Prince still not playing it safe

Love or hate his new music and the direction he's taking, it's different than anything he's done before

the new album is described as mix of hiphop, house, dubstep and whatnot.

He's still not playing it safe at 30+ years after his debut album which is quite impressive

Let's hear the album first before making any such claims, shall we?

I'm pretty sure that "chasing the popular trends of today with a 25 year old producer" is the definition of playing it safe.

Yes, nothing is riskier than adding elements of hip-hop, house, and dub step to your music. This will be the edgiest album of 1991!

I see what you mean but the way i see it

Prince doing genres he's not known to do is not playing it safe.

Those aren't the genres his fanbase want to hear him do and theres a good chance

the younger generation won't be open to listen to a 57 year old guy doing these genres.

So in his situation i'd say he's not playing a safe..

Hamming current sounds that he has no connection on is not risk taking. It's just chasing trends. Where he used to incorporate and use anew now it's just sad. What would be risk taking would be to do plectrum electrum the way it should've been done and they hinted it would be. I'm not saying he had to return to the Linn of his sounds of the past - maybe just accept his position and not try too hard or so obviously.

It's like when he does 'jazz' it's not really jazz or use the language of that genre - would be the same if he tried to do a trip hop or jungle track. He'd just be mimicking. To call what I've heard so far as brutal, super experimental or whatever hyperbolic adjectives they're using at the moment is misleading an uneducated.

I could be proven wrong. But I'm net expecting to hear something like Aphex Twin's hangable lightbulb or even Goldie's Timeless.

My guess is that Prince has given away more free music in the last 10 years than anyone. (Meaning, posting songs on YouTube or SoundCloud, etc. that you could download for free.)

Does it matter if Prince plays it safe or not, if no one's buying his records?

^ yep. Context is everything here. Recording and doing it that way was different to how everyone else was doing it like he was claiming. Going back to the old analogue / tapes / traditional recording was in that context going against the grain and production that is all levels up to ten. Had he done that it would have been 'challenging' for him at this point in his career.

Instead. Some of the songs were in that vein and others are best forgotten. Playing it safe / challenging the norms isn't simply about doing your own take on what is current and popular. Melt With U and other efforts he's had a dance music - for me just don't do it. When he's used or done hip hop it's in the same family for me, with roots in funk, rnb, soul etc - which runs through his veins. Getting to house, techno and then dubstep is too far removed.

He could do Kanye or Dre kinda sound and be convincing. If he tried to be plastikman it would be horrendous and hackneyed.

And they say "Thank you very much!" don't they, but does anyone ever say "Thank you very much!" to Prince? neutral

I hear you but I think he's played it safe for too long.

ATWIAD and Parade are experimental because he ignored the masses and went off on a tangent. For 20 years he has sat comfortably in the "Pop/Rock/Funk" genres. Rarely trying anything new. With fans hailing "Black Sweat" as "experimental.

There are entire genres of music Prince has ignored. Experimental means trying something new. I would LOVE to hear Prince take on dubstep. It might be utter wank, BUT it might be fucking awesome. We'll never know because Prince obviously looks down on all these different subgenres. He's perfectly entitled to, but wouldn't you rather have a truely experimental album rather than what we all know is coming... Described as "experimental" but only because Josh is producing it. Otherwise it's going to be a pop-funk album heavy on the ballads.

You have thoughts? It's hard to tell from your inane posts.

Prince gives away some good music, but also lots of horseshit. Many songs he should give away because they're not worth anyone paying for. He should pay his fans for taking garbage like MPLSound and Planet Earth. He owes us all at least $100 for listening to that horseshit.

Yes, I have admitted many times that I enjoy AOA and still listen to it. It makes sense that I would dig a nice poo painting. Plus, I'm stuck in a discussion with you, which clearly marks me as a glutton for punishment.

Yep. Welcome to Prince-fam-land. Where for example your neighbor could fling shit in your face and the response will be: "Well, he gave me his record collection for free last week"...

fusk

regarding the TCBU remix, my guess is that prince's input ended with the vocals and guitar he (probably) recorded over a year ago. The rest is alllll Josh.

Hey, remember the live stream where we saw prince literally phone it in?
