A fan since 1978...

It was 1978. I was riding with my then boyfriend from Clinton, SC to Laurens. It was the afternoon. Yes, I remember the exact time I first heard the 'beautiful one's' voice...Soft & Wet. I thought the singer was female. (I was right and wrong). I HAD to find out who the singer was. I did...I bought tickets for the 1980 March 5th Fire It Up tour with Rick James and Prince in Greenville, SC. (That's me and my ex at the concert-all future boyfriends HAD to resemble Prince lol).

Now I loved Rick but when I saw Prince on that tour I thought I was on another planet. Rick who??? This was when the concert floor had no seats and it was first-come-first-served...and I believe I got both. wink I stood there in utter shock & awe as Prince (in his speedo and leg warmers) tore into my soul and reached notes and heights I couldn't believe. Those lyrics...those eyes...that voice. That 'I-don't-give-a-shit-what-people-think!'

The guy (in the pic) I was with at that concert got angry at me for staring like a zombie and not wanting to leave the stadium until the roadies disassembled the stage set. I stayed until the lights went out.

So I was already in love and four of my future boyfriends would even look like Prince. One 'look-alike' proposed while we danced to International Lover. heart But none of my ex's could compare to Prince and they knew it. Bless their hearts they tried though.

When Purple Rain was released the 'look-alike' and I went to Myrtle Beach and saw it 5 times that day. That wasn't nearly enough. I wore lace over my eye to some club. Didn't give two fucks that some girl in the club laughed at me and snottily said, "Who do you think you are? Prince?" I just said, "I wish!" and kept on dancing. I bought a ruffly shirt and wore it to death. I had his 'shower poster' on my bedroom wall. My then 'look-alike' boyfriend even liked it. We did a photo session with him posing as Prince...yes, even the shower poster. Wish I still had it.

Prince was complicit in my life-changing decisions to divorce a physically abusive macho JW husband and eventually to 'question' and rearrange everything I believed in. Prince was my one true love. He still is...there will never be another. sad Nothing compares to him... heart

Dang, that must have shocked you when he converted into something you got away from. I read similar stories from fans who were ex-JW. They were finally free and then this.

Sorry for your loss. I think Its been 18 years for me, I was 12 when I got ahold of Purple Rain in the 90s

No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ prince. He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take prince away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >

Yes it did shock me...I thought it was a joke. I missed the 'old' Prince who taught me to love everyone with no judgments. confused

I don't think that there's a woman alive that was a real Prince fan, that didn't feel the way you do about him, I know I did. Like my cousin said to me when she called me about his death....."that in my mind, Prince was my husband" lol.....He had a lot of women in life that he knew about, and those like me, that he didn't know about. I will love him forever!

Disclaimer...I wasn't a nutty fam who went off the deep end and stalked him or anything. boxed I just recognized his genius and adored his non-traditional masculinity. Set my standards for what I liked in men for the rest of my life. IMO he was perfection...

No no, I mean a fan whom the music spoke to, and was enamored. From the first time hearing Little Red Corvette, I was drawn to that sound. I was in grade school and needed to have the album. From that point on, the music just spoke to me, album after album. It was like the music really did reach the core of my being.

Sorry it came off the wrong way. I guess I should have drawn a line between the are deep purple, and off the deep end purple fans. Didn't mean to paint you in a negative way.

hug Didn't think you did...and lol at the "off the deep end purple fans." When I heard Soft & Wet something 'clicked' in my head. And in the coming years I never heard any music such as his. The lyrics spoke right to me it seemed. Purple Rain sealed the deal forever. wildsign
