I heard on tv that they're trying to pass something, where if you go on you tube and listen to music, and music video and I think even interviews, you have to pay. I understand music, audio. Because the artists isn't getting paid for that everytime some listens to it on you tube. But I thought music video and interviews with the artists were free. Because when I watch music videos on tv its free, when i watch interviews and the artists perform its free.

Wrong forum + dupe.

What you saw was linked to here: http://prince.org/msg/8/428286 which was moved to the correct forum yestereday.

where do i put it, ok but this is about listening and watching princes music

Well, Prince has stated how he felt about his music being on youtube. We can assume the estate will follow that same stance and eventually wipe the site clean again of any unauthorized footage/audio.

An entire generation consumes their music for free on youtube and other free versions of streaming sites. Time for folks to start paying in one form or another. Whether it be by watching a 30 second commercial -- or just having them removed completely from the site. What you saw on the news had nothing to do with Prince -- but was relatable because he was a musician. Therefore, why it was moved to Music: Non Prince yesterday.

Lastly, music videos aren't free. They always cost something. Either the artist pays for them out of their own pocket, or it is taken out of the contract of the signed artist -- depending on what is in their contract. When you see music videos on your television (MTV, Palladium, etc.) -- you're not seeing those for free. You pay a shitload of $$$ every month to Comcast/Time Warner/DirectTV, etc. Your cable company then pays a portion of that money to those channels. Then you have to watch 10 minutes of commercial for every 20 minutes of actual content. So you're paying there too. Same with interviews. With Prince, he would have interviews taken down -- or the company that owned the rights would have them taken down. So if NPG Music Publishing didn't take down a Leno interview, then maybe Comcast/NBC would.

Nothing is free. And with companies having their own channels for streaming now (Hulu/NBC/Tonight Show/SNL etc), they are more likely to have non-official channels on youtube served with DMCA takedown notices for posting videos that would otherwise be available via their official channels (streaming/official youtube channel/hulu/etc).

I have no problem with people sharing his music/videos privately. (Obviously). But when folks upload everything an artist has ever done, including videos from a current tour -- you're really fucking with their livelihood. Not everyone is as wealthy as Prince was. You see artists that make a living (so they can pay rent, for their children's schooling, food, etc) on the road -- having "fans" posting EVERYTHING, when they have no idea how an artist might feel about that. It really does feel like you've been violated when you're an artist and someone posts your work without getting permission or even giving credit.

Eventually, I see an annual fee to settle all this. Personally, I'd want it in my Prime prescription or other entities that will allow us to download or buy physical product.

They do. As part of your Prime subscription, you have access to Amazon music to stream -- but just like on Tidal, Apple Music, etc -- if you want to keep something, you have to buy it.

It's not like the 90s where you could go into Barnes And Noble or Borders and listen to something on the headphones -- and then go over and pick up a copy and walk on out without paying wink

I have no interest in that, as a child of the 70s/80s. I want to hold the product in my hand. So, best case scenario -- on vinyl + CD + MP3 download code. It happens sometimes, but most of the time when you buy the vinyl -- you then have to go steal the digital version somewhere online because not everyone has the equipment to rip to MP3 or lossless from vinyl. I take that back. Best case scenario is when an artist does this. I would much rather support an artist as directly as possible.

Digital only sucks. No cover and inner art. No liner notes. No lyrics to read through. Just listening through your crappy white headphones sad

I guess it depends on the company, I type in prince and theres a bunch of his stuff on you tube, and i dont mean from the tour. I mean videos, like one i never seen like "the one" and interviews with oprah, and his last interview with aersiono hall. So if its a violation to him, why are these things still up? Your willing to jump down my thorat for asking a question, and using curse words. But not everyone knows this information, I didnt't know watching a prince interview or one of his videos on you tube is costing him money, I don't know everything, maybe that explains why I cant watch his video on tv, only if you have a hd box, i'm willing to pay to watch interviews of him and mayte, of him or his videos like diamonds and pearls, 7, and the one, because unfortunately I will never be able to see it on tv again, because of his passing

Most of what you see on youtube was uploaded post-April 21. Same with the bootlegs on ebay. Same with the bootlegs (radio broadcasts) on Amazon and other similar sites.

That stuff will all be taken down when the estate hires the right people to do those things. They should set up an email for us to report bootlegs and sites that post all of his official music for free to download.

actually no, princes video "diamonds and Pearls" was posted 2 years ago, someone posted it and they took it off of vh1, and even mayte music video she sang in was posted 4 years ago, so some of princes and mayte stuff was posted recently and some has been on there when prince was alive. I understand songs and audio, i can see videos too, but interviews with artist, prince looses money for someone putting up a interview of him on the aersino hall show too? They should have a prince channel that way you can pay a subscription to watch princes stuff, or you can buy the dvds off of amazon. in fact theres a song on you tube it says princes song from the vault, where he talks in most of it and then sings

Are we talking about videos/movies? cuz that's what I was referring to. I wasn't talking about vinyl, CDs or MP3s....
