Happy 29th Birthday, If I Was Your Girlfriend Released on May 6th, 1987. I can remember the first time I heard the single on the radio, and thinking WTF? I didn't actually own the album until Christmas 1987. My cousin Geoffrey, gleefully told me that he'd heard the song before me. Geoffrey said that Prince was singing "like a woman" and wanted to be some man's girlfriend, because he was obviously "a bender."  And... I always heard the song like that too. I didn't realise until years after, that the song was about wanting to be as close to his female lover, as she is to her girl-friends. If only he'd put a hyphen in the word "girlfriend." It would have been so much more apparent. But, that's the genius of the song, I guess. The ambiguity of the lyrics with that sped-up gender-fucked Camille vocal... My favourite Prince songs change as often as my socks, but I'll always consider this his opus. I could listen to it on repeat for a day and never get bored. Happy birthday If I Was Your Girlfriend. Some articles recently mentioned incorrect that Camille was his female alter ago, in that case your cousin would have been right. But that's not the case, and the lyrics of IIWYG are pretty clear as well: "If I was your girlfriend, would you remember
By the way, tomorrow is the 30th birthday of another classic single release Mountains. (well actually the 12" is more of a classic and that was released a bit later)

I love this song. One of the first I ever heard. Phenomenal drum sounds. I never understood why everybody said it was a mistake to release it as a single. The mistake was to not shoot a proper video for it. This live cut from the SOTT movie didn´t do the song justice at all. | |

I often change favorite Prince songs too and get so tired of hearing some that I never want to listen to them but If I Was Ur Girlfriend always gets love from me. I always hear the genius and emotion in it every time. I have loved the song ever since I heard it. It appealed to me because it was "weird" and "different" to me as a 12 year old then, but now I understand the true meaning behind it.
It's funny to think that our very own Prince started this social and gender awareness and justice thing before everyone else now. "I was here in the beginning and I'll be here forever more" | |

It's a song that defies description. It's unlike anything else ever recorded. Even though his voice is altered, I've always felt it's one of his most truthful songs. The lyrics and their delivery are simply sublime. | |

in my opinion this is his greatest piece of work. Just absolute genius perfection. Everything about it, the lyrics, the arrangement, the delivery, the protection, the concept. Absolutely fucking love it haha (excuse the language) I got two sides... and they're both friends. | |

This is the first song I ever listened to by Prince. I literally had no idea what I was listening to but my Husband (then boyfriend) is a huge Prince fan and dedicated it to me. He basically had to walk me through the song. When I finally got it and realized just how beautiful the song was , I realized I would never hear anything like that again. That song will always be one of my favorites. It started my love affair with Prince.
