"Poem" - Come and the Song of Songs/Solomon

Song of Songs/Somomon 8:3:

His left hand would be under my head,

And his right hand would embrace me.

Pheremone:
My left hand under your head,
While my right embraces time

I'm intruigued by how Prince broke up and sprinkled bits of the original biblblically inspired song "Poem" throughout the album Come — integrating joy (and the joy of sex) into an otherwise dark album (about child abuse, anger, loneliness, lust, despair and racial strife). Wish a had a copy of the orginal "Poem."

As he stands outside the Sagrada Família Basílica on the album cover, there's obviously tension between whether one is being invited to a funeral ("Prince: 1958–1993") or a wedding.

By comparison, both "Papa" and "Race" soar where the recent "Baltimore" falls flat in addressing race — rythmically, lyrically and philosophically.

good catch about the Song of Solomon! always nice to have some more information cool

i still think that this album suffers from the long version of Come as the opening track.
should have been an edit, or one of the many different versions, perhaps the earliest,
more rock version with the whole 'sticks n stones' verse. that would have been so cool.
now the album starts and i love the song but it goes on for too long, and the sucking/

head noises are just silly.

then at the other end of the album, closing things off with "orgasm" is also not nice at
all falloff just another track from the period like Strays or something to ease you out
would have been nicer.

01. Come [early version]

02. Space

03. Pheromone

04. Loose
05. Papa
06. Lovesign [original]

07. Race

08. Dark

09. Solo

10. Letitgo

11. Strays Of The World

love

anyway, despite those really minor complaints, i still hold this album in high regard and

have loved it from day 1. great collection of tracks, but with a little tweak could've been

even better.

also, this would have been a great album to release as a deluxe version with an extra
disc featuring remixes, since he made them for most of the tracks anyway. like the long
version of Race, the electronic version of Come, the Space Universal Love remix, some
Loose mix, So Dark [with the coda], Letitgo Remix etc. love

perhaps that's why i love this album so much, because there is so much going on around
it as well, with all those singles and remixes. it feels like a lot of effor went into the songs,
eventhough many people seem to hate this album because it's a 'contractual obligation'.

i think prince released many albums after this one where he was not under any contract,

yet spent significantly less time on the project.

Agree with most of that, apart from Strays Of The World - never really liked it. But as you say it would've been better than Orgasm. I was blasting the CD in my room when I first got it on the release day and couldn't turn it off quick enough when that come on with my mother downstairs!
.
This was the golden era for me, seemed to be maxi singles and albums getting released every other week.
.
I think he also mentions Solomon in Big Fun. 'Solomon he ain't got no more woman than me' or something like that

ugh, yes this was such a good era. all these live shows that were being bootlegged,

featuring mostly new material. all the side projects, weird shit going on lol and his
own albums (gold/come) were absolutely amazing.

and yes he does mention Solomon on Big Fun, indeed nod

didn't he also mention him in the backmasked bit on "Boom"? i can't remember what
that said, though for some reason i remember something about Solomon, but i could
be wrong there.

Strays of the World was originally meant to be the album´s closer, and in my opinion it should have stayed on the album. Great song, great music by the original NPG and great lyrics. And it perfectly fits into that whole Come theme of the album, especially the ending, where he says "Come!".

Ending it the way it ends now feels like something is missing.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

some Prince maxi singles were almost more fun than some of his albums
