As much as the groove locks me in on this song, I would admit, though, that the "looking for big fun" line is a bit childishly shit - almost cringeworthy. But when the sax and guitar kick in during the extended version...

Hot Thing. Less of a dated sound.

Hot thing is for musicians? The song is boring as hell musically....a simple drum loop, with a looped snth line. And that little sax part and synth/bass-line, doesnt make ut great! Sorry Just imagine a band covering the studio - version, ha ha, almost the whole band can go for a walk...the song is soo exited for a musician, there is nothing to play...

That synth keyboard riff is slinky and slick as hell. Very sexual. It makes the song for me. I like the snapping snare and the and the cymbal on the one. A lot of funk tracks are simple musically until you start peeling away the layers behind the basic beat and the repetitive rythm. "Flashlight" is a funk classic but built around a very simple bass line and beat. I mean, damn, SOTT (the title track) is hauntingly simple. Do you dislike that one too?

Hot Thing builds after the first couple of measures and then gets absolutely batshit at the end.

And if we're talking cringe worthy lyrics, Christ, U Got the Look takes the fucking cake. I like both songs but Hot Thing has always been one of my favorites on the record, along with SOTT, Housequake, IIWYG and Forever in My Life.

I love "Hot Thing", but I'd drop it. Simply because I think "U Got The Look" offers the SOTT album something it needs. Something about the mix of synths and guitars on it that has a mood I will always associate with the era.

But really, I love "Hot Thing".

Exactly, that's the greatness of the album, it follows the same path musically as the "Family Affair" from Sly and The Family Stone; minimalistic intrumentation.

I know, live, the songs get more energy, but for me that does not mean they are better than the studio versions.

Perhaps, that's the best live version of the setlist, and it is really great. Be that as it may, i prefer the original version.

I do not agree. It's one of his most complex drum patterns. The shaker, the tamborine... And the intertwining with the bass line and the rythm guitar, it's alchemy. It's sparse alright, but... simple ?

Even the bridge keyboards are something, listen to the instrumental that closes SOTT the movie, there's so much going on under the vocal track.

Maybe "sparse" is a better word. You're right but I think you know what I meant. Maybe "deceptively simple" would have been a better description. A lot of funk is like that, especially Prince's best funk.
