I gather he's trying to say someone who's stuck, Or stuck in time.
Asking them to get up and get out. Expose themselves to a new, different world.

Edit: he should be careful what he ask for or b4 he knows it, he'll have a grizzly sun dog chomping at his heels.

I read it to mean everyone with their cellphones taking pictures of him while he is performing. Meaning, okay enough with the pictures and enjoy the music.

Morris says the same thing in The Walk. I've often wondered...

"I like to watch."

I didn't know polaroid made cell phone cameras.

Or maybe heys saying they're posers?

I don't think it's about people taking pics and vids at concerts tho.

Prince used to say this way back in 1980-83. Made me wonder if Big City is somewhere from that era that was reworked.

I thought he was saying they are flat
& one dimensional
& replicas of real life.
Thought it was kinda playfully insulting. biggrin

He is actually saying "white on the outside, black on the inside." That is why he has said often, "stay in time with the music."

I've always taken it to mean squares - people in the crowd just staring, polarised, not dancing, not "getting wild" so to speak...

There's a Wiki page for why Prince calls people Polaroids?

Never occurred to me to check that!

Isn't he calling them dicks? In red dwarf when kryten turns into a human, he takes a Polaroid of his willy, and then shows another from when he is excited which is the infamous 'double polaroid' and asks if it is normal. Hence, a Polaroid of any kind is a donger.

.

Asuming P calls people polaroids is just that.

First start with the thing he names. The corporation, the brand, the apparatus.

Then check the lyrics.

I can't imagine Prince has ever seen Red Dwarf, though he may enjoy the homage paid to him in by Danny John Jules in his role as Cat.

I don't know what it really means, but polaroids were considered inferior to "proper photographs" back in the day. They were considered disposable, entry-level stuff, quick fun at best. People who didn't really care about quality liked them for the instant gratification factor.

I was pretty young back then but I remember how strong negative connotations even the word "Polaroid" had.

For Prince, the word could describe his concert attendees that aren't really into his stuff, aren't dancing, can't really appreciate the depth of his compositions, etc. Yeah, "squares" would be another word for it.

Lister to red dwarf. That is amazing news! I've seen Craig Charles around mediacity a couple of times. He looks a mess. Guess they're too old for the movie to ever happen.

"We live in a world overrun by tourists
Tourists 89 flowers on their back, inventors of the accu-jack
They look at life through a pocket camera
What? No flash again?
They're all a bunch of double drags
Who teach their kids that love is bad
Half of the staff of their brain is on vacation
Mama, are you listening?"

.

What different is the 'smart'phone thing to photograph all concert long?

This thread is kinda funny.

If you listen to the context of how Prince and Morris say it, they're calling you slow or behind... unable to keep up with them. Polaroids were the shit back in the day, but the picture never developed very quickly. It was quite a slow process that you had to wait for.

If you're being a polaroid to Prince, he simply means you can't keep up with him because he's too fast and you're too slow!

Yes.

English words can be changed or take on several different meanings, including made up defenitions. It depends on race, culture, and what part of America you live in.

It must be a headache to anyone outside of America, trying to learn the English language.
