the NUDE tour is underrated

hi all, so I'm listening to the Tokyo Dome show

August 31,1990.

I always see praise for all his 80s tour but seldon this one.

Prince did full versions of all the songs on this tour,no fucking medleys.

a killer Question of you, a great WDC.

I totally dig this.

In hindsight, I really like it, too. Especially because of those full songs he played during that tour. And I like the selection of songs he played...a mix of the latest three albums and some classics. But back then I didn´t appreciate it as much as I do today simply because of all that hype around Tim Burton´s Batman movie. And I wasn´t a big fan of the Game Boyz.

-

I really started appreciating this tour (and the music of that era and those albums) a couple of years later, around the Symbol album era. It took me some time to digest that Batman and Graffiti Bridge era. wink . I also like the sound of it, the instruments, the band, Miko on guitar and the incredible Michael Bland when he was still very young and a little bit of a diamond in the rough before he became that beast and master on the drums. And Levi....and Dr. Fink!

Rosie became a bit overpowering sometimes but all in all it was a tight band and show. And you are right, now that I think about it it is indeed a very underrated tour, often considered a quick cash cow to make some money because of the superexpensive and extravagant Lovesexy tour that preceded it.

.

The version of Nothing Compares 2 U with just Prince on the piano is by far my favorite version and rendition of that song ( the one he played in Buenos Aires.....though I´m not sure if that was part of the Nude tour or just a one-off gig.....I think it was the latter).

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Great review @ koolEaze.
when I saw the show in Sweden(I lived in
Norway at the time)I was disappointed
after the Lovesexy extravaganza.
I agree with you that it's hindsight
that really makes this great.

It has just hold up so well.

As someone who really loves the Batman album, the Nude Tour has always been one of my favorites because it's the closest thing we got to a Batman Tour razz. I also like the non-medley aspect to this tour as well.

-

Personally, I would have loved to seen more Batman songs in the seltist. I'm surprised he didn't include Electric Chair, because the live SNL performance we saw in 89' was legendary.

Have to agree, the Question of U/Electric Man segment is just stunning. Loved the Partyman look and strut. Then Bambi! My first concert so also a lot of sentimental reasons. Interesting that this was called the nude tour as a sign of just how stripped down a show it was and now compared to the current tour this looks like a full blown-out production wink

Always thought it was cool, and his dancing was cool in this phase. When Doves Cry was great. Maybe that's the unheard bassline?

No bells & whistles...the music was the focus. The version of "Bambi" performed with that blistering guitar intro is one of my all time favourtite live moments.

I really like Nude show at Tokyo,

but.. the Prince Nude show at Gentofte, Copenhagen 1990 was (I hate to say it) really bad.

A Prince show in bright daylight, very uninspired and short concert.

I was there dressed as the joker/ gemini together with my littlebrother, who was at that moment a Prince fan too. We had purple jackets on with orange colored japanese letters on the sleeves (which we had seen in the Partyman video), green hair - and white make up in the half of the face, red lipstick too. Haha we were looking great... lol

We were both very disappointed with this concert, no atmosphere at the stadium at all, later I saw the Tokyo show on tv..... much much better.

Nude 1990 is my only really bad Prince concert experience.

I'm sorry the hear that my Scandinavian brother!

jeg var i Scandinavium,Goteborg og det var knall!

Prince outside tends to be not ideal.

the Lovesexy Norway concert was outside and I felt cheated.

Wow, awesome pics! Sucha cool thing to do. I sometimes think having a concert in the daylight is a very different experience, you sometimes lose a bit of the mystery and lighting.

It felt like a cash-in tour to me! Short and stripped down, trying to make up for the lovesexy fiasco.

what, the Lovesexy tour a failure, a fiasco??

Funkomatic you gotta be an american to think so..? question eek

Prince played for 28,000 people on Lovesexy, in Copenhagen Denmark, that was a huge concert on danish ground and also one of his most successful concerts imo. And the Dortmund show (Germany) later in '88, the tv broadcast was brilliant. Wow, those were days of pure class, imo....

I was buying the Lovesexy live VHS video tapes, as soon they were released, and I loved everything about them. I am sure many here feels the same.. wink

Financially, of course! We all know that the Lovesexy tour was one of his best ever.

During the Nude tour he looked kinda unhealthy, very pale, maybe due to stress idk. Thought I've heard something about him flying back to London all the time in order to get some things done etc.

Still remember the first day at the Kuip in Rotterdam.

Thunder, lightning, heavy rain. Nice view from the Maastribune.

Back there the second day on the field...! biggrin

There was this nasty HIV/AIDS rumor around that time because he looked so pale and fragile.

Many magazines of lesser quality picked up on that rumor and spread it further.

Are you in the USA? Because from what I remember , both, the Lovesexy tour and the album were celebrated in Europe whereas in America the tour was a financial fiasco and the album caused a lot of controversy because of its cover.

Same for me! Way up above on the first night, in the field the next. And when he started The Question of U everbody flashed their lighters to the beat. Boom...boomboom...flash...flasflash... That first day was also the very first concert of the tour, so no one had heared it and this happened completely spontaneous. That was a wonderful moment. Probably the only time in my life that I regretted being a non-smoker.... But yeah, the rain spoiled it, the first concert was even cut short.

My first P concert was the Nude Tour Show at Nice, in France.
I have obviously great memories of it, I will never forget that day.

This apart, I think the setlist and the songs renditions on the entire tour were great.

a) The re-arranged "Alphabet St." was really great and funny, for years I wished a studio version to surface, until the "Spanish Harem" SAB release containing a great sounding recording of the rehearsal.

b) It was the first time he proposed his version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" and probably the only one that it sang it normally and not in somewhat "Las Vegas" version as after (like the duet with Rosie on "The Hits", I never liked it in full way, too manierism)

c) The guitar intro applied to "Do Me Baby" was incredible (the version from Tokyo is one of the P live rendition to which I return more, of all tours and of all songs).

d) It was a greatest hits show, but absolutely not predictable

e) Last but not least... "The Question Of U". That live version was amazing. Really amazing.

I think the "Nude Tour" was not particularly well received from many fans only because of the fact that it came after the "Lovesexy Tour".

Obviously it was less original and varied (I judge the "Lovesexy Tour" the definitive P tour and concert, no one can beat it), but all in all I think "The Nude Tour" was really a great experience.

Yes, the contrast between Lovesexy and Nude is pretty big.

But stll Nude has it's qualities...!

^The point isn't whether or not Americans think they're the center of the world. The point is, if Prince lost money on the American leg of the Lovesexy Tour then it was a fiasco. And that influenced his decision to do a cheaper tour and not tour the US on a big scale anymore. It would take another ten years before he did another large American tour. (Jam.of the Year.)

America being the center of the world is the issue (BUT) Prince is American so that makes a big difference.

Prince was a bit absent from American during 1987-1988

My second Prince show ever, not long after Lovesexy came to town.

He did a one-off show at the St. Paul Civic Center (RIP), following the $200-a-ticket charity benefit at Rupert's (RIP) for Big Chick (RIP), who had just passed.

He knocked the ticket price down to 10 bucks as an olive branch for those who couldn't afford the benefit, or were unable to get tickets before it sold out, which was a nice thing to do.

MC Flash opened, and we hated it. Maybe we were too young to appreciate that kind of music at the time. But when the P R I N C E letters starting to descend from the rafters, it was game-on. He got a huge hometown response during the entire show.

I loved that he opened with The Future, which was kind of an odd one to start with, since not many people knew it. The Question Of U was unreleased at the time, and was very intriguing. The live performance with the Electric Man bit is a classic at this point.

I think the tour morphed into something better after he brought it to Europe, and the rest of the world. We didn't get Bambi or Sex. We did get the fringe trousers though. wink

damn, I don't even remember the Batman logo in the background.

well,I was a teenager lol.

do you have any more pics, OldFriends4Sale?

I agree with the poster who wanted Batman songs.

it was the first tour not based on his new album.

I was really surprised at the concert since this was before setlists were

readily available.

I remeber getting a VHS of the La Coru~na show and watched it pretty much every day for months!

The high hat was a bit distorted, and the spanish commentary was a bit distracting, but i couldn'd stop watching the great show.

The best highlights for me were

-the relentless onslaught of the trio (The Future, Housequake, 1999) intro. ENERGY!!!

-Kiss/costume change/Peter Gunn

-Purple Rain (first verse, solo, re-arranged breakdown, woo-hoo's)

-The Question Of U, theatrical dancing, Electric Man (as stated before)((i also thought it fit way better to this song than with Head on the Parade Tour))

-When Doves Cry (no guitar, just Levi's BASS!!!)

.

Later on in life i got to see the Tokyo show and was taken aback by the blistering addition of Bambi (although he did rehash the Let's Go Crazy solo riff)

-lotsa great dancing, too!

Prost!
