Paisley Park (instrumental) (Joy), So Dark (full), and Come (Straight Pass Remix)

I don't know about some new (I think) possible outtakes I just saw-- first, an instrumental supposedly coming from 1982 or so, possibly titled "Joy." Anyone know anything more definite?

Also, there's a So Dark out there clocking at 7:08, with a instrumental jam kicking in after a fade around 5:30. I hope this one's real, because I like it.

And a Come (Straight Remix) at 11:19. Laid back.

I like the Come Straight Pass Remix! Very enpjyable. It sounds like a stripped-back mix of the album version.

So Dark Remix Full verision is about as exciting as the Crystal Ball edit. Not very...

Joy Instrumental I... really don't know. The only thing that sounds Prince about it is the Flesh-like drums.

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

JOY is from 1984 (ATWIAD session times) from what i know but maybe some1 more in the know might confirm or not?

And it seems that the real title of this Instrumental is PAISLEY PARK INSTRUMENTAL>>> (Demo work in progress in 1st stage)

I quite like the Come Remix. It has some of the instrumentation from 18 & Over.

Unsure if its fan-made or real but I remember reading there was a Come EP planned with remixes so this could be from that.

Are they pristine quality sound?!?!?!?

More than other tracks I'm interested in the Come Remix, hoping it is one of the remixes planned for the "Come E.P.".

Have to track them down.

Come shows the DNA of 18 & Over, I find this pretty cool biggrin

I like So Dark as well (God knows why it wasn't this version on CB).

I'm digging the new version of Come, wishing we had a maxi-single/E.P. of all the versions of this track & 18 & Over (as the B-Side). Missed opportunity in my opinion...

The So Dark redo has never hit me like the album version, so more of it doesn't excite me much. That last minute or so is pretty tight, though.

As for Joy/Paisley Park Instrumental... I dunno, not feeling it yet. Just doesn't seem to fit the style and sound of the era to me. Do we have more information on this one (for context)?

Thanks to those that leaked and those that shared!! headbang

Agree on the Come maxi single/EP. Could have been great with the 10,000 Wallpaper version, 18 & Over and other mixes.

.

Also agree on So Dark - always preferred the album version (Dark) but as you say the last minute or so is cool to have.

Joy/Paisley Park Instrumental is really interesting in that it's different from anything I've heard from Prince. I like the combination of live drums and Gay Numan-like synths.

The track that is floating around being called 'Joy' is actually called 'Paisley Park (instrumental). I've written about this for my upcoming book and wanted to post this just in case you are curious (sure you are! lol). Hope this helps clear up some of the mysteries about this track.

- Friday, March 9, 1984*
1) PAISLEY PARK (instrumental) (basic tracks)
Sunset Sound Studio 3
1:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. (Lock-out)
Producer: Prince
Artist: Prince
Engineer: Prince
Assistant Engineer: Peggy McCreary

“You have to be really fast. He doesn’t want to mess around. If you can’t get it right he wants to drop it; he says it’s an omen and it’s not happening. You lose the groove. Five minutes to get a drum sound is pretty unique.”
Peggy McCreary

This was the first time that the phrase “Paisley Park” had appeared in any Prince related document. Although it shares the same name as the song eventually released on his Around The World In A Day album, the similarities stop there. This track is an unrelated instrumental that focuses on a groove created by live drums and bass, accented by some heavily reverbed keyboards sounding like it was influenced by Gary Numan and Tom Tom Club’s 1981 hit ‘Genius Of Love.’ Unfortunately, the production gives it a retro feeling that makes it feel dated. Prince would later revisit and update the beat of this song two years later on ‘Bob George.’ ‘Paisley Park (instrumental)’ also contains multiple reverbed sound effects including children playing in a park, laughter and whistles. Prince would repeat this theme of children playing in a park when he recorded the version of ‘Paisley Park’ that was released on Around The World In A Day as well as in the video.

After taking the previous day off from recording, he requested that his engineer, Peggy set up for a session to start at 1:30 p.m. “Sometimes he'd come in and there would be a mix up on the board and you'd think, ‘OK I'm ready for this’ and he'd tell you to put up some fresh tape because he wanted to record,’ she recalls. ‘So you had to re-patch the board from ‘mix’ to ‘live’ and EQ everything and you had about 20 minutes to tear it all down and set everything back up, and mic it all. And he would be playing the drums and he would say ‘come on Peggy, you’re blowing the groove, you're losing me here.' The pressure was incredible but he got some great stuff.”

The song is basically a synth workout with no solo and sounds as if Prince just wanted to lay down a track to see if it went anywhere. He recorded the drums, bass and keyboards over the next five hours and sound effects (from the Sunset Sound library) were used to help create the mood. Instead of strategically placing them (as they did on ‘Pop Life’ three weeks earlier), they were used as a background bed for the entire ‘Paisley Park’ track. After a quick mix, two C-60 cassettes were made and the brief session was over by 8:30 p.m. No additional information is known about anyone else participating in this session.

Prince would not record again at Sunset Sound until March 17th, so it is assumed that he traveled back to Minneapolis. Any recording that he did while there has not been documented.

STATUS: ‘Paisley Park (instrumental)’ (4:16 with sound effects, 3:44 without sound effects) was briefly considered for placement on The Family album in 1985, but it remains unreleased to this day.

the early 'rock' version (seques with endorphinmachine)
the electronic version ('this is the dawning of a new spiritual revolution')
the 'straight pass' remix

the album version

18 & Over

now, possibly an edit or an instrumental of one of those and there's the Come EP i guess

Yes, that would have been a great maxi-single/EP.

Unlikely but you could also add a live version as well, I love the one at the DNA aftershow.

Man you are a-ma-zing! Thanks so much biggrin How did u even manage to get both versions' lengths?!

Makes me think lots of ur contribution are credited as "from an early draft". If this means u have edited the book to make it more easily read by ommitting certain unimportant or repetitive details, which I could perfectly understand, I think there should be a limited edition "director's cut" with every possible little details for the hardcore fans. I remember Per Nilsen saying that DMSR was edited down from at least double its first draft's length, I'd give a lot of money to read the unedited version nod

By all means, I'll buy it the very day it's released!
