Ex-cholo is full of sorrow

Hi,

It's my first time posting, yet I have kept updated over the years regarding Prince thanks to this site.

I was a cholo (Chicano gang member) when I first heard and immediately realized what a unique and mutli talented artist Prince was.

I would share Prince's music with all of my homies and they were stunned to find out, as they listened to his gems, what an extraordinary artist he was and they, in turn, were mesmerized by his artistic abilities.

I was also gay and in the closet, yet they had no idea...

By posting this I just wish, in a humble way, to express my pain and sorrow for our loss.

My Prince has passed away and I am devastated.

Thanks for sharing ..

I (and Im sure most of us on the org) feel your anguish and know how hard it is...

we have lost a part of ourselves and our identity.. .not to mention what we all had hoped from the future from him.

I was a young gay kid too... and my god.. when Prince told me to get 'closer to my higher self' on Anna Stesia - i knew that if I could hold on.. there would be a better version of myself one day... not the scared and confused little kid i was... he gave me hope and I will forever love that man for it.

It sounds like Prince helped you to accept who you are, and also to imagine something better for yourself than gangs.
It's amazing that you joined so many years ago, and never posted before.
You must be grieving a lot to post now.
i think people here understand.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your kind words.

As a former Chicano gang member that happened to be gay, Prince definitely contributed to my coming out process which, in general, was very difficult.

All of my homies back then, once they heard and watched Prince's concerts and music that I shared with them, were amazed by Prince and I assume that they must be shocked about what happened.

Yes. Anna Stesia was very powerful back then as a gay closeted Chicano gang member. It was also a song that my closest homies loved, after I shared it with them.

Regardless of being in the closet, I just kept on sharing his music and videos with my fellow gangmembers (homies) back then without any reluctance.

I wanted all of them to hear the genius that was Prince.

A couple of them did say that they thought he was gay and I did become self conscious because I was closeted, but that did not deter me.

Prince was awesome and everyone needed to know it!

I also had several posters of Vanity, Apollonia and other proteges all over my bedroom walls.

They were beautiful and I loved them.

My friends and family thought that I was straight because of that...
