I think that because now he had passed he feels part of you rather than something you can just watch and admire. Not comparing him to Christ but it's the same principle.
Furthermore we can individually take the parts that resonate without any deabate about prince himself getting in the way.

Since he passed away, I'm no longer afraid to die and miss out on watching him perform live (as selfish as that may sound).

I kind of understand what you are saying - this selfish thought flashed through my head too - but of course I rather he be here - it is just how the brain processes stuff I think.
