Love or Money song?

I remember this great track from UTCM, does anyone know if this ever made it to CD format?

cool To the best of my knowledge it has not. I did however download it from the internet and burned it onto a CD-R.

Buy the 12". Play it at 33 rpm as opposed to 45. Classic Sly & the Family Stone is what you'll hear!

This was a terrible omission from the B-Sides disc that accompanied the Hits 1 & 2. They had to be selective for a single disc, but boooo.

The 12" version was never officially released. Years ago, I saw it included on the awesome '12 Inches 2 A Yard' 4 disc set (unofficial release)

Of course it was officially released! It was the b-side of Kiss!

B-Side of Kiss - yes one of my favorite songs, and moments in UTCM. Also he played it at a P&aM pseudo-rehearsal on Nov 7. Great show...

I'm relatively young, so I never owned a 12 inch before scoring the "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" 12 inch at a used bookstore last fall. Not knowing you have to adjust the speed on a disc the size of a 33, I played "Hot Thing" (the reverse) first at 33rpm. It blew me away - the drums sounded huge, the horns sounded loose - more like a track for slow grinding than fast dancing, with a groove that went on forever. I actually copied this version of the beat for one of my own tunes. I'm kicking myself for not picking up the I Wish U Heaven and Kiss 12 inches at the same time, because of course they were gone within a day of Prince's passing.

Agreed, I am very fond of Love Or Money!!! They could have taken 200 Balloons off, for example.

"Love or $" they leave out, "4 the Tears in Ur Eyes" they include. Not to diss the man right now, but I always skipped it. I suppose that says more about my own beliefs, though, and less about the song's quality. "God" I always thought was spooky and cool. That B-Sides disc is one of the best Prince "albums," IMO. It bugs me a little that The Very Best of Prince topped the charts, because the title is so misleading and I wonder if people will skip over The Hits/The B-Sides as a result.

Thanks for all the responses, I would have thought they would have put it on The Hits/B Sides triple or the Ultimate Prince double. I will have to do some searching around........

You don't HAVE to! I just saw a documentary about Sly on TV years ago where somebody said that when you slowed the track down, it sounded like Sly. Prince probably never intended this. This guy (I can't for the life of me rmember who it was) probablydiscovered this whenaccidentslly playing the record at the wrong speed. But snyway, the 12" of Kiss is a record worth having! OMG isn't that Prince on the TV? Sal, don't you touch that dial! Do you value your life?! Classic comedy!

I like 200 Balloons but already had it on CD when the Hits collection came out. Love or Money would have been a nicer thing to have on disc, though it probably would have been an edited version.

--- No young people I remember reading about changing the speed in the Rolling Stone music notes column. I went home and gave it whirl and I definitely think he did it purpose. He loved some Sly.

It's available to buy in lossless FLAC, here:

http://www.qobuz.com/gb-e...3497990412

It may be a transfer from an actual vinyl record - I'm unsure.

It sounds good enough from the sample though.

I use Qobuz all the time - they're legit.

It says this site is not available to purchase from in the US. Any stateside sources for this?

I had listened to the song on 33rpm before and I tried again now. What exactly makes it sound like Sly & the Family Stone? I don't hear it...

I suppose it is Prince's voice that reminds some people of Sly's voice, but I don't feel it takes a lot of imagination. Maybe I just know Sly's music too well. smile

And I am not against looking for easter eggs in music at all. I mean, the "love is here" if you play "paisley park" backwards. (probably why he named his studio complex that) Try the start of the 12" version, it is clearest there.

Also, America needs to be on a 33rpm disc, as the tempo is then exactly 4 beats per rotation. (which is probably why the 12" is so long, to force it to 33rpm) I found this out when I had a record player that wasn't calibrated correctly, the needle would randomly skip a groove. With normal tracks, it is jarring. With America, you miss lines of the song, but the music just plays on. It's surreal.

Anyway, all I'm saying is that I like these little things, but I cannot hear Sly in the slowed down Love or $, no matter how hard I try.

Paisley Park is in your heart - Love Is Here!

When the 12" of Kiss was released, the extended version of Love Or Money was on the flip in the US, but they still used the shorter version on the UK 12" That really annoyed me. Had to wait for the import and buy again.
