Shocking headlines - how can they get away with it?!

This post is offered to help anyone who might be struggling with the sensational headlines in the press.

In the U.S. you cannot be sued for defaming the dead. So when a big star passes on, if you work for a less than reputable news source you can generate a lot of sales with shocking claims and not risk being sued for being inaccurate or malicious.

Hope this helps. Perhaps we should make this a sticky?

The media is spewing nothing but untruths and made up BS.

I am ignoring that and will wait for the 'official' autopsy and 'official' toxicology reports when that information gets released................

Till then, ignore them.............

Agreed on ignore. The original post was offered in case some are finding it hard, or painful, to ignore. We always hear "get ready for the terrible stories" after a death, but I've always wondered why the stories come out and how do they get away with it. Knowing the legal system creates opportunity for media trolls helps me keep a less than open mind.

You know i was thinking the same thing but it appear the National E report is acting as the source to report in more mainstream news outlet. Mainstream just needs a source. They are being used to "confirm" the blind item. So the National E saved Bli nd Go ssip and M T O. T M Z used M T O to report the rumor. (look at the bottom of T M Z page at their links. Bli nd gos sip published subsequent items claiming a coverup to cover themselves if he didn't pass from the rumored diease. A cover up will be hard if anyone is old enough they tried to cover liberace's cause of death and got caught. People would have to notified to get tested (Health dept.). I'm sure Minn Health Dept is watching. How did National E report it I can't find the report but i briefly read it they have 2 sources. An email saying P had long time sickness and a friend of a "eye" witness to one of P's Prescipt bottles. the friend told the eye witnes that the drug was for HIV. NE just connected the dots. It dosen't have to be true just that the source believed it to be true.

It doesn't matter if it's true at all. Now that he has passed, anybody can now come forward with a false shocking claim and sell it to the news because they have no fear of being sued. On the flipside, people with true stories that might also be shocking may also now come forward since they no longer fear being sued.

Is there any chance this type of publicity can lead to good in the long run? Maybe I'm being naive, but Prince is everywhere at the moment and the reports are mostly conflicting. In a couple of weeks, the truth will emerge and the non-fans will be interested. This means they've probably clicked on and read multiple Prince articles in the month after his death, which means they'll probably go and listen to Purple Rain... and that's when their ears will open up.

However it is common knowledge and common courtesy not to speak I'll of the dead. This courtesy cam be applied to all kinds of private places. Such ad the org. The custom may be enforced via locking threads. Hint hint, wink wink.
No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ prince. He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take prince away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >
