I just picked this up on CD proper and the sound quality makes a difference. Maybe some headphones will help it. I'm starting to reallly dig "1,000 Xs and Os" and even "This Could be Us". There's just no FIRE here.

Prince seems like a washed up boxer still trying to figure out how to recapture the glory. SOmewhere along the way, he gpt more interested in being PRINCE than he did with making reallly challenging music. The disc isn't shit, but someone should lock him in a basement and see if there's another 1999 in him somewhere.

The HUNGER is missing now since he's already rich and famous, been there and done that. I know he has it in him but there's really no motivation for him anymore and it shows. I can STILL listen to 1999 and hear new sounds and layers.

OK - I'm a lifelong Prince fan here. Since the 80's. He's the soundtrack to my life. I've been critical of his output in recent years. With the exception of 3121 and AOA think he's been spinning his wheels.

but I say...

HITnRUN is GREAT!!

It's not as solid as ArtOfficialAge - which I consider his best, most exciting album in years and the album I put on fastest now - it was the sound of Prince's sound expanding again - Futuristic Prince - thanks to Joshua.

I read a LOT of bad reviews for HNR here at the org, and I didn't particularly like the advance singles, so I thought "uh oh". But the glowing reviews in major media outlets had me curious.

So I listened....

I love the album. I can't say it's a "great" album like Purple Rain is great. But it's HIGHLY listenable. Here are my thoughts:

1. This album is meant to be heard all at once. Forget the individual songs, this is a 37 minute adventure in sound, funk, and fun. Put it on, relax and enjoy the trip. The strongest "Song" for me is 1000 Hugs. Everything else is just a part of the aural adventure.

2. To the critics who say it sounds like a Beyonce album - pfff - Prince has used female vocalists and rappers of ALL kinds for decades. The vocalists on this album complement his style, perform extremely well, and don't stand out in a bad way.

3. It's EXCITING. It's a thrill ride. Prince is adventurous again.

4. He's weird again.

5. There's not one "Do Me Baby" or "Scandalous" Prince by-the-numbers slow jam which is a GOOD thing. His recent ballads have been unusual, beautiful, different, hypnotic. YES.

6. Some have dismissed this as a "remix" album. Ah - no. There's a LOT of inventiveness here - and a thoughtful cadence between the songs. And really solid vocals, grooves, and musicianship throughout. Granted, I could've lived without another version of This Could B Us and Fall in Love, but within the scope and sound of this album, they WORK as part of the whole.

For me, this album is among my favorite "small gem" Prince albums: like Chaos and Disorder and New Power Soul. Yes I know many of you HATE those albums. But see, I found myself loving those tracks in spite of myself. That's what's great about being a Prince fan.

To my ears, his worst albums of the past 15 years are "Musicology" and "Planet Earth" - why? Because we'd heard it all before only MUCH better. The songs weren't that great and he was repeating himself. One could argue the songs here aren't that memorable either, but like AOA, they flow and segue together beautifully as an exciting listening experience.

I LOVE Prince's use of keyboards and synths. Joshua is revitalizing Prince. Kudos to Prince for loosening his ego and letting this young man help him make great music!

Bravo, agree 100%, and I have been a diehard fan since Day 1 with Soft and Wet. You are on point!

If you've got funk, you've got style.

The sound/playing instruments that made Prince be Prince, is here on this album somehow used as imbellishments to crappy produced songs.

...

When Prince plays the bass (he's an awesome base player!), he does it here in a way like it is part of a short solo or imbellishment - too bad. Missed oportunity.

He could play base fot 10 minutes and it wouldn't bore a fan AT ALL.

...

His guitar licks and playing show that his songs are two-chord jams, rather than thouroughly composed songs. Too much wooshes useless telephone voices and all this shit on repeat. I don't call that contemporary music, but 'trying to sound like a 24 yo while being a nearly 60 yo...

...

Real guitar solos are poor, thin, too little, and too much treated by the production mill of JW (josh welton or jehova shitness if you like. wink.

...

Prince isn't Prince anymore. But that's the way he works for already a very loooooong time. Fucking up things and so wanting to belong to the contemporary scene and be part of the gang now.

...

"Mr Nelson" is an absolute utter wrong misuse of what he did with it before. Shame !

...

Some songs (Like a Mack) are not even Prince songs.

"The X's Face" is 1995-1998 Prince trying to be prince

...

Only "June" is worth a listen or two. Sounds like a sincere man trying to cope with things.

Here we hear a glimpse of what might be a real Prince with a good and normal heart.

This for once doesn't sound fake (the way he sings it). But it's not enough.

This song askes for something like a long painful guitar solo (acoustic or electric), or some frustrated raw guitar rape.

Even strings wouldn't be a bad idea.

I think late Clare Fisher would have done a great work on this little gem.

...

I'm affraid "fase two" isn't going to be any better.

...

And gees i hope there will be no second 3rdEyeGirl project.

...

I heard the live show from Detroit (this year) on bootleg.

And that's about it. I 'heard' it once.

I'm not going to pay and see him live. He's too much on automatic pilot.

And the spirit's totally gone gone gone...

Man, this. The actual songwriting has been missing for quite some time now. AOA was a nice sort of diversion and held together as a cohesive whole for a change but I miss the days when Prince could simply write a very, basic, simple song and THEN decorate it with loops and subtle sound effects with ever expanding layers that embellished it. Stuff like "Forever in my Life", "All the Critics Love U" and "D.M.S.R." - even "When Doves Cry" - are very very simple structually. "The Word" is a also good example of what I'm talking about, where the song writing comes first and the embellishments are secondary.

I've said it before, but somewhere along the line, Prince became more interested in being Prince then he did with writing good songs. It feels like it's all about the image, being cool and making money now instead of just dropping good tracks. He can still do it but he seems to care less and less about it as he ages.

I've been listening to the double CD Lousiville show lately and am shocked at how much of it is piped in and pre-recorded. Whatever happened to "real music by real musicians"? I don't mind the electronic sound or even the production but none of that means shit if there's no real songs there.

I gave the album a 4/10 rating in the other thread.

Highlights: Hardrocklover, June, 1000 X's & O's

Lowlights: Ain't About 2 Stop, Like A Mack, Shut This Down, X's Face

The only time this album really gets good is when Prince is singing (I'm sick of the proteges, guest singers, and rappers), or picks up the guitar or bass. While I don't think Josh did a terrible job for a newbie, he obviously has no idea what made Prince's music great in the first place. I highly doubt he was a Prince fan before Prince came calling for Hannah. I think Josh would be better suited producing for generic R&B/pop/EDM artists, not Prince. While the Weltons seem like nice people, and I wish them well, I'm looking forward to the day when the Weltons and Prince go their separate ways. I was never one to believe that Prince needed an outside producer to actually make music for him, but rather an honest voice in Paisley Park to enact some quality control, and tell him what sucks and what doesn't. There's still gems to be found, but it's difficult to be an objective judge of your own art. JMO.

First impressions...over produced. Never thought i would say that about prince.

That "tape slowing down" plugin must have been the first on the list when josh right clicked on the wav file, pressed 'process' and there you go....instant fx.

Yes its a change from the casio keyboard presets prince used but its gone too far the other way. sounds like a sound engineer graduate showing off his plugin collection.

The lack of real instruments and space in the music is also a bit disappointing. I thought prince was well aware of the nuances and impact this brings, having had years of experience. It looks like he has given a lot of the soundscape creativity to josh.

The songs range from good, ok to boring. Im a bit bothered there may be no depth or grooves to save it from repeated listening, but will give it a chance to grow. Prince seems to chase other's sound rather than show us his sound. Sick of the admittedly laborious mouse-clicking nature of high editing in the production process maybe.

After listening to 8 of 11 songs (on my way to work, to the last songs i will listen on my way home) i am delighted with the result. It makes my smile. THANK YOU Prince. Keep on going.

Its a fresh, experimental album. I will give it 9 out of 10.

It is far better than plectrum or Art Official Age or 20TEN. And i like AOA very much.

I only have to grumble about two points.

The duration is very short. And where is the vinyl?

But that is grumble on a high level.

I need a tour in Germany...

Have you never heard of FUNK & Wagnalls?

lol

Seriously, tho. Lyrics could be simple & fun & still have some thought behind them.
DMSR, Erotic City, Housequake all have lyrics far superior to 'If u're not a Rita-Bot u're a blood clot.'

Most of the lyrics on this album sound like an embarrassing drunk uncle trying to freestyle.

You're probably right, but I think most albums have a couple bright spots. This is maybe the most terrible lyrics in back to back sequence of any Prince album.

June is okay, but it doesn't seem finished, 1000 X's & O's is okay but he wrote it 20 years ago, This Could B Us is pretty good but it's buried to the point I don't notice.

Just wall to wall badness & not the cool kind.

I so agree that Prince has far removed himself from his edge when writing lyrics. It's like... forget the fact they are pointless... I will take pointless as long as they are cool.... but these aren't even cool.
