Purple Rain movie: would Morris Day have made a better bf for Appollonia?

I read an article on the Purple Rain movie, and someone commented that Morris Day would have made a better boyfriend for Apollonia as he treated her better than the Kid. But of course, the Kid is the star of the movie, so the producers had to make him the girl's boyfriend.

What do you think? Would Morris have made a better boyfriend for Appollonia than the Kid?

You know, some pimps treat you real nice and tell you nice things and buy you things and have more money than the average boyfriend, but in the end, they´re still pimps who want to exploit you. wink

Both Morris and The Kid had issues. Perhaps she should've seen what Dez Dickerson and The Modernaires were talking about. lol

This is definitely my favourite thread title of the year! What's glorious question. Im afraid that whilst The Kid is an uptight asshole who hits women when he's angry, Morris' attitude of 'shove the woman in the dumpster' is also deeply and horribly mysoginistic. Having said that, I'd rather be in the dumpster than thwacked in the face, so Morris would be the lesser of two evils. But if I were Apollonia (a man can dream) I'd go with Billy - runs his own successful business, stylish suede tracksuit, awesome glasses, and a paunch that would give you something to hang onto in the bedroom
PIPS! Eurgh...

I would say no. The Kid was a better bf for her (assuming he lived up to what he sang about in "Purple Rain" about how he mistreated everyone in his life and was striving for redemption .... or whatever). The Kid was an ass, but he loved Apples. Morris didn't even care for her outside of her money-making appeal in the first place.

Purple Rain really was a great film (even with all the assholes) but one thing I wish they did was not make Prince's character's hitting so one-dimensional. What was up with him hitting girls only? It wouldn't have justified his hitting of his girlfriend, but I think if The Kid was shown to erupt in angry outbursts at men such as Morris/Billy/his father (all assholes who made at least one move in the movie that you would think would illicit physical violence from someone like The Kid) more often, it wouldn't have seemed AS mysoginistic and made it more apparent to the audience that he suffered from violence problems because of his violent home life. The fact he hit one person in the movie and that person was a girl makes people lose sympathy, I think. It makes him look just like a douche (which he was, but a psychologically messed up one). Then again, it was made in 1983 when I have a feeling political correctness wasn't as prominent.

Maybe they could have addressed that issue ^ and more if they had more time.. they did write in the script a scene where he fights The Time members. Unfortunately, the budget wasn't that big and I think that's why the film is a little incomplete.

Maybe eye do, just not like eye did before pimp2

I think it's fairly typical for abusers to unleash his frustration on those who he deems weaker than he is, which is often times his partner or children. It's almost his way to gain control in a world where he has none. There are certainly other factors, but I'm sure that's one of them.

In the short term, yes. But Morris became a real dick by the time of GB, so they'd probably break up then anyway.

I didn't find Jill attractive at all in Purple Rain. She probably would've gotten passed up. I would've been kicking myself by the time Graffiti Bridge came around though! biggrin

No and Apollonia had no class and was just a piece of ass for a week.

She ripped off the taxi driver, lies trying to get into the club, runs into Jill and breaks something and doesn't even say 'sorry'.

-

In-between Purple Rain and Graffiti Bridge she moved to Vegas and worked the strip before OD'ing.

Would you rather be bitch slapped and forced to listen to tapes of backwards sex crying or thrown headfirst in to a dumpster on a cold winter street? These are your choices.

Both The Kid & Morris were sexist, thus one reason why neither was a "better" boyfriend for Appollonia.

yeah, when you think about it,Purple Rain is a very sexist movie smile

Women are treated like crap in that film. They are beaten, thrown in trash cans,or simply ignored (Wendy and Lisa).

thats an easy choice...i'd take the bitch-slappery and backwards sexcrying...

dumpsters are a bastion of germs and toxins and broken glass and shitty diapers and disposed feminine toiletries and used syringes...

an occasional smack across the facial features never killed anybody...and the satanic sex-crying audio was kinda cool IMO...it should have been on the Purple Rain soundtrack album as an interlude or segue of some sort

Hell no, especially not the way he had Jerome throw the girl in the trash bin, and obviously just viewed women as sex objects! And the Kid was abusive, slapping the heck out of her, treated Wendy and Lisa like crap, and probably was playing on the side with the Jill Jones character, neither were ideal boyfriends to have.

You know how there's some kind of drum roll when The Kid slaps Appolonia? What if you mashed up the soundtrack to then start this song on the drum roll:

Honestly, Appollonia would have been better off without the Kid or Morris. Minneapolis should've been a pit stop on her way west. She should have just kept it movin'. Too much drama there. lol

LMAO @ the thought of a soaking wet Morris Day riding behind Prince (arms around his waist) on the back of Prince's motorcyle while "Take Me With You" plays
