his life's timeline. That would really feel complete somehow.

It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

It would help if people would stop saying he "transcended his race".

Nobody ever says that about Bowie just because he has fans of all races. It is never questioned.

That is the difference. Now can you hear it?
