Unreleased Music from 1985-1986

* Basically stuff that was recorded in this period but not released in that period *

IS

nevaeH ni ecalP A

.

There is so much music from this period, and I want all of it.

I still remember when I first heard Old Friends For Sale late 85 early 86 on the radio as Promo for the movie Under the Cherry Moon. And when it did not appear in 1986(I still had it on a Maxwell Gold tape) I was left with the impression that there might have been a lot more music unreleased like this.

I'm constantly hearing about another unreleased song from this period, just as soon as I get settled into what I do have. What song from this period is a must 2 hear, as far as U R concerned ?

.

Thanks breakdown2k14 4 mentioning the 1986 outtake "God is Everywhere"? I never heard of this one....

.

God Is Everywhere is an unreleased track recorded in mid-July, 1985, at the Crosstown Circle Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA, during recording sessions for Parade. Engineers Susan Rogers and Peggy McCreary mixed the track on 26 September, 1985, while Prince was in France filming Under The Cherry Moon, and sent it to him, as he was considering it for use on Parade. It was not included on any known configuration of the album, however, and the track remains unreleased. The track is a piano-led ballad, with gospel-style vocals by Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman.

Old Friends 4 Sale

Initial tracking took place on 20 April, 1985 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA

Clare Fischer arranged and recorded orchestration for the song at some point in mid-late 1985 at Monterey Sound Studios, Glendale, CA, USA. The lyrics of this original version mention several personal details of changes in Prince's band and his relationships with bandmembers and staff.

The song (without orchestration) was included as the eighth track on a 1 May, 1985 configuration of Parade (and would therefore have been credited to Prince and the Revolution), but was removed before the album's release.

Recording Personnel
  • Prince - all vocals and instruments, except where noted
Orchestral Players:
  • Violins - Isabelle Daskoff, Francine Walsh, Mari Botnik, Pam Gates, Janice Gower, Karen Jones, Betty Moor, Irma Neumann, Assa Drori, Bill Hymanson, Oscar Chasow, Ron Clark, Henry Ferber, Erne Granat, Ed Green, Bill Hybel, Reggie Hill, Pat Johnson, Don Palmer, Sheldon Sanov, Joe Schonbrun, Terry Schonbrun and Harold Wolf.
  • Violas - Pam Goldsmith, Margot Maclaine, Carol Mukagawa, Myer Bello, Alan Deverich, Norman Forrest, Alan Harshman, Jorge Moraga and David Stock.

Old Friends 4 Sale

The sun set in the west this mornin'
4 I know, I know L.A. is callin'
Bad news, Steve said, and people are talkin'
They say your kingdom is fallin', yeah
They say U lost your fire
When another musician U hired
Little do they know, U wouldn't have passed go
Unless they could take U higher, yeah

The sun set in my heart this afternoon
4 2 friends of mine got stuck in the snow
In Uptown when winter's alarmin', oh
Cocaine becomes charmin'
But U talk about things U don't know 'bout
I know, no matter how pleasant your past was
Green and white return 2 blue
U're happy as long as your last buzz
And then U think U want something new, yeah

The sun, the sun set in my mind this evening
4 someone who said they would die 4 me
Sold some, they sold some more pictures and all my little memories
Chump change is 2 unravel the mystery, ah ha
But life is no fun, life ain't no fun without fantasy
Some things are better left unsaid
And some people are better left untrusted
Maybe, maybe, maybe it'll all make sense when I'm dead
When I'm dead

Old friends 4 sale
Get'em while the gettin' is hot
Watch out, they'll kiss U until they get what U got
And they'll show U the friends that they're not
Old friends 4 sale

Old Friends 4 Sale
This slow bluesy classic is one of Prince's most autobiographical songs in which he sings about Steve Fargnoli, Wendy Melvoin, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and the late bodyguard Chick Huntsberry. A somber mood is established from an eerie slightly discordant synth with a piano the main accompaniment. Recorded during the Parade sessions, two versions exist, with one including Clare Fischer's orchestra. It was revised in 1991.

The song "Old Friends 4 Sale" was written in 1985
and was featured in Prince's movie "Under The Cherry Moon" but not included on the soundtrack "Parade".

Old Friends 4 Sale can b heard when christopher comes home 2 a drunk tricky
The original song contained lyrics with veiled references about the firing of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis of The Time
and "Big" Chick Huntsberry, his former bodyguard,
who supposedly sold a fictious story about Prince to a tabloid to support his cocaine habit.

Prince Talks Interview April 1985

Prince is fiddling with the tape deck inside the T-Bird.
On low volume comes his unreleased "Old Friends 4 Sale,"
an arrow-to-the-heart rock ballad about trust and loss.
Unlike "Positively 4th Street" -- which Bob Dylan reputedly named after a nearby Minneapolis block --
the lyrics are sad, not bitter. "I don't know too much about Dylan," says Prince, "but I respect him a lot. 'All Along the Watchtower' is my favorite of his. I heard it first from Jimi Hendrix."
"Old Friends 4 Sale" ends,
and on comes "Strange Relationships," and as-yet-unreleased dance tune.
"Is it too much?" asks Prince about playing his own songs in his own car.
"Not long ago I was driving around L.A. with [a well-known rock star], and all he did was play his own stuff over and over. If it gets too much, just tell me."

An ignition turns. "Wait," calls Prince, remembering something. He grabs a tape off the T-Bird seat and yells to his father, "I got something for you to listen to. Lisa [Coleman] and Wendy [Melvoin] have been working on these in L.A." Prince throws the tape, which the two female members of his band have mixed, and his father catches it with one hand. Nelson nods okay and pulls his car behind his son's in the alley. Closely tailing Prince through North Minneapolis, he waves and smiles whenever we look back. It's impossible to believe that the gun-toting geezer in Purple Rain was modeled after John Nelson.

I want it too

Elektra is a name/term heard a few times in Prince music

in the Ladder, one other place in the 1985-1988 yrs I believe and of course Carmen Electra

Now this king he had a subject named elektra
Who loved him with a passion, uncontested
4 Him each day she had a smile
But it didn't matter
The king was looking 4 the ladder

Prince Vault will have a sizeable list, it seems that 1986 was a creative peak for him, so many fantastic songs were recorded that year and even used on later albums, many (and some mind blowing ones) remain unreleased.

She Pony ~ 1985

is an unreleased track recorded in December, 1985, at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (while Prince completed work on the Parade album). Nothing else is known about the track, but engineer Susan Rogers has described it as an unfinished track. The song remains unreleased.

.

I wonder is this or Zebra With the Blond Hair(1985) was

Palamino Pleasure Ride that Prince said he and the band were

working on? He said it to Swanson the actress who handed Prince his white cloud guitar

in the Raspberry Beret video

Dear Jackie,

Are u well, today? I hope so.

I am in Minnesota rehearsing 4 a World tour.

I made a song about u and I sing it before every Tuesday's rehearsal.

It's a cutie little ditty entitled "Palamino Pleasure Ride"

Please send me pictures of u, I miss your smile.

I am very happy now and hope u are 2

Love God.

Go is an unreleased track recorded in early August, 1985, at the Crosstown Circle Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA, with only Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman.

Prince worked on the track further in late October, 1985, when bandmembers arrived in France for the America video shoot, although it was worked on in rehearsal, rather than in the studio...

Engineer Susan Rogers noted that Prince put a lot of time and effort into the track, and must have been seriously considering it for release, although it was not included on any known configuration of Parade or any other project.

This instrumental was recorded live with The Revolution at a soundcheck in Paris on August 25th 1986 but was premiered the night before at Le New Morning club and, incidentally, is not a blues number.
