Use of the term "masterpiece" can be such a noose around the neck of anything new or newer. It's also quite easy to pick tracks that were hits, which he hasn't had for over two decades. It keeps us more aligned and objective sounding, even if we weren't all that enamored with them at the time or have long since stopped doing the homework as earnestly as a young heart cramming for finals. Dylan was clearly at his peak in the 60s. Prince in the 80s. And as great as I believe these two were/are, they are both microscopic when held up against the real life that cradled these decades. And since Prince or Dylan are decades beyond being held up as a James Dean cultural-ism, their work, or the work of many older musicians, is to me too easily missed, often peppered with implications that one's taste is hipper than thou, when it's probably at times just weaker at standing on its own (we've all been there). Oh, misunderstand me not, there's plenty of mediocrity, lesser-than moments of great disappointment, obvious examples of studio rehab, and countless missteps that we can all retrace. But there is also AOA, TRC, and many other more-singular moments littered about that just might make us question deeper. So to answer the original question directly, I'd go with "Hardrocklover". I know that sounds like I'm being an asshole, as this was his latest song. But I'm deadly serious. It absolutely puts the pretty-fair efforts of "Plectrumelectrum" in their place. It's Prince picking up his guitar in a quite indefinable way that sets beds on fire, rips holes in dated expectations, and causes formerly caged flocks to rush the studio, rolling up sleeves so that they can prove each bump. If I were still cynical (those days are hopefully gone) I'd say this is Prince digging in the vault for a 29-year-old photograph. No way can a human being do this at 57. Now excuse me while the crowd claps my ass down a hall with absolutely no trace of an echo anticipating an elder statesman waxing poetic about arthritis on the road. The needle picks it up. This is already deep enough. Spectacular. | |

For me, the last truly masterful track I've been exposed to is "Adonis & Bathsheba". Sure, there have been others since. But my goodness, that fucking song MOVES ME!! It's a constant reminder that no matter what you may think of his perceived faded skill set or songwriting abilities, the man is a GENIUS through and through. And that cut, for me anyway, is an absolute mic dropper... | |
