My story (The Live Out Loud Youtube fiasco)

We all know about JesterJenkins releasing Live Out Loud on YouTube (or a very brief snippet of it) but if you look at https://www.princevault.c...e_Out_Loud it also mentions JAK3Vision

That's me. I'm JAK3.

Jester got flown out to see a show and meet the man himself, but what did I get? It's a crazy story, and it's one that I have been waiting to tell until someone expresses interest. I tried giving an interview with a Prince blog but they were "unable to verify my claims" and it was never printed.

I guess what I'm wondering, does anyone remember this happening? Is there a forum for my story to be told, or am I going to keep this to my friends and family for the rest of my life?

Let's hear the story then, you're in the right place to tell it.

I think you're in the right place already - do tell! I recall Jester's story but have not heard yours.

There's usually someone here that can verify a story - as well as call bullshit on it.

It seems weird to me just to tell this story on prince.org and that's as far as it goes. I think it's a fascinating look at an attempt for peer to peer marketing, which he defnitely dabbled with a few years later trying to release HitnRun Phase 2 through his fans. It's exactly the same principle, and I think Jenkins and I were a test run of this idea..

.

So I received an email one night from 3rdeyegirl's email (which I won't disclose, but it's verified in several ways to be his actual email address - I can get into this if I need to)

.

"Eye got the new #RDEYEGIRL (yes, the 3 was a hashtag as it appears caps was on a little too early) leak... u interested??"

.

I thought it was a mass email sent out to everyone who had purchased something from their web shop at the time, back when it was 20pr1nc3.com or whatever. I replied back with a cheeky "As long as I get to pay for it" or something like that. I have all these emails but I'm still a little sore about the whole ordeal and I would rather not revisit them, as I'm also a little embarassed by it all

.

(By the way, I do not plan to post screenshots of any of the email correspondence, as I think that's in poor taste and would feel like I am exploiting my memories for entertainment)

.

I received an email a few minutes later, "How many people can U get this song 2?"

.

This is when I knew this was a personal email and not some mass spam. I freaked out.

.

Now, a little backstory on me at the time. I was a very hungry musician and had been working VERY hard on marketing myself and my music (I am since retired from the game so it's irrelevant now what I do) so I was very familiar with online marketing. I replied that if it was an exclusive to just me, I was sure that tens of thousands would listen to it, knowing that Prince was a huge star and has a sizable fan base, and even more people who are casually interested in his work. Was I wrong in thinking that little me could get that many views? Possibly, but I knew that if it had his name attached to it, that would help a great deal.

.

Correspondence went back and forth via email for probably 20 or so total emails. I was told to wait until a specific time, in which I would be sent the song.

.

I waited. and waited. and waited. and waited. Time passed so slowly, and we were in the middle of a snowstorm where I lived. I knew that I was going to make a YouTube video introducing the song, but I didn't have the internet speeds to be able to upload it quickly after I received it. I wanted to make sure that I was absolutely the first person to upload this song, which I ended up being about 30 minutes to an hour faster than Jenkins when it all came down to it.

.

So I went to my friend's house to record a video, as his internet was considerably faster than mine. I was nervous, I couldn't figure out what to say exactly, so when the email finally came, I was a wreck. I quickly recorded a video (I don't even have this video anymore on my hard drive, as I was expecting it to stay on YouTube which it did not)

.

I got many, many views on this video. Jenkins was the one who posted his on prince.org, while I did not, because I didn't have an account at the time and there is a waiting period before you can post here after registering. The views came in to this video so quickly that at one point the counter on YouTube broke, and I had to contact them and they told me that there was too much activity on the video and the counter might take 24 hours to resync.

.

Needless to say, I gave him his promotion he wanted. I went to sleep feeling satisfied, and when I woke up, Controversy Music had issues a copyright claim on the video and my entire YouTube account was BANNED. The video wasn't just taken down, the account was banned.

.

I emailed him yet again, "You could have just asked me to take down the video" and I heard nothing. I never received an email again, meanwhile Jester was flown out to meet him.

.

I have never understood why I was treated in the completely opposite manner as Jester. I have theories, but I won't go into that here, and would rather hear what other people have to say about this. I have to say that all in all, it ended up being an unpleasant experience for me, as it was rather embarassing to have this video blasted out everywhere on my social media, only for the next day the links lead to a video and an account that had been taken down.

Sorry to hear the details -- maybe it was a test to see who could get the video up fastest and a "winner" was chosen? I can't know, but in the end you were contacted personally by a legend, and it didn't work out. You got closer to an inner circle than most people. No doubt there are plenty of folks like you who had a less than desirable experience after getting close to the magic. I wouldn't pretend to know why or try to explain it, having never been remotely close.

.

Sadly, your experience will never happen to anyone else now.

Paragraph spacing has been broken for a while. Most people just use a period to insert a line break.
