I got into Johnny Cash a couple of years ago. Shouldn't I have? How about the few Joni Mitchell albums I've bought over the last year? Were they also a no-go?

Forgot about Nick Drake who died when I was 3 1/2 years old. My bad for only having a Paddington Bear single and Hans Christian Anderson LP.

Happy to have them join the party.

Prince has millions of fans who have yet to be born.

So true - I know that many will fall away after the tributes are done and the dust dies down, but we will all still be here - just as we were before & if the newbies stay - we can rejoice in their discoveries just as we made them and are making them again by playing things we may have negected in a while too.

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Given that I can't find anyone who shares my love of Prince and no one that will listen to me talk about him for lengths at a time, I would welcome people I know suddenly getting into him. They may be late but why does an understanding of his legacy have to end with us?

I don't mind if people are finding him now. Maybe after listening to some stuff people will stop going 'really, why?' When I say I love Prince.

However the increase in prices on some of the cd's on eBay are pissing me off. I'm short about 8 albums and now they are way too pricy to get:

I welcome all fans, no matter how great or limited their fandom may be. I'd call myself a hardcore fan, but I have no ownership in it. Prince owned a piece of me.

Prince is for everyone and I believe Prince wanted to be for everyone.

He was still playing Purple Rain for the first-timers right up to the end.

He was also playing Purple Music, he knew we were there too.

I hate them. They never know what they are talking about and you know they will have forgotten Prince by next month. I have no tolerance for any kind of insincerity.

You can ALWAYS tell a true admirer of Prince from one that is a "bandwagoner" (is that a word?). It's in the eyes - they light up and a big smile comes across their face and then the conversation begins.

That's how one of my close friends knew how special Prince is to me. I never really talked about him with others (I like to keep sacred things sacred) so when I asked her how she knew I would be devistated she just simply said "your eyes lit up whenever you talked about him." This, of course, had me bawling.

it's not about thinking we're cooler or better than anyone else. I can't speak for anyone but I hate liars and sheep. To the ones who honestly love his music now, welcome. But to everyone who's "sad" just to jump on the bandwagon, fuck off and leave this family alone to grieve. I don't understand. What do people get out of pretending to be so broken up over someone they didn't even like?

The more demand there is for his music, the more likely we are to see decent vault releases.

I guess it's good people are getting into Prince.

I've been going to yoga for maybe 5 years and I've always been keenly aware I've never heard one of the instructors play a SINGLE Prince song, not ONE and I've been to hundreds of 1 1/2 hour classes. Never a single Prince song.

Yesterday's class had some Prince and Prince covers.

I don't know.

How do you all feel about this?

1. Fuck em

2. I'm glad they weren't around when he was alive. Tickets were hard enough to get as it was.

Wow. Just... well, wow.

Kind of ironic, the biggest fans can be identified as the ones who DIDN'T run to Amazon on April 21.

you don't see a contradiction in saying you're not cooler than anyone but saying you hate liars and sheep?

The ones who've truly been bitten by the purple bug, I actually feel a bit sorry 4 them. They missed sooo much. They better save their pennies. The kids who weren't alive or were 2 young, I've noticed they have problems understanding certain things, references etc, they lack context re the times/history. Stuff goes over their heads.

Prince was a very large part of my childhood (especially the parts where my friends and I would have to go outside the box to get his albums because our Southern Pentecostal parents forbade us from listening to him). He's been on my radar ever since so you could say we've been in a 30 year relationship.

However, there was a lot that I missed. I was into other bands for a while and while he was always there, sometimes he was in the back.

I've mourned him for several reasons the last two weeks. I've mourned because he was alone and helpless in that elevator. I've mourned because his legacy could easily become tarnished. I've mourned because a piece of my childhood and teenage years that formed so many memories for me and my friends is gone.

But from what I read here, I could easily fall into this category of which you're telling the members to "fuck off."

Everyone shared their fandom in different ways. Everyone is mourning in different ways. To discredit anyone's connection to this man is unfair and reprehensible.

Did I encounter sorority girls at a screening of Purple Rain giggling and showing off their brand new purple skinny jeans? Of course I did. But I also encountered the rest of the theater crying and singing and dancing and it was the closest thing to church I'd gone to in a LONG time.

A high school friend was crying hysterically the day it happened. I couldn't figure it out because I'd never ever known her to even know Prince existed. Turns out, Prince was her father's favorite and the two of them spent her childhood bonding over Prince. Her father became terminally ill in 1998 and was given zero time but he kept pushing on because he said he want to see 1999. Clock struck, they played the song for him, and a couple of hours later he was gone.

My friend buried Prince after that which is why I never knew her to be a fan. But you can imagine his death hitting her hard because essentially Prince was al she had left of her father. I can't imagine her coming here and reading this.

This experience is different for everyone. Everyone is processing it and mourning differently. I don't think anyone should have to fuck off. In different ways and in different places we all loved this man. Let's be respectful.

Everybody started somewhere, unless you were staying down in Andre's basement with AC and Prince back in the day. A Johnny-Come-Lately can turn in to a real fan. With Prince's youtube policy, spotify policy and the idiots that think Prince died from removing to many ribs or can't get past the name change etc I can understand people not discovering Prince. What I think people don't like is the people who know nothing and claim to be a once removed member of the Revolution. If Prince has at any time moved you musically, spiritually or emotionally welcome to the org.

I'm a new member but I have been visiting this board for years now, because it is one of the best sources for Prince info. IF new fans are sincere and want to learn all they can about Prince and his music I am all for it. However there is always gonna be people who jump on the "I love such and such bandwagon" and I've been noticing that with some of these tributes whether on radio, tv or in print (eg. WHO mag) are not being researched properly eg. not mentioning his work with The Time, Jill Jones etc and I find that really annoying.

...to be fair I don't mind people who think they're cooler than everyone else, just as long as they keep it to themselves and exist in a state of quiet, smug satisfaction...it's the people who feel threatened and the manifestation of their insecurities result in a need to criticize others that do my head in!
