Lovesexy Memphis Interview: The Truth

Why
I always thought that I'd have the opportunity to apologize to Prince, but I am the one who gave the interview as Prince. I did it out of love—the concert at Memohis had not sold out or sold at a quick pace. I was living there temporarily and wanted the place to represent. I thought an interview the day before would drum up more interest and we'd all have an even better time.

How It Happened
I called the radio station and pretended to be a tour manager. After chatting up people at the station (asking about the excitement level for of the city for the upcoming concert) I asked if they'd be interested in a phone-interview with Prince...

I had to arrange the time for the interview around break time at my job (9:20 or so) the following day. During this time the radio station (K-97 FM) began making promos and played them almost non stop from what I remember. I was excited about this happening because I felt a few more tickets for the concert were probably being sold. It was this thought that allowed me to not feel guilty for deceiving people.

The Chat
The following morning I dutifully called the private number I was given. I called from the most private area of my workplace that I could find (if you listen closely you can hear background noise. I played it off as Orince would be calling from the tour bus). I called as a handler and once I got the interviewer on the line I told him to hold for "Prince".

"Hello. This is Prince"
I was well-verses with Prince's story. I'd been a fan since the beginning. I play guitar and piano, and bear a passing resemblance to him and was always asked if I liked him, so I started to listen and get into him. By Lovesexy I counted myself amongst one of his biggest admirers of his talent and story. I gave the interview without any special preparation. I am impulsive and move the thrill of not knowing what is coming next. I didn't disguise my voice and I wasn't nervous. I answered all questions easily and even threw in a reference to Spiderman for my best friend (a huge fan of the wall crawler) and an inspirational message to myself ("Mariano"). I thought I was helping and that was the thing that drove me.

After more than an hour (yes, I was reprimanded at work) and some cutting some novelty commercials for the station I wished them love and ended the call.

Aftermath
Well, the reaction was historic. The interview was played at least twice and the entire city seemed to be talking about it and buzzing about the the interview. The radio station arranged to have "Prince" visit the set of "Great Balls of Fire" being filmed in Memphis at the time starring Dennis Quaid (obviously I couldn't accept).

It was a fantastic show. I'd seen him after that (Rave, for example, with Chaka and Larry) but nothing compares to seeing Prince for the first time. The car, the basketball court—amazing.

I thought that Prince learned of this and "punished" us by not playing "Alphabet Street" (which contains a reference to Tennessee). Turns out I may have left after the second encore thinking the show was over, because I learned later that he, indeed, sang the song as his finale.

I'm telling my story now because, obviously I can't apologize to him. But, also, I'd heard that people still thought Prince gave the interview or that other people in his band did so. I want to clear up anything. There is so much rumor bow about his life now and I don't want to contribute to it. Again, it was done out of love. Thank you.
