Is It Wrong For "Sister" To Be One Of Your Favorite Prince Songs?

Lately, for obvious reasons, a ton of people have been asking us Prince fans to recommend some good stuff they never heard.

.

Sure I have no problem saying check out "Strollin'," "1 + 1 + 1 = 3," "Space," "Beautiful, Loved, and Blessed"....but I sure haven't suggested what is one of my top 10 Prince songs, "Sister."

.

Since I first heard that song back when my older brother bought that album back in '80 I loved it. Musically it is perfect -- frantic I-IV-V chords on the guitar, a mad rush, quick, and it's done. Basic rock and roll with a savage and raw punk/funk attitude. Brilliant. Lyrically, yeah, I know it's an uncomfortable lyric, but I find it insane and hysterical. And who in this world can not love when the music drops out and Prince screams: "Oh, motherfuckershe'samotherfucker, can't you understand!"

.

I love the song. Every so often I just have to blast that tune. When I get out my guitar..."Sister" is played. But...man, that is one song that I really hesitate to say to someone, "Check out "Sister."

.

Yes, these days people are playing "Purple Rain" over and over again. But I want to shout, "Oh, motherfuckerlistenmotherfuckers play "Sister"! But I just can't.

.

Anyone else feel conflicted over one of Prince's best songs?

I see Sister as showing him as very vulnerable. Remeber he's the younger victim in the song. Its a song about abuse as much as Luka is.

There's a TV program in Holland which airs every year in december called Top 2000 and they have local "celebrities" promoting their favourite songs. Mostly it involves folks talking about Stairway to Heaven or We Could Be Heroes, but once there was a guy, I can't for the life of me remember who, he was the son of a famous footballer (I can't for the life of me remember who) and he said, "this is just a good normal song about having sex with your sis" and then they showed Sister from the Dortmund concert.

I usually sing the song to my friends xD. Most of the time though, I replace sister with Trisha, and my sister with That Woman. I don't like to say it cause I have sisters around.

I feel some kind of love 4 U
I don't know your name
This is the kind of love that takes 2
I want U and I'm not ashamed

This. Plus, it's a little new-wave punk gem.
Neurotic, as its subject.

It's raw and unabashedly "Prince", so if it's your favourite song I don't see how you can't recommend it!

depends on what kind of relationship one has with their sister I suppose.

No way, it ain't wrong, I love Sister! I think it's hilarious, actually. To me, that song was done with a wink...a sort of, let's see if y'all can take THIS. He was essentially trolling everyone, putting out the most controversial thing he could think of. It's so over the top.

But agreed...it's probably not the best conversation starter! smile

I am 47 but I have a 17 year old sister. She lives in a different state and my dad lives a few hours from me. My dad, my sister, and my brother and his family were in town for a visit. The day everyone was leaving my dad wanted to get on the road early so my brother and I were going to take my sister to the airport. So my sister in law says "Oh you boys take your sister to out to lunch and then to the airport and you can play some Prince songs for her..." and something about just be careful which songs.... and I said "Well I know ONE song I will not be playing..." and my brother (who thanks to me knows his 79-94 catalog very well) stated to laugh and laugh. My sister and law and my sister and my dad wanted to know what song... and we refused to tell.

I know that, you know that....but musically the song is Prince's most instantly likeable and enjoyable. Just a minute and a half long, rapid fire pulse....musically that song grabs you the first time you hear it. It truly is the one song we should all recommend to a non-fan who is just now looking to hear a great Prince song.

But would you suggest it?

Being totally non-religious and utterly sexually incompetent, I probably shouldn't even like Prince at all, but damn, songs like Sister are so gloriously awful, they put a smile on my face.

I remember, at around eleven or twelve, my grandmother once asking me what I was listening to on my headphones, so I showed her the cover of my Controversy cassette. She said "oh, what a handsome man!" If she only knew what lyrics I was listening to...

Also damn glad I wasn't listening to Dirty Mind at the time.

'Papa' From the Come album is pretty darkly sexual too.
