Does anyone think it's possible Prince will ever see genuine commercial success again?

Prince could release the next Sign O The Times and I don't think it would garner him actual success. It would take a killer hit single in my opinion, but I just can't image what sort of song it would require. A collab with a genuinely talented, hot producer is probably the sort of thing that would need to happen.

I don't necessarily care about him being in the charts again and I assume neither does he. Making quality music for his fans should be his main focus these days instead of chasing any trends and chart success. Is it as simple as 'if the music is good enough, naturally it will be successful'? I don't think it is.
I got two sides... and they're both friends.

What do you mean by again...you don't have to go too far back to see Prince albums in the charts (major releases that is).

Prince has plenty of commercial success, in particular his concert series and live shows are always in demand. Will he chart an urban, pop or rock top single? Depends on how much the label will spend on payolla?

Anything is possible, but at this point I feel people who are craving something huge are asking Prince to recapture their glory days, not so much his.

Perhaps some fans have not figured this out: Prince is a much happier person than he was when he "played the game". I'm sure he'd love it if one of his songs somehow became a big hit, but he's explained too many times why that is not very likely to happen.

Prince doesn't need to, he's successful period, and everyone will always know and remember who he is.

If the question is will Prince ever top the Billboard and iTune music charts and his new songs on heavy rotation on pop radio then the answer is no. It's not a burn, very rarely do veteran artists with Prince's longevity sell units or garner the attention of mainstream media of folks who buy new music on a regular basis ever do in their heyday.

It's not that he can't, anything is possible. Remember commercially from 97-2003 it was one of the lowest periods for any commerical success... Rave was a small exception, lots of promotion, but the result didn't pay off. So for almost 7 years he was completly out of the commercial realm, then what happened in 2004, it was the year of PRINCE. So it is still possible if he really wants it, but you know what that means, apperances, interviews, tv, talk shows, music videos, etc... That's how you achieve commercial success now a days when the artistic level of music is at an all time low, it's VISIBILITY.

he's already replied to that, in a round about way. Take the interview where he said he didnt know he was pushing the envelope, but wanted to get to the top just to see what was there.

Thats not just the envelope hes talking about, that's also commercial success. So he's already done it, now he's chillin, doin what he wants to do.

I think Nouveau is implying that P will have a number one album when he dies, as recently happened in the UK with Cilla Black.

How big of a hit was Sign O' The Times? It's my pick for best album (by anyone) ever created.
-
That said, it wasn't a big hit relatively speaking. Was it in the top ten best selling albums of 1987?
-
Think about that. In the mid 80's, at the peak of his creative powers, just a few years after Purple Rain, Prince releases his best album ever and it sells (in the USA) just a bit more than a million copies.

I've said this alot around here.... think a politically relevant album would most definitely be commercially successful. And of course I believe he has it in him. But it has to be HONEST.

He said he doesnt want to write from anger anymore....and right now the usa is seething in anger on all fronts.

Now is actually the time to use anger for change.

He has too much stupid around him now, too many frivolous time wasters.

He needs to connect to todays pain - lock himself in a room alone .....and write about it. From HIS heart.

True, as they say as you grow older, you also grow wiser, and many things don't have as much meaning to you as they did when you were young.

If he *really* wanted a hit single he could have it anytime he wanted. Just get featured on a Rihanna or Katy Perry or Fetty Wap single (like Paul McCartney did). Any major pop star of today would happily release a collaboration with him. Many of them have said as much.

.

But I don't think he's that desparate for a hit. It still has to be on his terms, not just showing up on someone else's song. Part of me wishes he would do it just once though, so he could finally snag that 20th top ten hit. I like round numbers ha ha.

If released now i'd wager Musicology (the track, NOT the album) would be a decent hit. All he needs is a real killer track like that (and it is a killer track, even if it's derivative as hell) and the backing of someone enough to get those spotify ears on it.

Right now his music is too modern sounding and people get their modern sounds from those he's playing catchup with. Why listen to prince trying to do EDM/dubstep/trap/whatever when you can hear the actual artists doing it?

You backseat modding now?

My point was he'll be genuinely commercial again when he croaks it - For those outside the the UK Cilla Black, a very well-known TV presenter who had a big singing career in the 60s died recently which shot her 'best of' collection to the top of the charts.

Why should we care if Prince does not? As long as music keeps comin, commercial success means nothing to me.

Its really weird. Because it seems like Prince is trying to make 'younger' sounding music (thats the only way I can describe it lol) by working with Josh and all that sort of stuff but at the same time he does hardly anything to promote it. And releasing a new 'experimental' album on Tidal isn't exactly going to appeal to the masses. So it's sort of contradictory:

He makes 'younger' sounding music which would imply he wants to be current-> only to hardly promote it and release it on a streaming system that only a few people really use.

I also heard he was interested in working with Rita Ora and a few other current artists too, so maybe he kind of wants it.

I think if he promoted more it would be possible, but the dude just works too fast and moves on from projects too soon.

If he promotes the album, what does it mean for all you folks that are complaining about no promotion? I ask seriously, and not to puke fun of. To me it just seems a silly thing to concern oneself with, the music remains the same regardless.

Is it validation from peers that you get with promotion? Validation to you personally that it's ok to listen to the music if it is promoted? Is it more money that you hope Prince gets due to the promotion?

I am sincerely curious about the psychology behind this phenomenon.

And that's the attitude most of us need. I think many of Prince's fanbase on the org try to mould personal musical enjoyment according to chart success, like I used to do back in school. It's the "if it's a hit, it must be good" herd mentality. You're all hoodwinking yourselves and closing your minds to a lot of new music. Will Leonard Cohen be No. 1 next week? Won’t you listen to him? Will Beethoven be No. 1 next week? Won't you listen to that music? Will Prince be No. 1 next week? Probably no, but that's no reason not to enjoy the music.

If all you care about is charts and commercial success, and feel bad that prince is not comercially successful anymore, you should not be listening to his music. go listen to weeknd. rock and roll chart success is about youth preferences, so people beyond a certain age find it difficult to make the top even if they are legends and making decent music. The closest parallel is Bollywood, where actors beyond a certain age don't make "heroes" anymore.

Precisely. These days, it's rare for any artist (aside from the typicals: Taylor, Bey, Adele, etc.) to gain "genuine commercial success", using album sales as a gauge. I certainly wouldn't expect that for someone of Prince's status.
