Whatever happened to Purple Rain 30th Anniversary

I read somewhere that Prince was going to put out a Special Edition 30th Anniversary Purple Rain Album, which was to include some unreleased singles that were dropped from the original album. I have enjoyed Prince's catalog throughout the 30 years, but I get so tired of his empty promises.

It's a pity it was such a limited edition nod

Hadn't I preordered, I would have missed it like so many fans did.

Apparently, Prince will only give Warners the 30th Anniversary discs if they fund his new movie. It's a sequel to Graffiti Bridge called 'I Never Promised You A Roadhouse Garden'.

That doesn't make sense. If he was all about the money, it would have been released on CD/LP plus a limited edition purple vinyl LP plus a bluray/dvd of the film a bluray/dvd of the Syracuse concert...

It was too good to be true, of course Prince would never release something like this for his fans who have supported him over the years smile

It was coming & it was going to be amazing, until Larry Graham reminded Prince that he doesn't believe in anniversaries.

And cannot cut the deals that would help him the best ways.

That's it.

Expect nothing from Prince and you'll never be disappointed...

He's such a control freak, and plays games to the point where you're best to give up on him.

Not releasing PR 30 but releasing "What If"is the sign of a guy whose lost the plot completely.

TBH I wasn't really expecting anything new. Like everyone else, I have PR "unofficial recordings" that I rarely listen to. And I have the PR 2004 anniversary double DVD pack that I haven't watched in years.... A 30th anniversary gift would have been nice, but I probably would have listened to it once or twice and put it away. It probably would have had everything that we own on it already... I would be more excited for a "Parade" box set since 2016 is right around the corner.

it's not just about the PR remaster though,

it's about his albums from DM to Lovesexy(1980-88)

remastered, expanded with live shows and extras.

like the above poster said, bring on the

PARADE remaster.just as exciting.

It's not gonna happen.Isn't Prince already planning another album of new music? That's where his focus seems to be confused "Nostalgia" is a bad word,in his view.

If there's no unreleased, as in actually unheard, studio recordings of outtakes then I think I could live without a Purple Rain remaster. I know the CD quality is shall we say less than stellar, but if it came down to it, I'd rather a remastered Dirty Mind.

Purple Rain has been remastered, along with Controversy, Dirty Mind and 1999 back in 2011... All for 180g VINYL.

^ I think Purple Rain re-release on vinyl was in 2009 or 2010:

1 or 2 year before the others..

This NEEDS to happen. I have Michael Jackson's "Bad" CD and it sounds good, similar to "Purple Rain." Recently, I downloaded the re-mastered 2012 version... dear God, it kicked my ass. Gave me a whole new appreciation for the album. Same for George Michael's discs. And while some of Prince's CDs still sound good, "Sign o' the Times" honestly sounds dreadful to me. It needs remastering.

And why exactly wouldn't he? I guess you don't realize that 1) George Michael and Michael Jackson are 2 different entertainers, not one person and 2) Prince has paid both of them props in the past.

I would ask what entertainers YOU think it's okay to be fans of and still have Prince's approval, but something tells me Prince is the only entertainer you listen to anyway. wink

He isn't, but it seems like folks here just can't shut up about Jackson. You see his name pop up again and again on this and the non-Prince forum. I was getting a little tired of having to read about Jackson all the time on a Prince fan site and chose a not so subtle way to say it. That's all.

What's that? Surely Prince would never hype something with the intent to deceive his fans?
