It's interesting the spilt in opinion between Phase 1 and 2

I've listened to Phase 2 far more and it feels more like classic Prince to me.

Phase 1 sounds like an attempt to produce a more commercially successful album, which is fine, but it's not the style of music I like... Chart dance, Rihanna, Beyonce type stuff. Not my thing.

Like a Mack is pretty good though! smile

yeah its an interesting split.

There are obviously some really good tracks on Phase 2 and of course xtralovable is gr8 track from years ago - but I find Phase 1 more interesting and I listen to it far more.

Phase 1 - imo seems to flow well and trks 5 to 11 feel chilled out to me music . Im not into chart dance, rihanna, beyonce type stuff either and most of Ph1 does not sound like that to me - tho mayb some trks at the start are a bit like that 4example millon dollar show - but i still like the celebratory way that track sounds - ultimately sounds like a good Prince trk 2 me.

God Bless Prince

Most of prince's music has always been complicated but that's what makes him a genius. I always have to listen to Prince's songs several times b4 i can actually hear it.

I was listening to Like a Mack at work the other day and there was definitely some awkward head bobbing.

yaaassssssssss!

yes headbang

i said the whole time it was a compromise for the chirren of today - Princes marginal is way better than current pops best. Even with the 2003ish production smile

Wow, the org is backtracking on these albums. Don't remember a lot of love a few months ago. Amazing what a death does. lol

I've had Phase 2 a while but only listened to it today and it's a very solid album, great songs, vocals, musicianship. I don't think any are "skip" tracks - can enjoy all the way through. That hasn't been the case for me with many of his albums.
He finished strong! (Though it still pains me to say "he's finished" - he really had so much talent...).

Phase 1 I liked from the very beginning. Phase 2 took me a while to really appreciate.

Change it one more time..

Guilty as charged. But I don't consider it backtracking. It's a reassessment.

That being said, even though Prince's death has prompted me to enjoy Phase One much more, I still acknowledge that there are many goofy and terrible elements to this album. It's like this: I'm a huge Bond fan and I enjoy watching Moonraker even though for the most part it's a fucking mess. Phase One is the Moonraker of Prince albums. And being such, it has its charms if you want them.

I have loved Phase 1 since day one. I was on vaca when it came out and missed all the comments before hearing it. I remember coming on here afterwards and was shocked people hated it. Very solid little album. I like this version of This Could Be Us more than the one on AOA.

AOA is my fave album from the 2000's from him. Very cool and original. I hear new things every time I listen to it, something that has been missing in later albums. As said a few times on other posts, I can't listen to Way Back Home. I listened to it soon after hearing of his passing and was weeping. Tore me up...not ready to hear it again since.

Phase 2 is very good but more of a collection of songs. I had many of them already. All sound good and Black Muse is amazing...but of these three its the one I am listening to the least.
