[Edited 1/13/16 9:03am]

Flock of Seagulls was #200. How does listing them invalidate Prince being #1 with a decade best 26 hits and 378 weeks on the chart.

Prince was also #18 in the 90s with 19 hits and 216 weeks on the charts.

You will never win in this place with some people i think jaawwnn is trolling you, its now troll central this place. Am learning slowly not to take the bait. cool

David Bowie was a better artist. Prince is the better musician. But, the key difference is that Bowie did not care about the bsusiness and focused on his art. When Bowie spoke he was profound and on a different level. That is part of his legacy. Prince has become a broken record on his anti-record label crusade. Don't get me wrong, I think he is right but it has overshadowed his genius and has consumed him in a way that has taken away from his artistry.

I mostly agree, but Bowie did also care about the business side of things. He just never made as many boneheaded mistakes as Prince has and continues to do. For example, the Bowie bonds from 1997 or so was pretty cool. And Bowienet!

I don't think Prince's view of his own shitty business decisions (of which there are many) matters all that much. He can pretend the Lotusflower website was a great idea all he wants or ignore the lasting negative impact of the whole "Slave" nonsense, but the outside world knows better.

V10LETBLUES

I think the key word is influence. MJ definitely owned the 80's in sales and media saturation, but as to musical influence? I think that's the Quincy Jones influence music wise. MJ had a singing style, but music wise it was based on the producers.

The Prince 80's sound is very identifiable and was heard all over the place in the 80's. There were a lot of people copying his sound or at least very influenced by it. Besides direct connections like The Time and Sheila E, Jesse Jonson, Flyte Tyme, Morris, ...there was the Bangles, Chaka Khan, Sheena Easton, Stevie Nicks, Phil Collins, Ready For The World, Cindy Lauper had a cover on the She's So Unusual album, Madonna had him on Like a Prayer.

Prince was not the most popular with the general public or sold the most records, but I would be hard pressed to think of anyone else who so directly influenced artists or the music we listened to in the 80's. Especially in hindsight.

If we're talking about success vs. failure of business ventures (not just career choices), then it's pretty clear what works and what doesn't. Personal opinions are dandy but they don't mean shit. Carly Fiorina is proud of her work at HP? Oh, that's cool, but she drove it into the ground.

Prince never owned any part of the 90's. None of it. He was a joke in the 90's to everyone but 6 people here in the org.

Bowie has never been a joke. He has always been an artist that people respected whether he sold records or not. He was an artist through and through. Prince began to pander and try to hock a cartoonish version of himself as a ploy to make money that didn't work. True artist don't dumb themselves down and exploit themselves without regard to themselves or their fans. That's called prostitution.

Bowie never prostituted himself like that.

Clueless. Firstly check out Bowies back catalogue and then tell us he didn't make the genre of music that was popular at the time. Bowie did tap into popular trends and exploit them in order to be more relevant. There is nothing wrong with this. You need to do your Bowie homework.

I doubt there'd have been Purple Rain without Ziggy Stardust.

Bowie led the way for New Romantics and a whole 80s pop scene.

That doesn't make Bowie better though. There wouldn't be Bowie if it wasn't for Bob Dylan

Best post here. Bowie influenced prince and prince would readily admit this i.m.o.

Because it means Prince is making music only for himself. He'll do the greatest hits shows for a Russian millionair to make the $$€€££¥¥ so that he can keep Paisley Park running and record more songs that he can put in the vault.

They have both done this, so in that regard they're very similar. Bowie deserves the respect he gets as an artist, yes he exploited popular culture but he was also an innovator, much the same as prince.
