Nice find. Somewhere in the distance and with a bit of imagination, there are some similarities. I hear it too!

Yes, some of Prince's early and mid 80's stuff ( like his look) was influenced by trends that were hitting in the top 40, he has always sort of appropriated pop sounds.

Back then I immediately thought of "freeze frame" when I heard the way the synth organ was used in "Let's Go Crazy". It's also no secret he had aspirations to make a Bob Segar / Journey type epic song with "Purple Rain".

"1999" and "(Keep Feeling)Fascination" were so alike to me back initially in 1983 that I got them mixed up as to who did what. That was quite before my fandom of Prince.

I'm sorry. A co-worker and I noticed it at the same time yesterday for the first time too.

Precisely that element, but also the tempo, rhythm and shouty hook.

Okay, assuming you just don't want to divvy up credit to any writer other than Prince, how about THIS?
