How is it possible ... "Sometimes It Snows in April" just came on, and it blew me away, like it usually does, even though I don't listen to it often. The singing is just so open and emotional and honest-sounding, even if it is a character. He's simply out there singing about platonic? love for another man with no fear of homophobic backlash. Then, all these years later, he's a religious conservative with empty party lyrics and braggadocious songs. Ugh.
How can the same guy who records SISIA also record (There'll Never B) Another Like Me?!?? Unreal [Edited 8/23/15 12:47pm] "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

People and things change. I agree April is in my top 3. I can still enjoy There'll never be when i feel like it . There's always something redeemable in every (Prince) song imo. At least he didn't make any of the weeknd songs . For all time I am with you, you are with me.

how that is possible is 40 years of writing songs. aprox 35 albums of his own, another 35 albums worth of material for others, and the passage of a lots and lots of time. at least he's still going. others burned out way before and put out just as much shitty music, if not more.

He was kinda homophobic before then, see 'Bambi'. Although I can kind of forgive him that it was the 70's and stuff like that was more acceptable back in the day. Makes me sad that such a good track has homophobic undertones.

I kind of liked Another Like Me when it was called Disco Jellyfish and had no lyrics. It's just crazy to me how such empty bragging can come from the same person who was so vulnerable and open, at least on his records. But I'm glad he's still going. There are still some gems coming along. Rrrrr, scratch that. Like bluefish said below, that was Chocolate Box. [Edited 8/23/15 20:35pm] "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

I don't se Bambi as homophobic at all. it's just a young, naive, horny guy saying that he can fuck you better than a woman can.

He performed that song in front of Ellen De Generes and her audience in 2004 after the broadcast of the Ellen show ended. That wasn't coincidence, he made a statement. [Edited 8/23/15 16:12pm]

it's bizarre. I can not wrap my head around it either. from Lets get married to what.....compassion. those fake naive lyrics. listen to Controversy,1999 or whatever before 89 and then play 20ten or mplssound. he's a watered down version of himself somehow. he might never wake up.

Lol. That's how not memorable these songs are, eh. Ok, I just went back and listened to both. The beat to Another Like Me is actually decent, and I see where he was going with the lyrics ... but it just failed miserably. CB vocals still remind me in some way of Brittany Spears. The instrumental parts of the last two minutes or so is the best section. [Edited 8/23/15 20:42pm] "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

well, there is an instrumental of "(there'll never b) another like me" which was posted to the had a bria valente track). it clocks in at 2:58. it's not as 'different' to the original track as is Disco Jellyfish compared to Chocolate Box. but there is an instrumental version, so you were not completely wrong there

I knew from the start That I loved you with all my heart But you were untrue. You had another lover and she looked just like you Bambi, can't you understand? Bambi, it's better with a man It's so hard to believe Maybe it's because you're so young Or maybe I'm just too naive Who's to say, maybe you're really having fun Bambi, can't you understand? Bambi, it's better with a man All your lovers - they look just like you But they can only do the things that you do Come on, baby, and take me by the hand I'm gonna show what it's like to be loved by a man Bambi, I know what you need Bambi, maybe you need to bleed Yeah! What going on there is homophobic? He seems a bit ticked his girlfriend got jacked...what's he supposed to do...go hang with Pharrell and get happy? On the reals though. Maybe I'm missing something. I'm in a learning more. What is there going on I. This song that's homophobic? I'd like to think I'm not homophobic and I don't wanna come accross as homophobic. So, if there's something happening here that's homophobic, I wanna find out so as not to repeat it. I'm NOT trying to sound like Trump...believe me. But occasionally, people get outta hand with PC claims. Sometimes I get a vibe that unless u have a cock currently up your ass, swiftly pumping away, and its all accompanied by a smile...ure accused of being homophobic. Shit gets old. What also gets old is that Prince (or any artist) should be one dimensional in their thought process - unlike every other human being.
'How is it possible...'??? It's possible in the same way that YOU sometimes want to hear a party song and other times YOU want to hear a ballad.
Should he always sing heart-tugging, (allegedly socially conscience) ballads?
Are you saying Do Me, Baby; International Lover; Insatiable; Eye Hate U; (and dozens of other songs) aren't great songs because they aren't (allegedly) open and honest?
It's just as likely that Sometimes It Snows In April is the song that's not at all open and honest for him. It could just have been incredibly delivered.

Sometimes It Snows In April, of course, wasn't written just by Prince - Wendy & Lisa co-wrote it. Prince. Bigging up minorities since whenever the hell 'Peach' was recorded. I don't know what point I'm trying to make here.

I'm not sure either...but I wanna say(and not necessarily to you) that 'gay' isn't a reference to the preachers sexuality, if it is, its tongue in cheek(haha...u get it?). Think Chaos and Disorder's, "he's gay, used to mean he's happy,"

I just imagine a lot of lesbians today wouldn't find it all that much of an appealing song. Maybe 'homophobic' was the wrong word. I'd say the worst part of the song is when he says they 'need' a man because it implys that her sex life can't be fully realised without a man.

Ibagree that machismo play around. Appropriately. His skills as a lover/fucker 'seem' innaddequate. Not for sure...he says maybe and what not. The vast majority of men who get leftnfor a woman are going to question their skill set and machismo will play a roll. For those who wanna call that homophobia (not you), reevaluate your notions of homophobia.

This imply to me that he's not certain but has an opinion. The only time I saw the word 'need' was in the last line in an over the top lyrical closer and it rhymed with bleed. Implying that maybe the only thing a man will bring to this woman is bleeding/blood...pain? All at the sacrafice to his machismo. Seems to imply to me that he acknowledges the woman is doing what she wants and what's good for her...but he still gonna address his libido and bruised machismo. He ain't going down without saying summin to his defense.

Yeah, I think that's it. To be fair I hadn't looked into the lyrics that deeply so I probably made a wrong assumption about it. Whenever I listen to the song I normally don't really concenrate on the lyrics really, it's more of a song I listen to for the instrumental.

All the songs you listed are great ... well, except for International Loved imo is a little weak. Of course, all songs don't have to be the same, and party songs are a key ingredient to life. DMSR, Let's Work, and Head are some of my favorites. My point is that Another Like Me is just silly bragging with no heart. It's like the polar opposite of Sometimes It Snows in April.
