What has dude been smoking ?! He sounds like Prince owes him something, WTF.

Besides, i truly think he overestimates his own celebrity status.

He really has become kind of an attention whore lately it seems.

Also that hashtag is quite disrespectful.

[Edited 9/7/15 13:56pm]

He's nowhere near the attention whore Prince is.

be fair - he's nowhere near the artist prince is.

Let's all be honest people. I am not dogging Prince at all. But isn't Jesse playing with D'Angelo? We know Prince isn't gonna support anything with his "dogs" No revolution, No Time , No family or anything.

All of which actually says more about Prince than it does about them, honestly. And what it says isn't good. Regardless to what lies Prince has convinced himself and the Famz® giggle of, he didn't get to be who he is ALL BY HIMSELF and that's become more and more apparent over the last several years. He can keep his high and mighty ass up on his shoulders, all he wants to but time and history are going to tell the truth, one way or another. shrug

Well few people care about D'Angelo's back catalogue so playing a full set of new music isn't actually a problem for people who go to see him.

Valid points but at least D'Angelo seems like a current artist. People are actually into his new music and want to hear it played live. I saw him twice this year and was really blown away, especially early on in the tour when he was playing longer sets. At least soneone is out there playing the funk and wowing crowds. Personally I love Black Messiah and unfortunately think that Prince has not put out anything great since the 90s. I do like a song here and there but overall a lot of mediocrity. His 3 albums this year are all weak (AOA) to embarrassing (PE & HNR). I really wish that Prince would move on from Josh and the girls and play with some great musicians again like John, Rhonda etc. That being said this whole thing about Prince not showing up seems silly. Questlove is not even in The Vanguard so I really don't get why he cares.

We can agree to disagree. I like not love D. I would literally take any prince album over any D album. prince's range on any particular album is 100 miles wide D is 2 miles wide. Prince can be funny, spritual, sexy, corny, crazy refernce the modern and the past and interwine genres to extent that is sheer genuis. D on the other hand struggles to even produce music.

I wish Questlove would get over himself and quit thinking that everything D'angelo and Questlove does Prince has to come and watch like a proud father watching his sons playing little league. These two really don't know how they come across when they express their fandom like this. They make it seem like when Prince dies that will live in Paisley Park to carry on Prince's legacy. I couldn't imagine Prince telling Stevie Wonder :I'm disappointed you didn't come to my gig at Paisley Park-I'm the only who gives a damn about your place in music". SMH

[Edited 9/7/15 0:21am]

Could the fact that Okayplayer have not voiced and opinion about HNR and tracks have something do with this? They just mention HNR in passing in relation to the Purple pick of the week. That is odd. Having said that, Prince should have seen D live. Maybe he did, he should know the backdoor way into First Avenue smile

The mutual dissing between Prince and D´Angelo´s camp is pretty ridiculous. I like both artists a lot and I know that people from both camps have mutual respect for each other ( but I´m not talking about Prince himself....don´t know how he feels about D these days). Prince dissed D pretty hard in the video for Daisy Chain back in the late 90s, and Questlove made a really dumb remark about Prince forgetting the bridge for Ballad Of Dorothy Parker and how D and him had to help Prince out during an aftershow, and Prince dissed them back when he invited them to Paisley when D´Angelo played in Minneapolis more than a decade ago.

-.

And also keep in mind that Alan Leeds and Jesse Johnson are part of D´Angelo´s entourage, which is a great thing, but probably not so great for Prince after those two voiced their honest opinions about Prince numerous times in the past.

I have seen D´Angelo´s show both times when he was here (2001 and 2015), and they were both great.

The last time I saw Prince was that legendary, disastrous Cologne show a few years ago.

.

D'Angelo was on Tavis Smiley's show recently and he had nothing but admiration for Prince. I caught the tail end of Part 1 of the interview (forgot to watch Part 2). He mentioned Prince several times and, of course, said Prince was one of his influences.

Regarding Alan, I thought I read in the concert section that Alan played over the weekend at the Paisley Park event. Didn't really care about it so I glossed over the thread.

Yes, they were invited to Castle Dracula 2 perform. Not a peep frm P tho, only Liv's performance that nite got recognized.
Paul & Eric(& others) have been gracious.

I know that he has nothing but respect and admiration for Prince. Still, there have been times when him and Questlove said some not so flattering things about him years ago. No malicious intent and I´m sure they both didn´t mean to say anything negative but they mentioned how Prince forgot how to play the bridge in Ballad of Dorothy Parker during an aftershow and how they kind of had to help him a bit. I think this was in Vibe magazine around the time Voodoo came out.

-

Later, Prince invited them to jam at Paisley Park with him, and they were really looking forward to play with him but instead of playing some songs they knew Prince played a bunch of newer material which made them look a bit silly. Also keep in mind that Prince dissed D a little bit in the video for Daisy Chain. Or that he sang a duet (U Make My Sun Shine) with D´s ex. Or that snarky little remark about D´Angelo not being among his influences on TIDAL. Of course he´s not an influence, but why did he feel the need to mention D´s name in an interview that way?

Nothing major, just little things.

I know they respect and like each other, and I know I will always like both artists....but differently.

-

And.....I´m 100% sure that ALAN never played anything at all....you´re confusing him with Eric, his younger brother. Mr.Alan Leeds is Prince´s former and D´Angelo´s current tour manager, and his brother Eric Leeds is, well, you know , the one and only Mr.Eric Leeds. wink

I didn't know the background story. Definitely sounds like a bit of rivalry and shade being thrown. And them mentioning that Prince forgot how to play the bridge to one of his own songs. Blasphemous! No way is Prince's huge ego gonna let that go without a payback. Thanks for clearing up for me which one of the Leeds played over the weekend.

Lol, I agree. I think most including Prince's former camp like Alan,Jessie, Jam&Lewis as well as Prince himself know D'angelo vocally is probably the best Prince influenced artist he wished he had produce. Prince is very much into D' . I thought that Untitled sound alike song he did with Angie Stone though tackie was proof.

I'm surprised that ?uest was upset---If Prince was there, he would've created a big buzz in that crowd---thus, taking the attention away from the show and D'Angelo..

...and if he did not join them on stage, it would've made some people more angry (if he was there).

As a boy, I attented a concert in which Jermaine Jackson closed, and there was a strong buzz about Michael and other Jacksons being around --to jump-on stage with him before his set was over. When that did not happen, some folks walking by us were angry. People were claiming that several black limos arrived with some Jacksons inside..

Not that big of a deal. People need to enjoy their families..
