Prince Tried to Tape a PFunk Show in LA (Bootsy Recalls) Remember the "Prince fam" syndrome over bootlegs that was on NPGMC & spilled over on Prince.org? Some of you do, getting preached at for having live unreleased material. Here is where you get vindicated. Remember all the people pretending not to have any bootlegs? That shit WAS CLASSIC. Oh no, you are pure. Mmm hmm. Bootsy recalls Prince being dragged away for trying to TAPE record a P-Funk Bootsy show. This is a perfect example of what we always knew. Prince was just like US, he wanted his own tapes for a keepsake (& most likely to study) because he loved Boootsy Baby. It turns out Prince was jonesing for live tapes as well of his favorite artists. Scan to 5:00:

"Well, I dont think he had to admit it. He would come to the show, like this one show we did called the Funkfest in LA. He ran on stage like he was Prince, my boardguard threw him in the audience. Sure enough he had his tape recorder & he was taping music"
Ladies n Gentlemen, I doubt this was the first time Prince held up his recorder on the stage. RIP Prince, we will try to get you some p-funk live tapes air mailed. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to tape Funkfest directly on stage with a tape recorder, electric words- fan bootlegs but I'm here to tell you there's another way: soundboards"

That's very funny.
But I always felt that he didn't really have a problem with his shows being taped, but more so with the recordings being sold on. I'm sure at one of the concerts I was at P told the audience to record the show. [Edited 5/18/16 10:26am] Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam...

From what I recall, it was always seen as a sign of theft to him. My main point is, when you have someone harp that loudly, it usually comes from a place of guilt. Prince was likely guility because he had in his possession probably a slew of bootlegs over the years from his favorites. Prince was like us, he wanted the music as a keepsake for his time at the show & to learn & grow from that experience. But for some reason, he wanted to take it out on fans who recorded his shows in the same fashion he did. Kind of ridiculous if you think about it.
I'm almost certain that this wasnt the first time Prince likely did that. Musicians loved to pass things like this around because it was taboo. if it wasn't for these tapers, you wouldn't have the archive of records for legendary shows which we now do of all kinds of genres. I think bootlegs have contributed so much to legendary talents. Yea, it sucks you don't get the compensation for it, but were you going to put it out anyway? No, artists have to eat it when it comes to that.
BTW, how are you able to space lines in your posts? For some reason, I can't do this anymore, I don't understand why not. It just shows up all jumbled. If this is some html code thing, I'm not bothering with that. | |

'One thing I do want to say is they [paris audience] are very respectful. We asked that no one use cameraphones and they honored that request, unlike Americans who are so obsessed with technology. And we don't like to have our concerts filmed that way because it sounds so bad and then you give all the footage to somebody like YouTube, who's run by Universal publishing and some of those same lawyers. Alot of people don't know that. They just see the logos but we know all the behind the scenes guys. So we're just thankful that the people are so respectful and, on the quiet songs, no talking, you know, they're just very respectful and it's just wonderful.' - Prince (October 12, 2009) So it sounds like his problem was more with the quality and what people did with it after they recorded it.
