It is, in a way, the Black Album of the 90s. It has much the same themes: sex, lust, fetishism, S&M, violence... But The Black Album at least had one love song. There's no love on Come. Only loneliness and despair. It's Prince at his most paranoid. Dark. There is no other word to describe it.

Estoy de acuerdo contigo.

Yep. By far. There are some of his 90's elements that tinge it with a gross film, but it's kept at bay mostly. The title track, Pheromone, Space, Solo, and letitgo are classics, the rest could be swept away under the TGE rug. Actually It would have been great if someone did just that, placed Shy and Eye Hate U into Come, then you have one really solid album in Come, and a gross album in TGE that you could forget ever existed. 1-2-3-4! 1-2-3-4! The album loses a point for that line alone. Come itself is a great track. Space is pretty cool. But overall this was the first Prince album that truly disappointed me. D&P and symbol had some weak tracks, but I enjoyed those albums overall.
I agree.I was kinda disappointed with the Come album. It lacks the power and energy of Love Symbol and TGE (his best albums of the 90s,imo).

I actually really like how Prince hollers the count at the start of "Loose!"--possibly my favorite song on the album. And that's saying something with songs like "Come", "Space", "Pheromone" and "Dark"--all stand-outs IMHO. I dig the whole album from end-to end but I resonate most with the message and raw energy on "Loose!". Maybe it's 'cuz I'm introverted; I get to vicariously wild out when I sing along with Prince on that track, including the rapid-fire count at the start of the track. It's just super fun to do so. cool Gets me good and ready for the music that follows.

COME really sounds amazing for 21 years old.

I agree, Pheremone is excellent. The lyircs are some of his darkest as well.

In the background he is saying "Pheremone make a ni$$a crazy/make a ni$$a crazy/make a ni$$a wanna die"

I read years ago in Controversy mag (I think?) that the background was "pheromone make a ni**a go crazy, fu*kin' make a ni**a wanna die." Anyone remember reading this in Controversy? No matter how hard I listen, I still can't figure out for myself exactly what he's saying.

.

"Pheromone" is such a dark but fascinating song both musically and lyrically. This song is a whole different world compared to his other work in terms of subject matter. Is there a woman's moan cycling like a beat throughout the song? He blends it in pretty seamlessly. Prince is a quite the storyteller and this song is an excellent example. "What happens next, it all depends upon your style."

It is a good album, but not the best of the 90s.

I prefer Gold Experience as the best as it is so solid and has some amazing rock songs (Dolphin, Gold, Endorphinmachine) funk cuts (Billy Jack Bitch, Now, 319), sexy creamy ballads (Eye Hate U - a fucking masterpiece biggrin, Shh!, TMBGITW) and it is head and shoulders above Come.

.

The best bits of Come are Dark, which is another brooding masterpiece, Space, Pheromone, Letitgo. The rest is very average and Papa, Orgasm and Solo are self indulgent throwaways), and to rub salt in the wound, I consider Lovesymbol and Diamonds and Pearls better albums than Come. I know you all may be laughing, but the highlights on this album outstrip all of Come except perhaps Letitgo and Dark. Take Damn U, Cream, Sexy MF, Gett Off, Walk don't walk, Insatiable, 7, 3 Chains of Gold, Money don't matter 2 nite and the Morning papers - all classics.

.

If you count it, I think Crystal Ball is probably better too.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I know most fans strongly dislike Strays of the World but I think it should have been left on the Come album as the last track like it was meant to be. That would´ve been a perfect closing song, especially with that "Come..." invitation at the end of the song.

I like that little gem a lot and of all his boombastic sounding songs, Strays of the World is the one I like the most.

The album just sounds very incomplete when you know that Strays of the World was supposed to be the last song on it.

The one-word song titles were fun first, but turning a whole sentence like "Let it go" into Letitgo was a bit silly.

Cool album though, especially in hindsight.

I agree, Strays of the world would have fitted perfectly as a closing song since I always felt like there's something missing on the album. It's a very good album and definitely one of his best in 90's smile

I was very dissapointed with COME.

IT felt so paint-by-numbers. It wasn't bad, but with Prince, one just expects so much more.

Besides, even Prince didn't particularly care for COME. It was written deliberately to pale in comparison to the Gold Expereince (an album I think is superior to COME, even in it's officially released configuration).

COMe is the first time ever in Prince career that I just didn't like the album. I mean, with D&P I was shocked at how normal it sounded, but it had enoug hsolid tracks on it to keep me liking it. The Symbol album was insane, but had great tracks on it. Graffiti Bridge was meh--but the Prince tracks were good. But, COME was the first time I just didn't play it after the first few listens.

I think it's a gem. There is no other prince album with such a dark-gritty-artsy theme to it and probably something he won't ever go back to, especially performing any of those songs live.

I guess he was going through a Goth-phase at that time.

Neli

I have to admit, after seeing TBE and hearing many of the era's songs live before Come was released, I was disappointed at first with the album. Poor song selection in many cases and also poor choice of mixes (released version of Come vs Ulysses / TBE versions? No comparison...)

Fair to say it has grown on me, but the whole saga of playing the songs live beginning in 93 to the eventual release of Come, and even more delayed release of TGE a year later dampened a lot of enthusiasm for these songs.

You seem to have a grudge against TGE, not on the same level as Violet's against AOA though wink
.
I love Come but I'd still take TGE over it. I agree TGE sounds more dated than Come but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
.
That's mainly down to the synth and sound effect heavy TGE in comparison to the live sparse organic sound with the prominent horns, most notably on Come and Dark, on Come.
.
The only flaw for me really on Come is Loose - seems badly out of place.

Come.

It has a stronger early-90's R&B / new jack swing influence on it, especially on the drum programming. TGE is closer to the "rock heavy with synths" sound of PR, just done with the equipment of its own era. Of course, the horns and the organ stuff on Come is more "timeless", but that's hardly all there is to it as an album. TGE has a lot of reverb on it, which sounded really dated for quite a while, but for some reason has become more hip once again.

It's so short in terms of sequence it's so complete. It reminds me a bit of PARADE in it's sequence...

I feel just overall as an album it's just so solid, even though I feel other albums like D&P, TGE, Love Symbol contains stronger singular tracks overall... However, if it makes any sense, I still feel COME is the better album as a whole.

I completly agree. While I think TGE & Emancipation have a handful of stellar tracks on them (Shhh, Endorphinmachine, Somebody's Somebody), as a cohesive unit, they just aren't as listenable as Come. Come is the only album in Prince's 90s catalog I can listen to from start to finish. Dark and Pheromone are exceptional tracks ... and the video for Pheromone is by far one of the best videos he has ever made!!!

Well put. It also encapsulates his 90's catalog...A lot of great music sometimes lost in the mix with lesser material, production or presentation. He was all over the map and it caused the lazy listener to stereotype this period.

Yep, I pretty much agree with all of this.

Also, the top notch songs on those other albums are key parts of his discography while the same isn't true of Come. Remove the best 4 songs on D&P or symbol from Prince's releases, and there's a gaping hole in his songbook. Remove the best 4 songs from Come, and there's almost no impact on his career overall.

I like the fact that it seems tossed off, dark and bitter. He didn't write it to pale next to Gold, but he did strip it down of more great tracks. Not every album needs to be a Grand Statement.

It has had staying power on my playlist for 20 years and Dark ranks among my favorite Prince songs.

He didn't write it to pale next to Gold, but he did strip it down of more great tracks.

But, he did .
It's well know in the literature covering this period that Prince wanted to release both albums at the same time, with TGE being considered the "superior" of the two albums--that prince "Welcome 2 the Dawn" material shining over the Prince "May U live 2 C the Dawn," material.

Even in his acceptance speeches at the time, he was known to diss the Prince material while touting the symbol material. "Prince, the best? The Gold Experience...better," he stated at an awards show once.

He wrote COME deliberately to be comopared unflatteringly to TGE.

I don't think that's entirely true even though he made those comments. Although he refused to give WB TMBGIW and pulled Endorphinemachine there's still some great songs on Come that he played live at the time.
.
Even The Beautiful Experience tv special featured Come (albeit different version), Pheromone, Loose, Papa and Race so I don't think he thought these were unflattering compared to others. He had a lot of strong material around this time that ended up scattered across a few albums. This was a brilliant era

I'm convinced that Come is just an album that Prince threw together very quickly,to fulfill his contractual obligations to Warners. In 1994,Prince was clearly more focused on TGE..,,a stronger, truly inpired project.

I don't think Prince has ever released something he didn't care about at some point. Of course we know he's quick to move on to the new. My ears don't lie. I find Gold Experience to be dated, flat and overwrought at times...mediocre Prince album. I rarely listen to it.

And sometimes artists are the worst critics of their own stuff. He always did need an editor.
