Crying woman Purple Rain (right forum this time.)

Looking at the Jill Jones thread just before it occured to me. The backward masked voice that Prince plays for Apollonia in his room in Purple Rain was meant to be the Kid's mother! That makes it weird on so many levels. It sounds like sexual moaning, he is playing it while with seducing Apollonia, he says it makes him sad. And it ties in with the When Doves Cry and the domestic abuse of the movie. The Kid is becoming his dad, and Apollonia is becoming the mother, untill he his dad dies and he listens to wendy and Lisa's song. This ain't no Elvis movie. It is dark. cool

Yup, despite the body outline on the basement floor, the kid, ma, and pops all hug and play happy in the hospital during a montage.

That is a great find...weird but great. It's like The Kid was trying to turn his mother's frown upside down by making her pain sound like pleasure. Weird but kinda deep.

Oops you can tell i've had a busy week. I just plain goofed. Yeah the dad doesn't die, and I think it is wholly intentional that his father lives and he has the chance for redemption that Prince would be having with his dad a few months (year or so?) after this in real life with John L. In the original script his father dies I think and he is gone by Graffiti Bridge time, but the chalk outline I see more as a metaphor and premonition the kid is having. The chalk outline could represent what will happen to Francis L, the mother, the kid at his own hand or even Apollonia if the kid takes it to a whole bleaker level. But yeah Francis L survives and there is a scene I think with him in the hospital being visited by Prince and his mother, so sorry for the misinformation. By the way this thread is just a theory, that just makes sense to me in terms of the film. wink

i once read somewhere that the original script for Purple Rain had some incestuous overtones regarding P and his mom...something about a scene where she gives him that earring, and supposedly kisses him on the lips...cant rememnber where i read it...i think it might have been one of Magnoli or Blinn's interviews

It was supposed to be a continuation of when the Father told her he would die 4 her

(70) INT. PRINCE'S ANTECHAMBER AND BEDROOM -- NIGHT

CU--Clock. We See: 8:15.

PRINCE stares at the door a moment,
tears welling in his eyes. His Mother
is motionless, whimpering softly. A
scent of liquor permeates the air.

He moves toward her, reaches out
tentatively...

Suddenly she jumps up, starts pacing
franticaily--

MOTHER
It's nice here. It's a nice
house. Nothing wrong.

(a beat)
It's a good family. Believe
me, I know. Nothing wrong
here.

(a beat)
Your father is okay. He's a
good man. You could learn
somthing.

She catches a glimpse of herself in the
mirror, stops--

MOTHER
My, my! Don't you think I
have a good figure? Your
Father did.

She sits in front of the mirror, studies
her face, her eyes...her breasts--

MOTHER
I was beautiful when your Dad
met me. I was out-a-sight!

She giggles, starts applying makeup--

MOTHER
I looked just like a movie
star. The minute he saw me
singing, I knew just what he
wanted.

She fixes him with a conspiratorial
look, whispers--

MOTHER
He wanted to get into my
panties.

She makes funny, "jazzy" eyes at him,
then stops suddenly, staring. His face,
mouth, eyes...a sudden stirring in her
loins. Her lips part, she moistens them
unconsciously...

She turns from the mirror and stares at
him -- his look connects with her groin.
She rises suddenly, walks slowly toward
the bed, sits facing him--

MOTHER
You look so pretty. Just like
me, honey. You coulda been a
girl.

She outlines the mole on his cheek with
a makeup pencil, then draws one on
herself. She takes her earring off, and
puts it on his ear. They are face to
face -- identical--

MOTHER
So pretty...

She looks at him drunkenly. He tries to
hold it in, but can't. A tear, hot and
hard as a bullet flows down his cheek.
She puts her index finger in front of
his face, moves it back and forth
hypnotically. Suddenly she pulls her
hand away, stretches it to the ceiling
like an escaping bird. He swallows,
tries to smile -- she leans close --

MOTHER
(secretly)
I have to go now, see some
friends. Don't tell your
father, okay?

She gets up, leaves the room--

MOTHER
Bye, skipper...bye.

If anyone has ever seen the workprint (bootleg) for this film, you'll notice Olga Karlatos has a very thick Italian accent. Despite being an actress, I don't think she could mimic an American accent if her life depended on it. That said, a scene of that calibre would require some serious voice over work and I think Mr. Magnoli made the right move by deleting it. As he stated in the commentary, "the drama was already established". It would be cool to see it though.

Apples: King Kong?!?.
Kid: STOP!
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

You need to rewind it though. It's the Kid and Jill Jones. She's talking about not wanting to do it anymore, whatever that is. And you hear his voice saying something angrily to her. Then she starts to cry.
