the big important question

I've been reading a lot of the posts and things this past week about Prince .
I've never seen so much hate in my life.
If you don't like him,if you want to laugh at him,if you want to ridicule him then why are you on a site built for those that love him?
Why are you here?

Because I liked the last album (AOA) and might like the next one. Also, because I like everything he released during his classic era and many songs he's released since then. Moreover, because I collect lots of bootlegs and like to discuss them with other fans.

The real question is: Why can't you handle criticism of Prince?

^Now that's the perfect answer. We're all here because we love Prince, but we don't worship him like a god. You don't love someone because (s)he is so great, you love someone in spite of their mistakes.

And I often find myself on the other side of the coin, like defending Rave Un2 when everyone else hates it.

It's just a website for hosers who like Prince to talk to other hosers who like Prince. Who gives a fuck?

I think if Prince had treated his fans better over the years, there wouldn't be so much negativity towards him. I myself feel that I LOVE his music, his image, all of that but him as a person ------ not so much.

So are we obligated to be 'nice' with out criticisms?

When someone does the same basic mess over and over, nice drops out of the equation. Also...expecting civility from all or even most of the population is futile. Eventually, u will, at some point, he assimilated into participating in said behavior...in someone's eyes.

I guess I expect more out of adults ,you know like acting like adults.
There is a way to get your point across and even not be nice by not sounding like a 10th grader.
For example:
I tend to not lower myself to the standards of most of the people who insist on being cruel and rude with their remarks. But unlike those people I'm not just a basic comformist human being who can't tell the difference between a critique and and a basic rude remark.

;-)

Because I have every damn right to be here. Just like the orgers that belittle and ridicule other people for being critical of Prince’s current output.

MOMMMMM, I told you NOT to post on my websites anymore. Now scat! Seriously though, how can you tell "hate" from snark on a non-verbal website? Who are you to scold complete strangers into doing your bidding? Perhaps you should head over to the John Denver or Kenny G site if you can't handle the energy here. Buuuh Bye!

Hold on guys, let's not go fryingpan on Khemseraph, okay? He raises a good point. There's a difference between being critical and saying,"this album is horse shit!" I like ArtOfficialAge, PlecElec is okay and I can't say anything about HitNRun because I haveen't heared it yet.

I like the fact that the range of opinions on Prince the person and his music are widely varied in the fan community - all the way from the absolute devout - for whom everything Prince touches turns to gold, all the way through to those who have felt bitterly betrayed - for whom Prince hasn't done anything right since he ditched the Revolution. I love reading and learning from all the different opinions. Sometimes even those who "sound like 10th graders" actually have a point.

The reality is that most of us sit somewhere in between. The problem with forums such as these is that it's the views on the extreme ends that tend to be posted more - e.g. it's more likely one is going to post if one really, really loves or hates something, because one feels a sense of duty to spread the message. So what you typically find on sites like this are the more polarising views being more representative than how they really stand in the wider community.

I would hate to have a prince.org where only one side of things was heard. That's what the old npgmc forums were like, and it was kind of creepy. This site was not made "for those that love him", but for all sorts - for those with just a casual interest, right through to those who follow his daily moves. And for those who love him, right through to those who think he's a dick and his music stinks.

If you don't like people criticising Prince and his music, if you don't think their criticisms are fair, then so be it. Take a leaf out of your own book - ignore and move on.

.

To answer your question, I'm here because I think he's one of the best musicians that ever graced this planet even if at times I was bored, unimpressed and appalled.

This is something about sheer talent that is like the monolith in 2001:ASO. I feel the same about Ingmar Bergman, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin -- so many others. Now Ingmar, Buster and Charlie did not always make something that was better than anyone else at all times. They had minor works and major works. Being appreciative of talent, I respect it even though many times I was underwelhmed. Speaking of 2001:ASO, that is another case --Kubrick -- I guess I like obsessive creative types and Prince fits.

There are hundreds if not thousands of other artists I admire that are possibly and certainly better than those, that I don't feel they reach into me as much as this group overall. So that's that.

There's a French proverb : qui aime bien châtie bien that is like the definition of tough love and that is what some people here think they have and I guess it's perfectly logical, but I wouldn't want to be in a room with Ingmar, Buster and Charile, telling them exactly what I thought of some of their movies.

its ok to be critical of, or laugh at someone you love... my wife and i laugh at each other and at times are critical of each other...its human nature, not "hate"...no explanation necessary... ive loved Prince's music since My Love Is Forever (1978), but im not obligated by that love and respect for his music and him, to always cosign and give glowing reviews of everything he does or says

I agree with this.I think alot of the negativity is simply because of all the B.S. that Prince puts his fans through (for example....the announcement of the Purple Rain remaster and no news since). They say that every artist gets the fanbase they deserve, lol.

That's pretty much like giving HitnRun 10 stars.

Didn't we moan for a month about no cd even though he said one was coming, the Org found a way to make this a huge issue with several threads of people getting all kinds of blue in the face.

The Org's like having a cranky friend recovering from a nervous breakdown, easily gets agitated.
