step back, i'm about to expand "emancipation" to FOUR discs :)

mr.green

yes, you read that right, dear unsuspecting orgers. so, instead of starting the 34675.5th
thread about dwindling it down to 1 disc, let's just go all prince exhuberant multi discs in
the 90's on emancipation's ass and make it four discs. why not. for the heck of it biggrin

That's essentially what my fourth disc of Eman is right there.

Hypnoparadise? That was an Eman outtake?!

it has a lot of those Emanciption-y sounds in it.

for that matter, the version of the Dance that's on the original release of the Chocolate Invasion does too. I always assume they are Emancipation outtakes, no matter what anyone else says.

A 4th disc, great idea. If I use I am The Dj, Feel Good and She Gave Her Angels, I can finally make a fantastic single disc. wink

It should have been just two discs (Disc 2 and a best of the rest).

And I'd argue that the original poster subconsciously thinks this 2, as the number 2 shows up no less than 6 times in that track list.

Interesting all the same.

I vote you re-jig the entire track order of the whole thing and add those tracks in. The album still has to end with the title track and, if possible, all 4 CD's should be 60 mins long exactly. I'd do it but my knowledge of emancipation era outtakes is pretty weak.

Yeah, I recall something like that. Just imagine how interminably boring that would have been. Perhaps it would have included all of Kamasutra?

I'm all for it but it would have to have been released in 1997 or even 1998 because some of those tracks were recorded after release. From memory only the ones I've left in bold above were proper Emancipation outtakes. Also, in the end I find this traclist much weaker than the other 3 CD's, those tracks would have had to have been mixed with the others to make the whole a stronger ensemble, instead of having a weaker 4th CD.

I love Emancipation, if you've played that album on huge speakers with tonnes of bass, well, it's one of his best produced. I know i'll get a lot of flack for saying that but i mean it. Style, Sleep Around, Jam of the Year etc, they just sound so big and bassy. It's a cool stylish album in places. There's also a load of great forgotten cuts like Emale (featuring one of Prince's trademark 90's high pitch synth lines), Holy River, Face Down etc. It's a classic.

the only one i'm certain is an Emancipation outtake from those you mention is "she gave her angels"
as it was reported in at least one interview (was it Q magazine?) at the time, to be on the album. it
came from a reporter whom prince previewed the album for and he mentioned that song by name.
so it was probably on there until pretty late before he took it off. (for inclusion on the album that he
was planning on recording with mayte - 'happy tears' ?)

but now onto the most important bit of your post: this is not a weak disc sir, no it's not no no no!

smile

as the years go by i'm starting to appreciate Emancipation more and more. you're right about it's
big bassy sound. it's very glossy and almost unnatural in places but that's it's appeal for me now.

It was for Happy Tears but you are correct, according to Princevault it's from the Emancipation sessions and may have been considered for that album at some point, I wasn't aware of that thx for clarifying smile

IDK I like those tracks but I find the group would make a weaker CD, but I worship Emancipation and find each disc to be an extremely strong and cohesive ensemble, so I may not be objective smile

nah, you're right. we can all fuck around with alternate tracklists or album ideas
but 99 times out of a 100 prince got it right in the first place. it's his statement,
and tampering with it seems very clever or even brilliant for a day or two, but in
the end i always return to his vision, even if the album in case might not be my
favorite.

Whoa now....let me just "step back" for a second.

I'd add "Jukebox With a Heartbeat" since it's really awesome and fits well into the style of the album.

To me though, the beauty of Emancipation is that it has something for everybody so you can easy trim the fat and get a really great 2 CD set that suits your taste. The ballads on this release are interesting for a change and among his best (Soul Sanctuary, White Mansion, Friend Lover Sister Mother, Dreamin About U, Curious Child) IMO.

This one is from 99-01 and definitely belongs to TCI/TS (formerly High/Peace). It clearly has those sessions' sound.
