Vannormal

New album = all 2 chord (poor) songs,

no interesting structures,

no interesting bridges,

no interesting lyrics...

it's a picture of a man, taking no part in everyday society, living in his own closed shell.

Lot's of wind, wooshes, telephone voices = poor teen production.

Poor drum programming.

Poor guitar playing.

Like someone old trying to be terribly relevant.

Prince, how dare you use your good old snippets as an intro to... this ? A Million Dollar (poor) Show ?

The réuse of used, released songs; Clouds... This could be us, FallInLove...

And that little promise "Stare", isn't even on this...

Everything sounds like a thin copy of privious thin copies.

It's a sad release.

Listened again today, still liking it!!

Some more thoughts:

It just flows real nice, doesn't it? That's the only thing that keeps me from going: where are my extended versions?! The only thing that bothers me (with the editing) is that moment where X'S FACE goes into HARDROCKLOVER.

About the mix/mastering... it's too much in the low end isn't it. The previous versions of X'S FACE and FALLINLOVE2NITE (for instance) don't sound that way, do they? It might also be the capture (yes I'm not on TIDAL), so guess it may sound different on CD. Or vinyl... please give me the vinyl!

I can't believe how much I love MR. NELSON/ 1000 X'S & O'S / JUNE... that's an awesome ending to this hit n run, mixtape-y album. JUNE, is he talking about his birthday here? That's interesting...

Now's the time to promote it. I want to share something on Facebook! Come on, where's the sexy 1000 X'S video, or a weird SHUT THIS DOWN video. Great potential imo.

And to add... Prince is just crazy. That can be so much fun cool

Rebeljuice

Well, what can I say? Downloaded the album and went into listening to it without much hope of it being any good. So is it? Yes and no.

The first four tracks are good. I like them. They flow well together and whilst there is nothing deep and meaningful about them, I like how Prince a) allowed guest singers to shine and not bury them deep in the mix and b) has made four uptempo songs in a row without breaking the pace with a shitty ballad in the 3rd spot. The songs are throwaway but they are an expansion on the sound of AOA with an injection of much needed tempo that AOA lacked. Basically, those 4 songs pretty much hit the brief I was hoping for after AOA. Im really liking Shut This Down. Harks back to 90s Prince with some Josh sprinkles to bring it up to date a little. This sound I like. The opener is pretty catchy and the Mack song, once it gets going, is nice n catchy too.

Then things take a turn for the worst. Its as if a really good idea was allowed to take off but then ran out of steam and so some filler was needed. But what filler can I find to fit in? I hear Josh asking. Well, lets remix TCBU because it will be easy and I have a guitar solo lying around that we can put on at the end. Prince definately replied. Ok, good. Now what? Joshua certainly asked. Well, FallInLove2Night has an alternate version kicking around where I sing everything. Lets add that pile of stinking sewage on the album too. Prince factually responded. I know Rebeljuice would rather dip his balls in acid, but KCool and the gang will hail it as the next great masterpeice. He absolutely continued. Ok done. Joshua really replied.

Even though this conversation is factual and acurate, it is still perplexing. It sucks the life out of the universe and puts the brakes on everything this album started out to be. At the end of the day, he could have added new lyrics to the TCBU remix music track and created a brand new song for very little effort. That would have managed to keep the album flowing. Because musically I like it, but why oh why oh why present it as a remix to a song that hasnt been out for a year yet? Its an insult to the very fine original. And then there is FIL2N which is the polar opposite of brilliance. I vowed never to listen to this song again but was conned into it because it had the audacity to appear on an album. I would rather believe the world is flat than ever hear this monstrosity again. Awful awful song.

The album somewhat redeems itself a little after. X's Face is quite good. I liked it when I heard the snippet played by Josh during the Lovesex thats my jam party last year, and remember thinking it really should have been on AOA. Then BCW can be put in the same incinerator as FIL2N. So this is a good song that has unfortunately had its impact reduced by the preceding 7 minutes of bollocks-in-acid.

Then another 1-2 punch of mediocrity falls upon my already sore ears. HRL was dull when I first heard it and I still cant make that dullness dissipate now that it is on an album. It just doesnt work for me. Its pedestrian and silly even though it is posing as something more mature and considered. And then a WTF moment. Why on earth is the extended portion of Clouds tacked onto this album. It would have been great on AOA if Clouds extended into this Mr Nelson "song". It would have added some much needed tempo to that album and would have made sense (and improved upon the already great Clouds). Putting it on this album is just confusing and pointless. The song should be called Mr Pointless.

By now Im am wondering what on earth I am listening to. Was this really the intended outcome of this album or was time against them and they had to scramble to get it finished so that Mr Z could get his exclusive in time? 1000 hugs is a nice song. The album needed a nice song to break up the pace a bit. But it should have come earlier, and not follow the abomination that has just been playing for the last 12 minutes or so. I like the song and can feel it is a grower too. And then there is June. Well, I dunno. By the time this song gets going I have already considered the album finished and dont feel much need to listen to this song to its conclusion. Its not a bad song, but by the time it comes on the pace has already been slowed with 1000 hugs, and this one now just makes me want to go to sleep or go back to the first 4 tracks and bring some energy back into the room. Actually, scrap that, it makes me want to listen to AOA and the much more superior WBH.

So all in all, a half decent album coupled with a dogs dinner. Take out TCBU, FIL2N, HRL, MR N and June and we have a great EP. However, if Prince had spent more time on the album and replaced those songs with better songs and allowed some of the remaining songs to groove on a bit longer, we may have had a great album on our hands. Having said that, it now allows me to combine the best of AOA and HNR to make an absolute killer album with the perfect vibe and tempo. So for that I am thankful.

I've only listened to this twice so far, but my initial impression is that it's not really a Prince album. It's a Joshua album featuring Prince (among others). It's insipid, plastic pop and awful. It is, however, better than AoA.

Generic, are you sure? I haven't heard the album yet. So Prince doesn't bring anything to the table which sets it apart? Or do you judge Joshua's part separately from the end result?

I don't jude the part of Joshua. I actually think that it's not such a bad move from Prince's part, to use a partner in production. I also don't say Prince don't bring anything to the table. I'm talking about the sound of the album. The RnB 'hé's' and 'ho's' the slow down effects. The electronic 'Dubstep' sounds. It's what we hear in the charts everywhere.

And...i like it!

it's something different.....for Prince.

But i would have liked it from any other artist.

I'm not trying to judge or diss (i'm staying far away from that), just my humble opinion about the sound of the album.

Only thing is.....because of the sound. It doesn't match with prince's view on today's generic artists. He's now part of THAT sound.

As for the songs.....most are just fine as well.

1)
Not at all. It means to interact with the pulse of time and play with its forms of expressions. This album is far from safe because people don't get their usual Prince bag.

2)
In the context of Prince's albums, this is edgy and everything but safe. How do you explain the negative feedback expressed in this thread? On HNR he obviously doesn't try to appeal to everybody.

The only tracks which are listenable are hardrocklover, 1000 xs & os and june. The rest is as poor as anything prince has put out if not worse. A 60 yo man trying 2 sound 20 is quite embarrassing. We are prince fans 4 a reason, because his type of music speaks 2 us. This album is just josh pressing every preset u can think of, and what makes it worse most of the songs have the same generic effect. 3/10 on a good day.

Weakest and strongest track anybody?
For me:
Weakest track: Mr. Nelson
Strongest track: HardRockLover (yep. But I haven't listened to it much 'cause to me since it's release it's already burnt out). So besides this song, 1,000 X's & O's is the strongest.

I need to try to find the original 1,000 Hugs and Kisses. I usually go to a certain website for that kind of stuff. But it seems there has been a whistleblower. Either that or Prince and/or his team of copyright minions found out about it

Agree 100%. I'm not immediately liking this album. Hopefully when Phase Two is released between them both we'll have a great album. Similar to the Lotusflower/MPLSound situation. I think the remixes are pointless & take up valuable space. I will still buy copies of the physical release however!

On first listen, the album was a little bland. However, after 5 or so spins, the album has grown on me with June being my favorite and 1000 X's and O's being way better than the original outtake. It's not his best and surely not his worst. Expected a little more but not bad. Wish Stare was on it.

Oh, and by the way, I thought D'Angelo's latest album Black Messiah, was a piece of super, piled high SHIT! That album is pure GARBAGE with his mumbling ass.

Also, X=Hugs and O=Kisses to those idiots who thinks it's the other way around.

Update after more listening:

Songs 5-11 make an ok EP. It's on the level of the lesser songs from Come or Chaos & Disorder. In other words, it's not horrible, but it's not something that I'd want to pull out of the collection and hear.

Songs 1-4, somebody told me if you can't say anything nice, then say nothing at all. So my reviews of these 4 is __.

I'm really shocked that I enjoyed this album so much because I've really hated just about everything Prince released from "Emancipation" until "Art Official Age".. I was expecting "Newpower Soul II" based on the tracklist, but I'm honestly enjoying "HitNRun" which caught me offguard.. Here's my review; 1. "Million $ Show" [***] - The first 15 seconds scared the hell out of me.. Thought some joker mislabeled "For You" as a prank, but was relieved to find that Prince was the prankster.. This is a cute, bouncy opener with great production & a sense of humor, feel good arrangement, cool strings.. A nice fluffy throwaway. 2. "Shut This Down" [****] - The screamo "My Name Is Prince" & "Loose" vocal style returns (which I've always loved).. Snatches of loopy trap, EDMfunk-lite, bad ass bass which reeks of awesome, funny outro! 3. "Ain't About 2 Stop" [*****] - Ah here we go, Prince tearing shit up! Industrial spooky Egyptian flourishes with top notch vocals, freaky falsetto, witty lyrics, fucking awesome nasty guitar, retro synth flicks, trashy noise.. Even Rita Ora is great here! A bad ass gem that should be needs a video! The most fiery Prince track since "Gett Off" 4. "Like A Mack" [****] - Thought this'd be garbage because of the title, but I dig it. This is the kind of thing Prince was going for on the "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" album ("Hot Wit U" & "Undisputed") and failed miserably, but he nails it here.. A feisty playful club track that's just fun to listen to.. 5. "This Could B Us" [***] - A remix. Fantastic production, but the recycled vocal track is annoying. P should have just re-recorded the vocal instead. I will say this is 1000x better than those shitty "Breakfast Can Wait" remixes.. Nice new guitar track though. 6. "Fallinlove2nite" [****] - Same as the previously released version, but with Zooey Deschanel's annoying vocals stripped away. Very cool, but should have been on "Art Official Age" where it belongs. Should have been a hit & would have been if P had released it RIGHT after the "New Girl" episode he performed this on, instead of waiting a MONTH when that massive Superbowl audience had already forgotten about it, but whatever. 7. "X's Face" [****] - Same as the version we've had for awhile. Industrial sludge trap hop. Kind reminds me of something from Ween's "The Pod" album.. Hated it at first, but it's grown on me 8. "Hardrocklover" [*****] - Same as the version released on Soundcloud & iTunes. Great music, haunting music, killer guitar, and Prince's greatest studio vocal performance in 20 years.. Fantastic! 9. "Mr. Nelson" [***] - Sounds like this was taken from an aborted "Clouds" maxi-single. I do love this because "Clouds" was amazing, but it doesn't belong on an album. 10. "1000 X's & O's" [***] - Re-recorded version of the vault track we all know, but with less energy. Not as cool without the slick horn arrangements from the original, this is just okay. What happened to the melody? Nice vocal at the end. 11. "June" [*****] - A real gem of a track, the kind Prince used to record in his sleep. Haunting production, personal poetic lyrics like a weird diary entry, fantastic vocals.. Great closer! ------ So there it is. Not the disaster I was expecting. The remixes can go & I still hate the cover, but the rest is great. The production is dreamy, weird, modern, creative, fresh, and Princely.. There's absolutely nothing embarrassing here. Every track has something interesting to offer. And I'm shocked to say that, because I was really expecting this album to be a load of garbage, based on the hideous new songs Prince has been releasing lately ("Stare," "Baltimore," "What If," etc) but this stuff is really entertaining.. There's no instant hits here, but there are few new classics, and a slew of solid album tracks on a new Prince album. The last time THAT happened was 1995's "The Gold Experience," and then came a long line of crap albums & shit singles devoid of creativity, charm, and purpose.. But with last years amazing "Art Official Age" (We'll ignore "Plectrum Electrum") and now this? Things are finally looking up Now.. Is "HitNRun: Phase One" a timeless classic? No. But it's perfect for right now.. Bring on phase two (just leave "Stare" off, thanks!)

So after a few listens, I have decided this album is absolute Pants.

Not just because i'm saying it is, but because it truely is a bad album,

The Lyrics at times lack any real substance.

FALLINLUV2NITE - Still as bad as the first time we heard it.

There is too much in the Mix on the tracks, Josh needs to hold back and learn that more is NOT better.

Mastering is as bad as ever on some.

I'd say maybe 2 tracks I would go back and listen to at any point.

From the Review on Starturbine, they said a number of the tracks werre previewed to people before AOA was released so I suspect its music Warner brothers Didnt want,

He's obviously decided that since the music was sat there giving it to Tidal is a better than it doing nothing.

One thing I noticed from the run up to it is the heavy Focus on Josh and bigging him up for his Production on it.

I think this is maybe Prince's "Gift" to Josh to help get his name out there as a Producer, I have no doubt he'll one day do somethng great int he Studio, He's only 25 at the end of the day but I think maybe work better with a younger artist though.

Even down to the name of the Album "HitnRun" just seems like pure laziness.

I aint mad though, it's not cost me anything to listen to it, I'll just hold out for the next album which I suspect wont be far off.

Have made my way through a few times now and for my money it still sounds like it belongs on Emancipation or somewhere in that era

I just don't hear that it's modern-same old 90's drum sounds (which I can't frickin' stand) and definitely not experimental-parade was experimental(and also amazing)

The other recurrent theme, that seems to be fairly long running now,is simply a lack of actual 'songs'

I think there's no point trying to be modern at 57-just simply write good songs-please!!

Madonna got away with it for a long time but even she now is sounding tired on record.Bruce Springsteen seems to be the only one from that era who is still making good music because he just sticks to his strengths and does not try to compete with people half his age.

lagantest

i was so excited to listen to this album, i really enjoyed AOA. i thought it was patchy but had some solid songs on it. This?

Its pretty bad. Sorry.

Million $ Show is pointless. No Prince.. whats the point?

Shut this down - is alright.

1000 hugs is pondering

June has real potential and is spacey. The highlight for me along with Hardrocklover.

Less said about the rest the better. i may just pick 2-3 tracks out for a playlist thats it. Prince is better when he plays real instruments. the plasic dance stuff never works with him.

My wife likes Rita Ora and asked to hear Aint About To Stop, she asked why are they singing about butt plugs. I told her they are apparantly saying 'if you're not a Rita bot you're a blood clot' but I think butt plug sounds better.

Oh shit. I didn't realize they were saying 'blood clot.'

I now take back anything good I had to say about 'Ain't About To Stop.'

I was thinking you were applying for Bart's job, but then you said you like 20Ten, so, no... wink

Oh, no. KingSausage is most defintely neither the opposite KCOOL nor a pseudoBart. They're far more predictable. KS will reiterate his opinions in many ways, frequently scatological--but until he actually announces his opinion the first time, it's a complete mystery how he's gonna feel about anything. That's why he's entertaining: unpredictable but intense reactions.

Plus dick jokes.
