This distribution method is stupid though. I'm assuming he gets paid upfront on this deal. Looking at his sales for the last albums, I'm amazed this is happening as it is. Nobody signing up to Tidal just for this. Alright... Maybe a couple of thousand.

Why not put the Purple Rain remaster on Tidal as an exclusive if he wants that service to succeed?

The fact that the album is streamed doesn't make much of a difference to me as a listener, in the sense that I know it'll be ripped in perfect sound quality and shared online for free within 24 hours of its release.

It annoys me more as a discographer, in the sense that as long as we think by traditionnal standards, The Hitnrun cannot be considered a proper canonical album as long as it's not sold with a download option. Even the Judith Hill album has an odd status, since the free download option makes it kind of a promo (and I doubt it'll ever be released in any other form).

But of course this is silly, a geek thing, it's like bootlegs with perfect sound or any other stream that has been rippied in perfect sound quality: I can enjoy The Flesh or the Tidal live show from a few months ago regardless of them being officially released and I'll be able to enjoy The Hitnrun just as much regardless.
